Joyent Unveils Its Next-Gen Cloud System

The company says SmartDataCenter is currently utilized by many customers on Joyent’s public cloud, JoyentCloud.com, and in Dell Data Center Solutions. – Cloud system software maker Joyent Jan. 19 introduced a new version of what

With the release of the latest solutions for its converged data center strategy, Dell is taking aim at rivals Cisco and HP. Dell says their rivals’ offerings are closed and proprietary, while Dells is open and flexible. However, one analyst says that to a large extent, that is a matter of perceptions. Cisco and HP officials also have said that the tight integration of their products means greater benefits to their customers.

HP Gets Networking, Security, VOIP, China from 3Com Acquisition

Hewlett-Packard’s $2.7 billion bid for 3Com will enable HP to fill some holes in its ProCurve product portfolio as it continues to challenge Cisco Systems in the $40 billion networking space, and as the two sides collide in the burgeoning competition for converged data center solutions. According to some analysts, Cisco owned about 52 percent of the networking market, while HP and 3Com were a distant second and third, followed by a host of other vendors. Combined, HP and 3Com will have about 20 percent of the market, making it a solid No. 2 to Cisco. The deal also adds to HP’s unified communications story and gives it greater traction in the important Chinese market.

HP to Buy 3Com for $2.7B

Hewlett-Packard is moving to expand its ProCurve networking business by buying 3Com for $2.7 billion, putting it in a better position to compete with Cisco Systems. The deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2010, will give HP a greater networking presence in the enterprise, stronger network security capabilities and a larger presence in China. It also will help HP augment its converged data center solutions.

Ethernet Switch Market Will Rebound in 2010: Dell’Oro

Driven by the demand for 10GbE and the moves by such vendors as Cisco, HP and IBM to a more converged data center, DellOro Group analysts expect that the market for Ethernet switches will begin to grow again next year. However, the sharp decline in the market in the first quarter of 2009 will make for a difficult year, with revenues dropping by 20 percent.
