Each year, Fortune magazine comes out with its list of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For." And this year, IT companies are well-represented on the list. Four of them even made the top 10 including: No. 4, Google; No. 5, NetApp; No. 10, DreamWorks Animation and taking the #1 spot as the best company to work for is SAS. So what makes these companies so great? Host Ashley Daley breaks it down; And speaking of jobs to fill. This month, Google announced that CEO Eric Schmidt is stepping down and co-founder Larry Page is taking over as chief executive. Almost immediately, Google announced a 6,200-person hiring spree; Starting Feb. 2, Apples iPad will host a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily. The digital publication will be created by News Corp and cost readers 99 cents per week; Google has penciled in a big Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet demonstration at its Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., for Feb. 2. The new OS build, named Honeycomb has been "redesigned from the ground up" to fit the larger screens populating tablet computers; On Friday, Microsoft issued an advisory on a Windows security vulnerability after exploit code for the bug went public. The bug, which lies in the MHTML protocol handler, can be exploited to cause data leakage. Specifically, it would be similar to that of server-side cross-site-scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities, where for instance, an attacker could construct an HTML link designed to trigger a malicious script and somehow convince the targeted user to click it. The online encyclopedia first went live on Jan. 15, 2001, and is now among the Internets most visited sites even bigger than eBay; On January 12th, Apple took to New York City to announce the worst kept secret ever, that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. The smartphone will be available for pre-order on Feb 3rd and for purchase on Feb 10th. Ashley breaks down the similarities and differences of features on each carriers iPhone; Technology giant Dell announced it would consolidate its Public and Large Enterprise business units into a single organization. The company said the creation of a single Public-Large Enterprise business unit is designed to enhance Dell’s position as a provider of open, capable and affordable IT technology solutions and services; Earlier this week the company also launched the Vostro 460 tower for small businesses, the first Dell SMB desktop PC to offer Intels new “SandyBridge” quad-core processors. The 460 supports a variety of Genuine Windows 7 operating systems, has a 350W power supply and an up to 150W graphics card, among other features; Now, with more and more SAP systems getting connected to the Web, the security landscape for many organizations is changing. Just how much and what those changes mean will be highlighted at the upcoming Black Hat DC conference by Mariano Nuñez Di Croce, director of research and development for Onapsis. Black Hat DC 2011 will run from Jan. 16-19 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City hotel in Arlington, Va.

Join host Ashley Daley as she catches up with Eric Lundquist, live from the Consumer Electronics Show floor in Las Vegas. Eric lets us in on predictions for 2011 and the top new product releases for the year, such as the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Motorola Cliq 2, the Motorola Droid Bionic, and the Motorola Xoom tablet, which is based on the Android 3.0 version optimized for tablets. Samsung, meanwhile, will launch this year a WiFi-only Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Player, and the Infuse 4G, an AT&T handset with a 4.5-inch screen. Also big this year; tablet PCs. Going into 2010, netbooks were all the rage both in the consumer market and the enterprise. But as soon as Apple introduced the iPad tablet and several similar devices followed it, netbooks lost their value to customers around the world. The industry is getting an early indication of how strongly buyers are interested in tablets during this years CES. Verizon Wireless is also making big announcements at CES. It announced a suite of 10 forthcoming 4G LTE devices including smartphones from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung; tablets from Motorola and Samsung; a MiFi from Novatel Wireless and a mobile hotspot from Samsung; and two notebooks from HP. Pretty soon your mobile phone will also be able to moonlight as your mobile wallet. Thats right, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have teamed up to create a new mobile commerce network, calling it ISIS. It will work by using near-field communication technology with short-range, high-frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The tri-network venture has a customer-base of over 200 million and expects to launch in “key geographic markets” in the next 18 months; Facebook has announced a new unified messaging system that provides users with e-mail. Users will also have the ability to communicate with one another on the Web and on mobile phones regardless of whether they are using e-mail, text messaging, or online chat services. The new service encourages users to sign up for an e-mail address ending in @facebook.com, but of course will not be mandatory; With 2011 right around the corner, what do you all believe will be the key business trends of 2011? And what are the technologies to watch as we enter the new year? Cisco is releasing new software called SocialMiner to help companies see and keep track of what consumers are saying on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as blogs and other online networking environments. Not only will the new software allow companies to track these conversations, but it also allows companies to join in on them and respond to those comments; Come Nov. 8, IBM will be rolling out a new version of Lotus Connections, called Lotus Connections Next, and will supposedly cut out the social media noise. New features gleaned from IBM’s Cognos business analytics unit will be applied across the myriad recommendations, ratings, rankings, and reputations capabilities in Lotus Connections Next; And of course, what would our lives be if we didnt discuss Facebook at least once today? The social networking site is releasing its new Single Sign On feature. This will allow users logged into Facebook to easily log into applications that support SSO with a single click meaning youll no longer have to enter your user name and password a million times to access each app. Signing in once will sign you in to all of your participating apps. Facebook SSO is available now on Android apps such as Groupon, Loopt, SCVNGR, Yelp, Flixster, and Zynga Poker, with SSO for iPhone apps available soon; Google, Yahoo, and Bing have some fresh competition. Launched Nov. 1, a new search engine site named Blekko promises a new, curated form of search customized by its users. Blekko users can create slashtags, which help them search only the sites users want. This cuts out the spam of irrelevant information and links associated with classic search engines.

The iPad could soon be getting a makeover. The Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, and Research In Motions PlayBook are just a few of the tablets either already available for sale or slated to hit store shelves within the next couple of months. With that competitive pressure building, its inevitable that Apple will include a bevy of new features in the next version of the iPad; Its a battle of words between two of the worlds biggest CEOs. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is squaring off with Google CEO Eric Schmidt, each exchanging harsh words regarding each others application stores; Microsoft is taking its next step into the cloud with the beta launch of Office 365, which combines Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Lync Online into a unified cloud platform. It will provide anywhere-access to e-mail, documents, contacts, and calendars on nearly any device and works seamlessly with Microsoft Office and other programs many users already count on everyday; Online shoppers beware! Security researchers analyzing spam and virus activity in 2010s third quarter saw an uptick in virus activity, hinting at new botnets on the rise. They say this could be a sign that spammers are building new botnets by taking over more computers, just in time for the holiday sales and increased online shopping. Security experts warn, as always, to be on the lookout for suspicious e-mail language, and exercise extreme caution when clicking on links.

Apple is planning to manufacture an iPhone capable of running on Verizons CDMA network. A late-2010 production start would pave the road for Verizon to offer the iPhone in early 2011; Websense is upgrading its Defensio technology to add new capabilities to combat malicious links on Facebook. In a seven-day analysis, Websense discovered 93 malicious links on Lady Gagas Facebook fan page, along with an additional 372 spam links; The complex and malicious worm named Stuxnet, was first introduced to the public back in July by Belarus-based security firm VirusBlokAda. Just last month, Iran admitted its first nuclear power plant had been hit with Stuxnet. Though the worm didn’t do any damage, its presence highlighted the malware’s potential. So what should you know? eWEEK reporter Brian Prince takes you step by step into the world of Stuxnet- what it does, how it does it and what you may not know about the worm, in a special slideshow on eweek.com; Motorola, debuted its holiday lineup of Android smartphones at the CTIA Enterprise & Applications show in San Francisco on Oct. 5. The phone maker’s collection is led by the Android 2.2-based Droid Pro, which includes AuthenTec IPSec multiheaded VPN integration, remote wipe of device and SD card, and complex password support. The journal, of course citing unnamed sources, says the new tablet called, Blackpad, could be unveiled as early as next week; Facebook is attempting to create virtual currency, with credits. Meaning, people can now start feeding their computer money in return for virtual goods. Oracle is introducing the first major new release of the Tuxedo application server since it acquired the technology with the buyout in BEA Systems back in 2008. The new edition, called Oracle Tuxedo 11g, will support the Python and Ruby development languages as well as the long-time mainstays of C/C++ and COBOL.

Engine Yard, a provider of a cloud computing platform for Ruby and Ruby on Rails applications, has announced a new professional support offering for JRuby developers. Commercial JRuby support from Engine Yard includes developer assistance and advice on how to tune and optimize JRuby in production environments.

With reviews of the Apple iPad being released, Sprint has been quick to remind consumers of their 4G Overdrive high-speed hotspot offering. Sprint claims that on its 4G network, the iPad can surf the Web at speeds up to 10 times faster than on a 3G network.

IBM announces the IBM Global Entrepreneur initiative. It provides start-ups with no-charge access to industry-specific technologies in a cloud computing environment. Under the new program, IBM will provide access to its Research community as well as sales, marketing and technical skills.

Google Android users can now use Opera Mini 5 on their smart phones. The new mobile browser includes features such as Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, and boosted speed. On March 4, Opera announced Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile 5.x and 6.x devices; Google has released Google Bike Directions. The new feature will let bikers in on the best route and give you insight into nearby biking trails; Intel showed off its Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, the chip makers first six-core CPU for consumers. Codenamed Gulftown, the Core i7-980X comes with more cores and computing threads, and a larger L3 cache, than the current i7-975, and all at the same price; NAS storage specialist Buffalo Technology recently linked up with NovaStor to provide cost-conscious businesses with backup software solutions. Worlds Greenest Data Center

A new data center at Syracuse University was built from the ground up with energy use in mind. When it becomes fully operational this month it is expected to use about 50 percent less energy than a typical facility in operation today, making it one of the greenest data centers in the world. And going forward, the center will serve as a test bed to prove out new energy-saving technologies. Known as the Green Data Center or GDC, the center came about through a joint partnership between the university, IBM, and the state of New York. Join eWEEK reporter Ashley Daley for a rundown of this weeks headlines. Google, Microsoft and other IT companies are donating their money and skill sets to help Haiti in the wake of a massive earthquake that devastated the countrys capital, Port-au-Prince, on Jan. 12. Google collaborated with GeoEye to make satellite imagery of the earthquakes aftermath available to users of Google Earth; Attack code targeting the Internet Explorer vulnerability used to hit Google and other companies has hit the Web. According to McAfee, researchers have seen references to the code which exploits an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer on mailing lists and have confirmed that the code was published on at least one Website. The code was used to attack Google and others in a spate of cyber-attacks believed to have originated in China. The attacks have sparked controversy and prompted Google to threaten to pull out of China altogether. Officials at the U.S. State Department have stated they plan to get answers from China as to what happened in the coming days; A small amount of cocaine was discovered in a restricted shuttle hangar, outside a bathroom at NASA. NASA has since ordered a safety review of the Shuttle Discovery, which is scheduled to depart March, 18th, to check for any mistakes made to the spaceflight hardware. All of the nearly 200 persons who have access to the facility will be receiving a drug test as well; Google recently slashed $100 off the price of the phone for existing T-Mobile subscribers. The Nexus One will now cost all existing T-Mobile subscribers $279.

Here to give us a wrap up of went down is eWeek reporter Nick Kolakowski, who was covering every inch of the show floor; At CES, 3D technology leader RealD announced agreements with some of the industrys top consumer electronics brands including Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic, to support the stereoscopic RealD Format for the delivery and display of high definition 3D in the home. Samsung, DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor also announced a global strategic alliance for the delivery of a complete 3D home entertainment solution in 2010; Green IT adoption is on the rise. In its quarterly look at green IT, Forrester found that as the global recession begins to come back, businesses are starting to ramp up investments in green IT. Well break down the reasons why; SonicWall recently released its Global Management System (GMS) 6.0. The companys updates allow GMS administrators to define and push policies for Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and e-mail security appliances at the device, device group, or global level.
