Attitudes to business: Milton Friedman goes on tour

A survey of attitudes to business turns up some intriguing national differences

PUBLIC-RELATIONS folk are not noted for burning the midnight oil over the works of great economists. But Edelman, an American firm, has come up with a clever idea. It asked members of the “informed public”—broadly, people with university degrees who are in the top quarter of wage-earners in their particular age groups and countries—what they think of Milton Friedman’s famous assertion that “the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits.”

The issue of whether businesses should promote corporate social responsibility (CSR) is hotly debated. Many of the world’s biggest companies (including BP and the now defunct Enron) have embraced the notion. So have politicians. Britain’s 2006 Companies Act requires businesses to report on their CSR records. The United Nations has a “global compact” for CSR. But the world’s Friedmanites have waged a relentless guerrilla war against the idea, denouncing it as a farrago of value-destroying nonsense. …

Wilmar said to seek $1.5b for CSR sugar buyout: Update

Wilmar International, the world’s largest palm oil trader, approached banks for about $1.1 billion ($1.5 billion)of loans to buy CSR Ltd.’s Australian sugar unit, according to two people familiar with the matter.
 
The mixed-maturity term facility, in both Australian and U.S. dollars, will pay an all-in fee averaging about 100 basis points more than the London interbank offered rate, the people said, asking not to be identified as the talks are private.

Wilmar +2.3%; Diversifying via Sucrogen buy, says UBS

Wilmar (F34.SG) remains best performer among Singapore blue chips, +2.3% at 4-session high of $5.88, on prospect of long-term revenue boost as plantation group ventures into sugar business with A$1.75 billion ($2.1 billion) purchase of CSR’s (CSR.AU) Sucrogen, according to Dow Jones.

Wilmar trumps Bright Food with Australia CSR sugar deal: Update

Singapore’s Wilmar International has acquired Sydney-based CSR’s sugar business for US$1.47 billion ($2.04 billion) in a surprise deal that trumps China’s Bright Food Group and gives it control of more than half of Australia’s raw sugar output. 

CSR (CSR.AX), the world’s fifth-largest sugar-refiner, said on Monday Wilmar (WLIL.SI) had agreed to buy its sugar arm, Sucrogen, ending a year-long effort to either spin-off or sell the asset and pushing its share price up as much as 5% in a broadly weak market.

Wilmar trumps Bright Food with CSR deal

Singapore’s Wilmar International (WLIL.SI) on Monday struck a surprise deal to buy Australian conglomerate CSR Ltd’s sugar business for A$1.75 billion (US$2.1 billion), trumping China’s Bright Food Group.

Shares in CSR (CSR.AX), the world’s fifth-largest sugar-refiner, climbed more than 4% after CSR announced it had agreed to sell the sugar arm to Wilmar, the world’s largest listed palm oil producer.

Corporate social responsibility could be law: Khurshid

The government will look at all options, including legislation, to make more companies adopt corporate social responsibility (CSR), Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Wednesday.
