Motorola, Toshiba, HTC and other tech giants are using this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to debut their latest and greatest products. In what should prove a surprise to exactly nobody, many of those products are smartphones and tablets. While every company is offering something different with regard to software and hardware, some trends are definitely emerging: Many of the upcoming tablets, including the Motorola Xoom and Toshiba’s tablet, embrace Android 3.0. With regard to smartphones, manufacturers definitely have their eye on 4G networks.
If last year’s CES was all about e-readers for many companies, this one is all about tablets. Companies such as Research In Motion (with its PlayBook) hope to make a dent in the increasingly crowded space. Other tech stalwarts, though, seem more concerned with offering the latest devices in entirely different product lines, including connected TVs and in-car IT systems. Dell and T-Mobile have joined forces to produce the 7-inch Streak 7 tablet, specifically designed for T-Mobiles 4G network. Unveiled at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the tablet joins other Android-based devices flooding the market. The Streak 7 will hit store shelves “in coming weeks,” according to T-Mobile and Dell, although neither company is yet offering a firm price-point.
Adding two inches to the screen-size of the original 5-inch Dell Streak but keeping many of the same hardware and software notes, the Streak 7 is a device whose form-factor seems tailored to compete with other 7-inch Android-based tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. That being said, though, a handful of rival tablets being unveiled at CES run Android 3.0, which is supposedly optimized for tablets. Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Presenter accessory allows users to display a PowerPoint presentation on a projector or monitor directly from a BlackBerry smartphone, as opposed to relying on a laptop. Amazon announced that it would introduce a new version of its large-screen e-reader, the Kindle DX, that allows users to download e-books and other content in over 100 countries. Although Amazon has dropped the price of its original Kindle in recent months in response to competitive pressure from Barnes Nobles Nook device, the online retailer is keeping the Kindle DX at its original price point of $489, suggesting it views the larger-screen e-reader market as somewhat less competitive. Samsung announces four new netbooks ahead of this week’s Consumer Electronics Show. Equipped with the Intel Atom N450 processor, these devices feature long battery life, and one model has been specially ruggedized to survive falls and immersion in water for a limited time.
