AI urges EU to pressure Croatia over war crimes

Amnesty International urged European Union officials to insist that Croatian authorities prosecute all war crimes committed during the 1990s. The EU was also urged to consider AI’s concerns when deciding whether to close the chapter on the judiciary and fundamental rights in Croatia’s accession talks, Program Director Nicola Duckworth said in Brussels on Tuesday.

“Croatia, Serbia guarantors of Bosnia’s stability”

Croatian President Ivo Josipović Serbia has stated that Croatia are firmly committed to the future in the European Union. Thus they are guarantors of safety and stability as regards Bosnia-Herzegovina, he said, according to media reports.

Croatia submits updated suspect list

Serbian Justice Minister Snežana Malović says that Croatia has sent an updated list of 1,549 persons who have been charged and convicted in Croatia.

“Compared to the list presented in July last year, this one contains 15 persons more,” she told Tanjug.

Serbia, Croatia in joint science projects

The joint Serbian and Croatian commission for scientific and technological cooperation met on Friday in Zagreb and prepared a list of 32 science projects.

Serbian Assistant Science and Technological Development Minister Viktor Nedović told Tanjug that 73 applications had been received and 32 were selected, mainly in the field of biotechnology.

Croatia receives list of suspects

The Croatian Justice Ministry confirmed that it received from Serbia the list of 33 of its citizens against whom war crimes probes were or are being conducted. They added that investigations had been suspended for 26 of the persons from the list, whereas for the remaining seven the investigation is still ongoing.

Serbia wants indicted Croat extradited

Serbia has asked Bosnia to extradite Croatian national Tihomir Purda, wanted on a war crimes indictment. Serbian Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekarić said this office “with regret accepted the decision” of Croatia not to request Purda’s extradition.

Slovenia in protest note to Croatia

Slovenia has sent a protest note to Croatia protesting what it sees as prejudging of the sea border between the two countries.
The Croatian national television reported that, according to Croatia’s rulebook, the border is established along the middle of the Bay of Piran, adding, however, that this will only be so until the completion of the demarcation between the two countries.

Pro-Ustasha singer received party funds

Croatian musician Marko Perković aka Thompson was one of the recipients of the HDZ party “black funds”.
According to reports, Perković was given EUR 500,000 and asked to, in return, refuse to perform in favor of any party during the 2007 election campaign in Croatia.

Josipović “not deterred by threats”

Croat President Ivo Josipović has said that he will not be deterred from doing his job by the extremists who had sent a bomb to the Croatian embassy in Berlin. Croatia will not abandon its European path and all officials will continue to do their jobs regardless of threats, he said.

Cases to be prosecuted after Hague

Hague Tribunal Judge Fausto Pocar said in Zagreb, Croatia, on Monday that the court was nearing the final phase of its work. He noted that after it had shut down, the prosecution of war crimes would be continued by relevant courts in the countries of the region.

“Croatia should take stand on war crimes suspect”

Serbia’s Justice Minister Snežana Malović said late Friday that she expected Croatia to take a stand on the case of Tihomir Purda.

Purda is, along with two others, suspected of war crimes against Serbs in Borovo Naselje near Vukovar, eastern Croatia.

“Convicted Serbs should request retrials”

Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević has called upon the Serbs from Croatia convicted of war crimes to request retrials.

The agreement on cooperation with the Croatian judiciary also allows retrials in Serbia.

Justice minister on extradition of war crimes suspect

If Croatia does not request extradition of Tihomir Purda in the next ten days Serbia will, Serbian Justice Minister Snežana Malović told B92.

She said that documentation on Purda, who is suspected of war crimes against the Serbs in Vukovar, would be submitted to the Croatian judiciary today or tomorrow.

Tadić, Kosor discuss war crimes case

Serbian President Boris Tadić spoke with Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor about the case of Tihomir Purda, the Serbian president’s cabinet has announced. Tadić underlined during the discussion that “this and similar cases needed to be considered by the appropriate ministries and prosecutions in both Serbia and Croatia, respecting the legal systems of both countries.”

Prosecution dismisses Croatia claims

The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office dismissed in a statement on Monday the claims about the country’s alleged list of 340 Croats wanted for war crimes. The alleged list contained the names of Croatian citizens who committed in the city of Vukovar, eastern Croatia, during the 1990s.

“After Croatia, EU should admit others”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the country intended to finalize European Union’s (EU) pre-accession talks with Croatia. He added that other countries of the region should also be admitted to the bloc in order that the work on the unification of the European continent could be completed, Croatian electronic media reported on Thursday.

Romania is threatening to create problems for Croatia’s EU accession bid, euobserver.com reports. This comes in a diplomatic counter-attack against delays to its own entry into the EU’s border-free Schengen zone, writes the online publication.

Croatia lifts visas for Albanians

The Croatian government has decided to abolish visas for the citizens of Albania as of next year, ATA news agency reported.

As of January 1, 2011, the citizens of Albania will no longer require visas when crossing Croatian borders or staying in the country up to 90 days.

“Genocide suit should not sour relations”

Croatian President Ivo Josipović says there is no reason for Croatia’s response to Serbia’s genocide countersuit to jeopardize the good relations. Commenting on Croatia’s response at the International Court of Justice on Dec. 20, Josipović told reporters in Zagreb that the response is “part of the normal process that is unfolding,” and that “nothing really spectacular has happened.”

Ex-Croat PM opposes extradition

Former Croatian PM Ivo Sanader stated before an Austrian judge on Monday that he does not wish to be extradited to Croatia. He is wanted in his country on corruption charges.
