Boole’s breakthrough was the insight that logic, which had previously been considered a branch of philosophy, was actually closer to mathematics. All you needed to do was express logical problems in a symbolic format, and they could be [...]

Disco Biscuits: Late Summer Tour
TOUR STARTS AUGUST 25 IN DEWEY BEACH, DELAWARE
![]() The Disco Biscuits |
From DiscoBiscuits.com:
We just finished plotting our late August/September run that will take us to some familiar places as well as some
new ones. Presales for most of our newly-announced headline dates are live NOW at BiscoTix! We start in the
Northeast with a beach party in Dewey Beach. We hope to recreate the magic that we created in South Carolina
earlier this month. Then we head down to North Carolina with a show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. Both these
shows will be with our friend MiM0SA who will be joining us at many other stops along the way. If you’re not
familiar, he is incredible young dubstep producer and DJ that you’ll have to come and see. After making our debut
appearance at the Blackwater Music Festival in Florida on August 27, we hit Atlanta for what promises to be an
amazing weekend of music with our close friends STS9. On Saturday night August 28, we co-headline at the
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre with STS9 and on Sunday August 29, we have our own headlining show at the
Tabernacle. From Atlanta, we head up north making stops in Lexington, KY and Cleveland with our new up and
coming friends in Papadosio. Come early and check them out.
Labor Day weekend sees our return to Chicago to take part in the North Coast Music Festival, where we’ll be joined
by some great artists and friends including Pretty Lights, Damian Marley and NAS, the Chemical Brothers and
Umphrey’s McGee. On Friday night, September 3, we will play our own very special late-night show at the Congress
Theatre immediately after the Festival closes at 10 PM. This is our first return to the Congress since January 2009
when we tore the roof off the sucka with RJD2 and Prefuse 73. Ticketing details for this show will be announced
shortly. On Saturday of Labor Day weekend we will make a quick jolt down to Austin for the Nocturnal Festival:
Texas where we will perform with Pretty Lights, Girl Talk, and Armin Van Buuren. We will then fly back up to Chicago
to perform our headlining festival slot at the North Coast Festival on September 5. From Chicago we will head east
for a night in State College, PA on Tuesday, September 7 and a two-night throwdown at the Town Ballroom in
Buffalo on September 8-9. This will all be followed by an amazing weekend in Holyoke, MA at Mountain Park and
Boston at the Bank of America Pavillion, September 10-11. We will be joined at these shows by some very special
guests to be announced shortly!”

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY COME TOGETHER FOR INTERNATIONAL TOUR
THE DUO RELEASE LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET ON MAY 11
Jackson Browne |
Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.
The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.
Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).
Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.
On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973′s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983′s acclaimed El Rayo-X.
Prior to 2010′s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain-in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino” – featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.
In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”

Living Colour: New Album & Tour
New Album The Chair In The Doorway Set For Release September 15
![]() |
Living Colour has announced North American tour dates in support of the new album The Chair In The Doorway. The 28-date run will be bookended by performances at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, as they appear August 11 opening for The Roots, at their weekly Tuesday night jam session, and then again on October 30 for their own headline performance.
The Chair In The Doorway, set for release September 15, was recorded at Sono Studios just outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. Renowned producer Count (Galactic, Lyrics Born, No Doubt) was onboard to helm the sessions, while Ron St. Germain (U2, Mos Def, Muse) mixed the album. The 11-track collection is Living Colour’s most personal collection of songs yet with razor sharp lyrical observations and kinetic jams that seamlessly weave elements of metal, funk and soul. Vernon Reid described the album as, “an unintentional concept record about life and how we are all in this thing together.”

BBC walks with dinosaurs on climate
The BBC’s output treats the findings of thousands of scientists on climate change as no more than ‘views’ or ‘opinion’
Years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, I worked for the BBC’s natural history unit as a radio producer. It was a great job, and my colleagues were stimulating and fun. I was allowed to make investigative environmental programmes, and we exposed some shocking scandals. We recorded the head of customs in Abidjan offering to sell us smuggled chimpanzees, for example, and we found that a bulk carrier which crashed off the coast of Cork, polluting rare habitats, appeared to have been deliberately scuppered.
After Mrs Thatcher launched her coup against the BBC, its executives quickly lost their appetite for investigative programmes, and my boss explained that we no longer had the support we needed to continue. Since then the natural history unit has continued to broadcast beautiful, thrilling programmes about the world’s wildlife. Occasionally it makes an environmental programme. But by and large it presents the biosphere as if it inhabits a planet yet to be discovered by human beings (except of course the cameramen you see struggling with the elements in the “how we made it” segments).
The most extreme example was the three-part series on the Congo made for the BBC by Scorer Associates. At the height of a devastating civil war which had caused the deaths of some 4 million people, the series reported that “the Congo may once have been known as the ‘heart of darkness’ – today it seems more like a bright, beautiful wilderness.” In two and a half hours of programmes the killings were not mentioned.
Lovely as the unit’s output remains, I believe that it creates a misleading impression of the world, which can have grave political consequences. It encourages people to believe that all is well with the world’s ecosystems; often it produces the only footage viewers see from far-flung parts of the world. I am not arguing that the political or environmental context should dominate the unit’s output, only that it should be acknowledged and explained, however briefly. Is this too much to ask?
Yes, apparently. For the past few years an environmental campaigner called Peter Hack has been writing to the BBC asking about one of these gaps. As far as he can discover, over the past 17 years (since the 1992 Rio earth summit in other words) of BBC films about the ecosystems of east Africa, there has not been a single mention of climate change. Yet these places have been hit harder than almost anywhere else by changes in weather patterns. Kenya, for example, has suffered a series of extreme droughts, whose frequency appears to be unprecedented. These have direct and immediate impacts on the region’s wildlife. But watching Big Cat Diary or any of the other films the unit has made in the Serengeti, Maasai Mara and other great parks and reserves, you wouldn’t have the faintest idea that anything had changed.
Peter Hack has just shown me the latest letter he’s received from Gerald McCusker at BBC Information. McCusker explains the gap thus:
“It’s not always possible or practical to reflect all the different opinions on a subject within individual programmes and we feel that over a reasonable period our coverage will reflect a diverse range of views and opinions with regard to this issue.”
So it turns out that the entire science of climate change, the work of thousands of researchers, the tens of thousands of papers published in scientific journals, the indisputable facts about changes in temperature, precipitation and wildlife populations in east Africa is no more than a “view” or “opinion”. Nice to know where you stand, isn’t it?
