Here, Knowledge Center mobile and wireless analyst J. Gerry Purdy shares his major insights from the show, including the ShowStoppers press and analyst event he attended and the Wireless Innovators dinner he hosted. – CTIA is the trade and lobby organization that represents wireless operators, handset manufacturers and the rest of the wireless industry in Washington. Mobile Devices, Apps Turned Heads on CTIA Show Floor

Upward of 2,000 mobile software developers crowded into the Moscone West conference hall in San Francisco for most of the week of Oct. 4, learning about the latest news and trends in the mobile device business. Security, operating systems, connectivity advances, storage and new devices were some of the key topics of discussion. Software appliances were also a major news item. A software appliance is a software application that might be combined with just enough operating system for it to run optimally on industry-standard hardware (typically a server) or within a virtual machine. There were connected cars (Ford Taurus and Explorer), connected bikes (which provide travel metrics like average speed and distance)& even a connected exercise station. New GPS and Bluetooth devices caused heads to turn. Samsung walked away with several awards, including one for its Galaxy tablet, which reportedly won’t become available until mid-November. This eWEEK slide show covers some of the highlights of CTIA 2010. – …

iPad Challengers, Windows Phone 7 Devices Absent at CTIA Event

Ahead of the CTIA conference and expo, the ShowStoppers party showed off the Apple, Android, Microsoft and BlackBerry devices and apps that hope to tempt enterprise IT managers and consumers. From Motorola and Samsung to HTC and Apple, the mobile handsets, smartphones, entertainment devices and the apps that make them tick were laid out for perusal. Although apps the iPhone and iPad were represented, nary a tablet hopeful managed to make it to the event. Even less visible were Windows Mobile 6.5 app makers, the imminent release of Windows Phone 7 making much further development here a doubtful enterprise. Here are the highlights of my wanderings through the much smaller than expected bizarre that was the opening salvo in the ongoing trend of the "enterprization" of consumer apps and devices. – …

CTIA Hottest in Show 2010 nominees

Here are my picks for the ten hottest mobile phones, devices and apps that were thrown into the fray to be crowned “hottest in show” at the CTIA 2010. There were plenty of Motorola, Samsung and HTC devices on display in the CTIA competition hall. Running various flavors or Android, BlackBerry OS, Apple iOS and Windows Mobile 6.5 the devices and apps shown here are the ones that caught my eye for enterprise and entertainment purposes. The impending release of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 hung like a pall over the Mobile 6.5 devices. Among the 30 plus devices and apps on display, only one was running on the Apple iPad. This was one more than any other tablet maker, not counting the ‘tweener 5-inch Dell Streak. Speaking of streaks, after just a couple of hours on display, the myriad touch devices looked like a petting zoo after one too many school groups had passed through. At the end of the day, these are still consumer&#151not industrial&#151devices and it showed. The streaky, greasy screens, the malfunctioning slider mechanisms and exhausted batteries took a little glitter off the otherwise tempting holiday display of gadgets and goodies. – …
