Big High: Live Clips, Debut with Screaming Tree’s Barrett Martin

SEATTLE’S GOT ANOTHER GREAT ROCK BAND

After being blown away by Big High at last year’s Summer Meltdown (see rave here), our expectations were high for the band’s debut record and their newly minted self-titled album more than lives up to anything we were thinking!

Grounded in all the stuff that makes classic rock classic, yet tempered with an immediacy and intelligence that feels very modern, Big High is the kind of album one plays on repeat and keeps finding new things to like over & over. Singer Mesa belts it out like a controlled blast furnace, melding the grit of Clutch’s Neil Fallon with the lover man glide of vintage Robert Plant – seriously, he’s that good. The band is a lean yet expansive combination of guitarist Ari Joshua, bassist Sandy and drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, Tuatara and Mad Season fame. The album also features longtime Seattle-ite Peter Buck (R.E.M.) as guest guitarist on four stellar tracks.

Big High embarks on their first West Coast tour in August (dates below) and here’s a couple recent clips of them in action.

Big High West Coast Dates

August 21st – Hempfest Mainstage, Seattle, WA
August 26th – Dante’s, Portland, OR
August 28th – The Bouquet, Boise, ID
September 1st – The Viper Room, Los Angeles, CA
September 2nd-3rd – Recording Sessions, Joshua Tree, CA
September 4th – The Hemlock, San Francisco, CA

US Air Guitar Championships 7/22

US AIR GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL FINALS

JULY 22, 2010: THE FILLMORE AT IRVING PLAZA NEW YORK, NY

HAND-PICKED PROFESSIONAL AIR GUITARISTS FROM 16 CITIES DESCEND UPON NEW YORK

Ricky Stinkfingers at Brooklyn Bowl from usairguitar.com

After being outbid by competing cities two straight years, the Big Apple has been given the honor of hosting the US Air Guitar Championships National Finals. On July 22 at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza, The US Air Guitar National
Finals will pit each of the 16 winners from each city against one another in a battle for Air Guitar supremacy. The
winner will be crowned the 2010 US Air Guitar Champion, and will then move on to the Air Guitar World
Championships in Finland to take on other National Champions from around the world.

US Air Guitar is currently in the process of assembling an unprecedented array of talent: 16 of the nation’s fiercest
and finest face-melters will go head-to-head to prove to one and all that they should represent the red, white, blue,
and undecideds at the World Air Guitar Championships in Finland. Veteran 2-time US Champion and 3-time New
York Regional Champion William Ocean will defend his title against the toughest and freshest competition
he has ever faced. Thus far, veterans Windhammer, Ricky Stinkfingers, and Lance the
Shred
have won the Regionals in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC respectively. But a crop of new talent
has also begun to upset past masters in qualifying rounds, including Philadelphia’s impromptu performance of
wildcard The High Drator. Is this a changing of the guard or will experience prevail in the end?

Our nation’s capitol hosted the Finals last year at the famed 9:30 Club, where William Ocean edged out local
favorites Lance the Shred and Sanjar the Destroyer to take his second US Crown in three years. In 2008,
San Francisco hosted the Finals, sending one of the nation’s finest Air Guitarists Hot Lixx Hulahan to
Finland where he went on to win the World title and become the third American in seven years achieve Global Air
Guitar immortality. New York and Los Angeles were home to the first five National Finals, which produced world
champions C-Diddy and Soynk Rok. This year, winners from around the country will descend
once again upon New York City, where the next US Air Guitar great will lay claim to the 2010 title.

Co-founder Kriston Rucker said of the choice, “New York City is where US Air Guitar hosted our first ever
competition, back in the days of C-Diddy, W and dollar slices. After a couple years away, we felt like bringing the
Finals home, back in the New York groove. The greatest city on earth has been very good to us. We intend to pay her
back in airness.”

REMAINING US AIR GUITAR 2010 REGIONAL COMPETITIONS

Soulsavers: Tour Behind Album
Stream Broken For Free Here

Soulsavers, Featuring Mark Lanegan, Tour North America In Support Of New Album, Broken

Soulsavers

Soulsavers‘ genre-bending album of wide-ranging majesty, Broken (check it out below), was recently released digitally on Columbia Records, with a physical release date still pending. Joining founding production team Rich Machin and Ian Glover on Soulsavers’ haunting third album was an inspirational group of musicians who give the album a more live and open feel than their previous releases. At the forefront are the vocals of Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), whose profound, growling croon is the perfect match for Soulsavers’ broader, richer vein of sepulchral cinerama. Duets on Broken include vocals from Spiritualized‘s Jason Pierce, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, and Faith No More frontman, Mike Patton. Also appearing on the album are bassist Martyn LeNoble (Porno for Pyros, Jane’s Addiction), the dark, sultry tones of Red Ghost (aka Rosa Agostino) and Richard Hawley.

Praise for Soulsavers:

Q, 4/5 stars – “Mark Lanegan reprises his role as a latter day Johnny Cash, while fellow alt-rock alumni Jason Pierce, Mike Patton and Richard Hawley make fleeting cameos. The result could be the soundtrack to the greatest spaghetti western never made.”

NME, 8/10 stars – “A tumultuous amalgamation of zoned-out jazz lines, wistful soul vocals, moody strings, dreamlike electronic sequences and compact rock… A veritable Dante’s Inferno of an album.”
