Google Android, HTC, Samsung, LG: The Best of CTIA 2010

CTIA Wireless 2010 saw major companies rolling out a number of smartphones and mobile services, aiming to either consolidate or expand their market share in an ever-more-competitive arena. Among the higher-profile announcements: Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G, a 4G-capable smartphone that the company hopes will become a must-have device for its speed and multimedia capabilities, and Samsung’s Galaxy S, with a screen designed to take advantage of not only video and image, but also e-texts. Google Android seemed to run on many of the newer devices being displayed, while Microsoft showed off a prototype of its Windows Phone 7 Series OS. With the smartphone market generally expected to keep expanding, these devices have the potential to drastically affect their companies’ revenues going forward and allow them to compete for both consumer and business dollars.

Android 2.1 Delayed on the Motorola Droid, No Nexus One on Verizon

Motorola’s move to push Android 2.1 out to its popular Motorola Droid smartphones has been delayed by more than a week, prompting an angry backlash from users expecting new feaures. The company said via its Facebook Page March 25 the rollout is taking longer than expected. Meanwhile, the Google Nexus One, rumored to roll out from Verizon Wireless at the CTIA Wireless 2010 show March 23, is still not on Verizon. A spokesperson said it’s not happening…yet.

Yahoo Sketch-a-Search Offers iPhone Search Alternative

Yahoo at CTIA Wireless debuts two search applications for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. The Sketch-a-Search app lets users search for information without typing in keywords. Instead, users can search by drawing a boundary on the iPhone’s map to find local restaurants within that area. The Yahoo Search for iPhone app is a standard search app for the popular smartphone. Samsung Reveals Galaxy S Google Android Phone

Samsung unveils a new Google Android smartphone, the Galaxy S, at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas. Running on Android 2.1 and powered by a 1GHz processor, the smartphone features Super AMOLED, which the company says makes its 4-inch screen 20 percent brighter with 20 percent more battery life. Samsung describes the Galaxy S as a multimedia device capable of delivering movies and ebooks, and is partnering with a number of companies, including Skiff and Paramount Pictures, to deliver content.

ATandT CEO Stephenson Talks WorkBench for iPhone

AT T CEO and president Randall Stephenson opened the CTIA Wireless 2010 conference with a keynote speech in which he insisted that the United States led the world in its wireless innovation, and detailed a native iPhone application for enterprise users. The CTIA Wireless 2010 convention in Las Vegas, due to run from March 23-25, will be the chance for Microsoft, AT T, Sprint, Verizon, Motorola, Opera, Palm, Skype, and a variety of other mobile-related companies to show off their latest devices, applications and roadmaps for 2010 and beyond.
