Vertica has a number of performance enhancements on the menu for the upcoming version of its column database. When the company releases Vertica 3.5 later this year, users can expect new capabilties around data storage and processing to be included in the mix, as well as support for MapReduce.

IBM Finally Upgrades Its XIV Storage System

XIV’s Tier 1 external-disk system is completely distributed. It packages all data storage into 1MB chunks and spreads them around the system, so that no one or two disks have to handle most of the workload. This saves on disk life and increases performance.
