A new digital paper tests a new model for news

EIGHT years ago Apple launched iTunes, a digital store selling music singles for 99 cents apiece. For record companies ravaged by piracy, it seemed like a good deal. Only later did many come to regret allowing another company to set retail prices and to get between them and their customers. On February 2nd Apple and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation launched the Daily, an iPad newspaper that will cost 99 cents a week. It will not dominate the digital news market the way iTunes came to rule the digital music market. But it sets a disruptive precedent or two.

The Daily is a mixture of the newfangled and the old-fashioned. It has whizzy graphics, including video and “360-degree” pictures. Sport fans can receive the twitterings of their favourite players. Unlike most websites, though, the Daily is available only in America. It features outmoded things such as editorials and paid reporters. China plans high-speed rail to Singapore, Daily says

China’s southern Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region will make building a high-speed rail link from its main city of Nanning to connect to a planned Singapore-bound line its main task in the next five years, the China Daily said.

The construction of the rail link to Pingxiang, a city near China’s border with Vietnam, will start in the second half of this year, the paper said citing the local development and reform commission.

French newspapers: Too close to power

A malaise that goes back more than 300 years

FRANCE’S second-largest economic daily, La Tribune, has suspended debt repayments while it seeks new investors. Le Monde, the country’s greatest newspaper, found new investors in June but seems to have lost its way and is looking for a new editorial director. Bakchich, a satirical weekly, said on January 11th that it will close for want of funds.

France’s national newspapers are shrivelling. The eight main national dailies together sell 1.2m copies a day—about the same as Britain’s slumping Daily Mirror. News-stand sales in November were 10% lower than a year earlier. For La Tribune the fall was a disastrous 33%. The overall drop in sales, including postal and delivered subscriptions, was less steep. …

Kosovo daily criticizes Serbian deputy PM

Priština-based daily Koha Ditore criticized Serbian Deputy PM Božidar Đelić over his statement about Serbia’s fight for Kosovo during his visit to Prizren.

Đelić visited Prizren on Christmas and spoke about Serbia’s “fight” for Kosovo and said that Belgrade would not renounce Kosovo.

Geneva-based daily Le Temps reports that Hashim Thaci was preparing his rise in the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in Switzerland in mid-90s.
