Phoenix: Select N. American Dates

PHOENIX ANNOUNCES SELECT NORTH AMERICA SHOWS IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY

Phoenix

Following a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Alternative Album, and a series of incredible holiday radio shows in December, Phoenix will be returning to North America this month for their first shows of 2010. The dates, which start in Vancouver as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad series, sees the band hitting select cities along the West Coast, as well as playing shows in Mexico for the first time.

2009 was a breakthrough year for the French band, with music lovers across the country falling for the infectious melodies and driving rhythms of their career-defining fifth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Loyaute/Glassnote). Phoenix and their songs – including dynamite singles “1901″ and “Lisztomania” – were everywhere in 2009, and the year-end lists have been teeming with praise for the album, landing them in the Top Ten on lists by Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, Myspace (who named them Artist of the Year), Spin, Pitchfork, JamBase and many more.

Railroad Earth: NYE, Hitting Studio Bassist Grubb’s Last Shows

RAILROAD EARTH ANNOUNCE NEW YEAR’S PLANS, NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS

Railroad Earth

After a largely successful fall tour, Railroad Earth is wrapping up a momentous 2009 with performances on both coasts before heading to the studio for their forthcoming album. The six-piece Americana outfit is scheduled for a short east coast run before heading to San Francisco’s Fillmore on December 27 and 28, and Portland, OR’s Crystal Ballroom December 30 and 31 for a New Year’s Eve blow out.

The New Year’s performance will mark the final show with long-time bass player and friend, Johnny Grubb, who recently resigned from the project. With numerous sell-out performances around the country, the final performances with Grubb are not to be missed. The band will be taking the first part of 2010 to focus on the creation and release of their sixth album before hitting the road again in the summer.

Railroad Earth’s most successful year to date, 2009 saw the band grace stages at some of the country’s most prestigious festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury, and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. In their relatively short tenure, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums and amassed an impressive national following with sold-out shows from coast-to-coast.

Mixing an unlikely blend of instruments to make up their well-traveled sound, the project features Todd Sheaffer (lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (violin, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Grubb (upright bass).

Pretty Lights | 10.18 | Oregon

Words by: Adam Cremeans | Images by: Colin McLaughlin/melophobe

Pretty Lights :: 10.18.09 :: Crystal Ballroom :: Portland, OR

Derek Vincent Smith – Pretty Lights :: 10.18 :: Oregon

By now it’s hard to have not at least heard of the phenomenon known as Pretty Lights. The group has been on a tear since May, playing late night sets at Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Forecastle, and High Sierra festivals. The momentum has carried over into a fall tour that has sold out venues from Colorado to the Bay Area and will be swooping through the Midwest and East Coast in the next few weeks. The group is demanding attention right now and with a new album, Passing By Behind Your Eyes (available for FREE here) and their first headlining tour, the attention is well worth the hype.

The West Coast leg of the tour wrapped up on a Sunday night in Portland, Oregon at the Crystal Ballroom, a venue that holds a special place in the heart of the city’s live music scene. The renovated ballroom is equipped with an original dance floor that is spring-loaded and has the tendency to come to life with the beat and stomp of an energetic crowd. As the Pretty Lights logo flashed to life on the spectacular LED backdrop the duo, Derek Vincent-Smith (producer) and Cory Eberhard (drummer), took the stage to an anxious crowd. New track “Sunday School” opened the set with its heavy beat and words of wisdom from the late Notorious B.I.G., and the party had officially commenced. The allure of Pretty Lights is the sense of beauty and elegance which coexists with a dirty, underground element. The sound is refreshing and unique to the genre like a girl who matches combat boots with a cocktail dress.

The set continued on into the remaining hours of a beautiful autumn Portland night as the duo weaved their way through staple tracks like “Finally Moving” and “Hot Like Sauce.” Smith was also able to find appropriate places for the new material like “If I Could Feel Again” and “City of One,” a masterpiece that stands out as one of the more layered, produced tracks in the Pretty Lights catalog. A great mix-up of Jay-Z’s “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)” was worked into the set, and the funk sound of “Let Them Know It’s Time To Go” resulted in an explosion of energy that caused the floor to bounce with sweaty grandeur.

Cory Eberhard – Pretty Lights :: 10.18 :: Oregon

The night became a series of buildups and releases, each one more energetic than the last. There is a level of improvisation with Pretty Lights that allows Smith and Eberhard to mutually feed off one another while also bringing in the crowd’s energy. This added element of detail and creativity is what has allowed the project to gain steam as more and more people come out to see what their music is about, namely a simple, pure, and very real experience that pushes the boundaries of a multitude of genres.

A short technical glitch forced the band offstage for a brief moment, though they returned announcing that they would scrap the encore and instead just play straight through up to the curfew. “More Important Than Michael Jordan” opened the energy up again and worked the crowd back into movement. Nearly 30 minutes later as the opening notes of crowd favorite “Paper Planes/Rump Shaker Remix” rang out, the unified audience was sent bobbing up and down for one last throw down on the overly worked dance floor.

When the house lights came up the reality of Monday morning obligations were momentarily put on hold as each of us took time to catch a breath, gather our thoughts, and smile as we reflected on the experience we’d just shared. One word: Refreshed.

For more on Pretty Lights check out JamBase’s coverage on the beginnings of the phenomena here, and you can download all of the group’s albums here.

This time around they got to share the stage with some of their heroes, including Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, and Gillian Welch during a group sing-along.

Railroad Earth Tour

Railroad Earth Takes the Both Coasts on Fall/Winter Tour

Railroad Earth

It’s no surprise that the band Railroad Earth took their name from Jack Kerouac’s flowing prose-poem, “October in the Railroad Earth.” Interspersed with memories of the past and the present, the story weaves a complex tapestry of impressions and reflections, all underlining the American history of the workingman. Much like Kerouac, Railroad Earth’s music captures the grit and soul of rural and urban America and translates it into something deeper than just music.

The six-piece ensemble crafts each song artfully, like a storyline in a novel about travel, wonderment, tragedy, and heartbreak. With the unusually soulful and deep writing and vocal delivery of principal songwriter, Todd Sheaffer, combined with instrumentation so colorful you might find them on the Appalachian Trail, Railroad Earth is bringing their slice of American culture on a hefty fall/winter tour spanning both coasts and every major market in between.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country. But unlike the speed trains in Kerouac’s novels, this Railroad Earth is in no hurry “to get there fast.”

Brett Dennen & Grace Potter Tour

BRETT DENNEN ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR WITH GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS

Brett Dennen

Brett Dennen, whose narrative-rich lyrics and world-infused melodies have earned comparisons to Bob Marley and Paul Simon, has announced a Fall Tour with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. He will hit the Austin City Limits Festival in October, then perform at both The Greek and The Hollywood Bowl with Jason Mraz in October before setting out with Potter in November (full dates listed below). Registered fans on BrettDennen.net can purchase presale tickets on Thursday, September 10. Tickets go on sale to the general public for all shows starting Friday morning, September 11.

Already one of the fastest growing touring artists on the road, Brett recently told Billboard Magazine, “I’m really excited about this tour because I think it’s going to be a little more rocking than tours I’ve done in the past.” He adds, “Grace really knows how to rock it.”

Dennen’s current single, “Heaven” featuring Natalie Merchant debuted on iTunes last week and is already being adopted early and fast by AAA radio. The single’s success is a further step in Dennen’s rising profile after a summer of touring some of the biggest festivals like Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Summer Fest, Mountain Jam, Outside Lands Festival and Bumbershoot, as well as joining O.A.R. at venues like Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden.

Builders and the Butchers Tour

The Builders And The Butchers Announce U.S. Tour

Sophomore LP Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well Out Now

The Builders and the Butchers

The Builders and the Butchers don’t pay homage to old America, they channel it. All of the basic instruments are there – acoustic bass, drum, guitar, banjo and mandolin – mixing gospel, blues, bluegrass and desperate story-songs together with an adherence to melody and rhythm.

The timeless sound of their songs harkens back to a time long passed in music, but reflecting the dark times of the present. Their self-titled debut was released in 2007 and showcases the band’s early raw sound. Their latest release titled Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well (listen below) is a much more complete work showcasing the bands full potential. On Salvation, the Builders worked with producer Chris Funk from The Decemberists who brought with him a throng of expertise, patience, instruments and some of the best musicians in Portland. Salvation combines the immediacy of the Builders early work with more a developed songwriting, each song with its own personality and story to tell. In the vein of the Southern Gothic tales lead singer Ryan Sollee weaves stories of struggle with the usual cast of characters God, the Devil, soldiers, branches, wind, rain and hell fire.

The story of Salvation is a Deep Dark Well is that there’s joy and celebration through the darkness, there’s light in the hardest of times and when you reach the bottom salvation may light your way.

The Low Anthem Tour Dates

LOW ANTHEM CONTINUE WORLD TOUR WITH WEST COAST DEBUT, DATES WITH BLIND PILOT

The Low Anthem

It’s been a banner year for The Low Anthem. In addition to being JamBase’s New Favorite Artist this month, the Rhode Island trio spent the greater part of the year touring with acts such as Elvis Perkins In Dearland, Joe Pug, Ray LaMontagne, Josh Ritter, and Langhorne Slim in support of their highly praised Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, the band is gearing up for yet another stretch on the road, this time with the Portland group Blind Pilot. This run of 21 club and theater dates begins October 15 and continues through November 12 and includes the band’s West coast debut. Additionally, The Low Anthem will return to NYC for a performance at the Bell House at the end of August and travel to Europe for a month-long tour in September, where they’ve already played to much enthusiasm at Glastonbury, sold out a show at Union Chapel in London, and received stellar reviews in Uncut, Q, Mojo, NME, The Guardian, and The Independent.

The very special Avon Cinema in Providence, RI is hosting the first October U.S. tour date. The Cinema is a beautiful old movie theatre, the perfect setting for the band’s anticipated homecoming show and largest performance in Providence to date. The band will also be playing a free show on Block Island, where they recorded Charlie Darwin.

The Low Anthem’s most recent tour has taken them through a number of prestigious festivals, including Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, and the recent 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival, where they had humble beginnings working as recycling crew. This time around they got to share the stage with some of their heroes, including Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, and Gilian Welch during a group sing-along.

THE LOW ANTHEM PRESS:

“Only a band since 2006, the depth of songwriting and ability to cross the dusty Americana landscape from such burdened acoustic folk songs like “To Ohio” to country barnburners, delicate three-part harmonies dripping with reverb, a Tom Waits cover, and soul-saving gospel without loosing continuity makes The Low Anthem worthy of all the hype they are sure to receive…” – JamBase

“Stately… Lyrics contemplating faith, loss, destruction and self-destruction.” – New York Times

“One of the breakthrough albums of 2009… A highly eventful journey into American songcraft, variously echoing Dylan, Springsteen, The Band, and Tom Waits.” – MOJO

“Really beautiful… The great music, it’s not what you play; it’s what you don’t play.” – Billy Bragg (PROJO)

Lotus Pay What You Want Tour

LOTUS ANNOUNCE HUGE FALL TOUR, INCLUDING A “PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT” WESTERN STATE RUN

THE BAND RELEASES A PAIR OF EPs ON OCTOBER 6: FEATHER ON WOOD AND OIL ON GLASS

Lotus

Lotus is about to break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior – they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The “Pay-What-You-Want-Tour” featuring Lotus is an eight-night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band’s two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.

The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus’ larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver’s Fillmore, NYC’s Terminal 5, Baltimore’s Sonar, Chicago’s Vic Theatre, and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science ft Adam Deitch, The Egg (from London, U.K.), Big in Japan, and Big Gigantic. Don’t miss a few special small shows: here’s the scoop – two shows at NYC’s Mercury Lounge are being bundled with the T-5 ticket, and the same offer is available for the Denver shows (to get into Quixote’s, you must buy the Fillmore ticket).

Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the three New York City shows, two Denver shows, both Boston shows and a few other shows to be determined. The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus’ 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn’t find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn’t been finished by deadlines or they weren’t coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding tempos.
