Intel Capital Commits $200 Million as Part of President Obama’s “Startup America” Campaign

Intel Capital joins Public and Private Companies and Foundations to Invest in American Entrepreneurs

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Intel Capital continues its Invest in America Fund commitment with new $200M pledge
  • Intel Capital executive joins the Startup America partnership board of advisors
  • Previous $200M Invest in America Fund commitment for 2010 and 2011 was met in less than one year

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 31, 2011 – Intel Corporation announced that it has joined President Obama’s Startup America campaign to strengthen entrepreneurship in the United States. As part of this partnership, and in conjunction with its ongoing Invest in America initiative, Intel Capital, Intel Corporation’s global investment organization has pledged to invest another $200 million in American technology companies and joined the campaign’s board of advisors.

“Intel is dedicated to creating a culture of investment in the United States that supports American startups and the country’s future competitiveness,” said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and Intel executive vice president.  “We are pleased to join the Administration in the effort to help new businesses succeed in the United States and consider this partnership an important opportunity to promote education, innovation and entrepreneurship to maintain a globally competitive economy.”

“Startup America” is a White House campaign to celebrate, inspire and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation. This coordinated public/private effort brings together an alliance of the country’s most innovative entrepreneurs, corporations, universities, foundations, and other leaders, working in concert with a wide range of federal agencies to dramatically increase the prevalence and success of American entrepreneurs.

Intel Capital’s new $200 million commitment comes almost a year after the launch of the Invest in America Alliance, an Intel led initiative supported by many leading venture capital firms and corporations aimed at further anchoring the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage. As part of the Invest in America Alliance, which was announced in Feb. 2010, Intel committed to invest $200 million over two years in U.S.-based growth-oriented industries through its Invest in America Fund. Intel Capital met this original commitment in less than a year.

The Intel Capital Invest in America portfolio companies are addressing areas on the forefront of technology innovation from distributed energy resource management and cloud platform technologies to educational gaming and dynamic mobile video optimization. As these companies grow and create the next breakthroughs in technology innovation, they serve as a strong example of how private sector efforts can complement state and federal programs to foster fast growing, emerging industries with high job creation potential.

Intel believes a culture of investment is essential to keeping the U.S. on the leading edge of technology innovation and stimulating economic activity.  Last week, Intel announced plans to invest $100 million directly into U.S. university research over the next 5 years. Intel Corporation is engaged with a number of university research centers to focus on projects in select technology areas that align with the company’s research agenda including visual computing, mobility, security and embedded solutions.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 26, 2011 – Forty high school seniors from across the U.S. are celebrating their selection as finalists in the country’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition, the Intel Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP). For a list of this year’s finalists, visit www.societyforscience.org/sts.

“The most pressing issues in society today will be solved by curious youth, like these Intel Science Talent Search competitors,” said Shelly Esque, vice president of Intel’s Corporate Affairs Group. “It is their passion for math and science that lays the foundation for America’s innovation.”

Intel has sponsored the Intel Science Talent Search and the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair for 13 and 14 years, respectively. Because Intel views education as the foundation for innovation, over the past decade, Intel and the Intel Foundation have invested more than $1 billion and Intel employees have donated close to 3 million hours toward improving education in more than 60 countries.

Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education, has owned and administered the Science Talent Search since its inception in 1942.

“The Vast Majority Of This Contraction Of Credit Availability To American Industry Has Been By The Larger Banks”

Dennis Santiago – CEO and Managing Director of Institutional Risk Analytics (Chris Whalen’s company) – notes:The really shocking numbers are in the unused line of credit commitments of banks to U.S. business. This is the canary number I like to loo…

JamBase Questionnaire: The Old Ceremony

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Roots of Creation.

Smart, full of different colors, hooky as hell, Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s The Old Ceremony are everything rock should be but usually isn’t. One picks up on the same vibe that infused late period Beatles and early Tom Waits, but tempered with a pleasantly jaundiced eye and a sonic range that touches on tango, folk, sophisticated jazz, Arabic tones, punk and more. What’s more impressive is how they harness this variety into frameworks that get the job done in just a few minutes.

The group has grown from strength to strength on each successive album, with their latest, Tender Age, coalescing their many charms into a series of super catchy cautionary tales for lovers and dreamers. The curveballs come fast on Tender Age, where seemingly dark titles like “Gun To My Head” and “Ruined My Plans” are snappy love songs, one tune is sung in Chinese, and the whole thing simmers down to a gently spiritual hum that sneaks up and leaves one reflective in the best of ways. (Dennis Cook)

The Old Ceremony plays next at the Motorco Music Hall Benefit for Central Park Charter School on Friday, January 28 in Durham, NC, then on Friday, February 4 in Raleigh, NC as part of the Kings WKNC Double Barrel Benefit. After that The Old Ceremony will open a string of dates for Rooney that will hit Philly, D.C. and more Find full tour dates here.

Here’s what TOC singer-songwriter-bandleader Django Haskins had to say to our inquiries.

The Old Ceremony

Instrument of choice: Picasso guitar, barroom piano
Nicknames: “Dave”

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Breaking some eggs. The older I get, the more impatient I am with safe choices.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
The Cars’ Heartbeat City

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
The Walkmen album You and I. It’s the aural equivalent of oversaturated 35mm film: rich, almost rotten colors bleeding into each other nostalgically with occasional bursts of sad yellow light. I lived in that album for at least a year.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Elvis Presley. Or Humphrey Bogart. Or a Harlem Globetrotter. I was a mixed up kid.

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
The surprising one. We always enjoy playing together, but every so often there’ll be a show that shows all the signs of being a downer before we start, but explodes into overjoydom. On nights like that, I usually can’t stop grinning at everything that happens onstage.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
I still have all my fingers.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Rocky beaches. I used to wander beaches in Maine and Nova Scotia in the summers, smashing rocks down on the ground hoping that one would split and reveal a geode. Never found one, but it got out a lot of my childhood angst.

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust or Rum, Sodomy and the Lash by The Pogues

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
We’ve have some great ones. Off the top of my head, I’d say Vatan, a prix fixe Indian place on E. 37th St. in NYC.
10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
The frozen foods section. And house concerts.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Staring listlessly at trees flying by for hours on end. And my cowboy mouth.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles. They actually reinvented themselves over and over. The Stones, though I love them, found one good sound and stuck with it. I prefer variety, if I have to choose only one.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
A long distance bus ride in China that was so crowded that the only place I could stand was on top of a basket of pig parts heading to market.

ACOUSTIC MUSIC FOR GOOD CAUSES

Dispatch

State RadioChad Stokes’ former Dispatch bandmate Brad Corrigan is among the latest artist additions to Calling All Crows’ 3rd Annual Benefit Show on December 10th to commemorate Human Rights Day at the House of Blues in Boston. Also joining the lineup is singer/songwriter Erin Coughlin, who collaborated with Stokes on State Radio’s 2004 acoustic EP Simmer Kane.

A limited number of tickets to the show remain and are available now via Ticketmaster and without ticketing fees at the Orpheum Theater Box Office.

Corrigan and Coughlin join an all-star lineup of acoustic musicians that kicked off the Chad Stokes & Friends Tour this past Wednesday night at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, making stops in Toronto, Buffalo, Burlington, D.C., and Philadelphia before the finale in Boston. Previously announced artists include siblings Matt Embree of Rx Bandits and Lauren Coleman of Pebaluna as well as Stokes’ independent Ruff Shod Records labelmates Bonnie Paine of Elephant Revival and The White Buffalo.

All shows will feature musicians performing stripped down versions of both original material and covers, performed solo and as collaborations. As in previous years, Stokes is expected to pull from both the State Radio and Dispatch catalogs. He also plans to debut songs off his upcoming solo record, due out in early 2011.

Proceeds will benefit Stokes’ service organization, Calling All Crows, which he co-founded with his partner and tour manager Sybil Gallagher. Calling All Crows works to mobilize musicians and their fans to empower women around the world.

In nearly every city on the tour, musicians will join fans in pre-show service projects organized by Calling All Crows aimed at empowering women. From Global Write-a- thons with Amnesty International to preparing a holiday meal for pregnant refugee and low-income women and their mentors, everyone involved with the tour will have the opportunity to lift up and celebrate women along the way.

TRIBUTE CONCERT OUT ON DVD FEB. 22; TOUR STARTS MARCH 24; SPECIAL AIRS NOV.

Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck paid fitting
tribute to Les Paul last
summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist’s 95th birthday
by playing his friend and mentor’s music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub
that Paul played every Monday for 14 years before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as “A Celebration of Les Paul,” Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz
Club in June 2010. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with
a tour de force performance of classics Paul recorded with Mary Ford, “How High The Moon,” “Vaya Con Dios” and
“Mockin’ Bird Hill,” along with such rock and roll standards as “Twenty Flight Rock” and “Walking In The Sand.”

For those left off the guest list, Eagle Rock Entertainment and ATCO will offer this one of a kind performance to
purchase. Rock and Roll Party to Honor Les Paul will be available on DVD and CD February 22. A
PBS special of the event, Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul, is set to premiere on November 27 and air throughout
December. Check local listings for times.

Following these releases, Beck will take the “Rock And Roll Party” on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once
again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage
at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul’s “How High The Moon.” Further details about tickets
will be announced in the coming weeks.

Girl Talk: Extensive 2011 Tour

2011 SHOWS BEGIN IN CLEVELAND IN JANUARY

“Mr. Gillis aims to please. His music is a collage of hits, recent and old, that are instantly recognizable to just about everyone in the crowd. Each one – from Jay-Z to Styx to the Ramones to Missy Elliott to Nirvana – draws a cheer within a few notes. Mr. Gillis samples the songs’ obvious hooks. He isn’t a hipster showing off how deeply he’s dug into his collection; he’s a fellow fan, reactivating remembered pop pleasures.” – Jon Pareles, The New York Times

With almost 300 shows under his belt, and hardly a full week off, since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008 and Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) has announced another 40-city tour, all set to take place in 2011 before March is even over!
