Qantas A380s to resume flights 23 days after blowout

Qantas Airways, Australia’s biggest carrier, will resume Airbus SAS A380 services on Nov. 27, 23 days after grounding its fleet of superjumbos following a mid-flight engine explosion.

Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce will be on the first flight, which will go to London from Sydney via Singapore, he said at a media briefing today. The carrier will conduct further inspections with Airbus, regulators and engine-maker Rolls-Royce Group Plc before resuming other routes, it said in a statement.

Qantas has begun modifying as many as 16 Trent 900 engines following the Nov. 4 blowout that caused the grounding of A380s representing about 17% of its international capacity. Demand to fly on the airline’s six superjumbos is likely to withstand the explosion, said Jason Teh, who helps manage A$3 billion ($3.9 billion) at Investors Mutual in Sydney.

“It’s like if there was a shark attack in the previous week — it wouldn’t stop me going into the water the following week as long the shark is caught,” he said. “You assume that all airlines will meet strict safety standards.”

The carrier will have four 450-seat A380s in service before Dec 25, including two new ones, Joyce said. The airline is also due to receive two superjumbos next year. Qantas had been flying its A380s on long-haul routes to Europe and North America.

‘It’s so quiet’
“If the airline has made the assessment that it’s time to fly, then I would be on that aircraft,” said Binit Somaia, an analyst at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation in Sydney. “I would rather fly the A380 anytime. It’s so quiet.”

The carrier has taken the 16 engines identified as having “a bigger likelihood of having a problem” out of service, Joyce said. Any necessary changes will be made before they are put back onto planes, he said.

Joyce said it is too early to estimate the cost of the disruption caused by grounding the A380s or to comment on whether the carrier will seek compensation.

Macquarie Group said in a note that the cost would likely be about A$20 million as Sydney-based Qantas “generally minimized the disruption.” The carrier used Boeing Co. 747s and other aircraft as substitutes while the A380s were grounded.

Qantas rose 0.4% to A$2.64 at the 4:10 p.m. market close in Sydney. The stock has lost 8% since Nov. 3. Rolls-Royce slumped 9.8% in London trading in the period.

Emergency landing
Qantas, which has never had a fatal jet accident, grounded its superjumbos after one of the four Trent 900 engines fitted to an A380 exploded in the skies above Indonesia. The plane made an emergency landing in Singapore, with the rear covering of an engine blown off and a wing damaged by shrapnel. None of the 466 people onboard were injured.

The blast, which Rolls-Royce said was caused by an oil fire, prompted the European Aviation Safety Agency to issue an airworthiness directive to A380 operators with Trent 900 engines requiring them to inspect turbines at regular intervals.

Singapore Airlines, with 11 Trent 900-powered A380s in its fleet, has replaced three engines. Deutsche Lufthansa AG, the only other Trent 900 operator, announced plans for its second swap last week. About 40 Trent 900s worldwide may need repairs to replace a faulty part, Qantas’s Joyce said Nov 18.

Emirates Airline, the largest customer for the A380, and Air France-KLM Group fly superjumbos fitted with engines from a General Electric Co. and Pratt & Whitney venture.

Rolls-Royce, the world’s second-largest maker of engines, has said it will miss its 2010 profit target because of the Trent 900 blowout.

Airbus, which is due to hand over more than 20 A380s next year, has said deliveries may be disrupted as it works with Rolls-Royce to help existing customers replace engines. The planemaker plans to press the London-based engine-maker for compensation.

SIA: affected A380s to be out of service for up to 2 days

Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) said all three Airbus A380 aircraft with engine problems were returning to Singapore and could take up to two days to be repaired.

Chief Executive Chew Choon Seng told a media and analysts conference that the aircraft should arrive in the city-state on Wednesday evening and there were enough replacement engine available to carry out the swap.

Earlier, Singapore Airlines said it will replace engines on three of its Airbus A380 planes after finding oil stains on them, almost a week after Australian rival Qantas (QAN.AX) grounded its A380 fleet due to an engine failure.

The wine boom in Hong Kong: Days of wine and tulips

A tax cut uncorks a boom

IN 2004 a businessman named Jim Thompson leased a set of old munitions bunkers in Hong Kong and converted them into wine cellars. It was a bold move. Few East Asians then had a taste for fine wine, and Mr Thompson’s firm, Crown Worldwide Group, was accustomed to the steadier business of shipping expatriates’ furniture around the globe. But Crown made strenuous efforts to seduce potential customers with lavish tastings and other jolly social events. The venture grew steadily until, four years later, the bunkers had 100,000 bottles in store.

All this was despite a heavy sales tax that suppressed demand for wine in Hong Kong. In early 2008 that tax was cut to zero. Since then, 400,000 more bottles have been crammed into Crown’s bunkers, filling them to the brim and forcing the firm to build a vast new warehouse. …

Days of two-third majority govts over

LAHORE – Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday predicted that there would be coalition governments in the future, and the political parties should be mentally prepared for such a political set-up in the country.
“Forget about the concept of forming governments with a two-thirds majority. Now coalition governments would be formed in future,” the premier said in an informal chat with a group of journalists at his DHA residence. Prime Minister’s brother and member Punjab Assembly Syed Mujtaba Gilani was also present on the occasion.
Gilani said given the voting pattern in the previous elections, political parties should now understand that it would not be possible for any party to gain a two-thirds majority in the assemblies.
Giving examples of India and Great Britain, the PM said the idea of forming coalition governments was also gaining acceptance across the world. “We will have to cultivate the habit of working together,” he remarked.
Talking about current political set-up in the country, he said it was vital that all coalition govts in the country remain intact.
He believed that no single party could resolve the problems being faced by the country. “Now is the time to meet all challenges collectively,” he said, adding if the present coalition governments failed to deliver, it would be very unfortunate and bad for the country.
The prime minister expressed his strong belief in the policy of political reconciliation, saying it was the only way to tackle all the challenges.
He said present assemblies should complete their tenure, as this would bring political stability in the country. “If we fail to deliver now, the people would lose faith in democracy,” he further stated.
Replying to a question about taking the PML-N leadership into confidence over granting of extension in service to Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the prime minister said it was purely an administrative decision and he did not want to make it a political one.
He, however, said he had tried to contact Mian Nawaz Sharif two hours before the announcement of the decision to inform him about the development, but he was not available.
“His son took my call and told me that his father was travelling and hence not in a position to talk to him,” he told journalists.
Commenting on US Chief of the Joint Staff Admiral Mike Mullen about the alleged presence of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, the premier said, “If anybody has actionable evidence in this regard, the govt would take necessary action.”
He said Pakistan had strategic relations with the United States, and the latter needed Pakistan to fight the war against terrorism. “But it is all the more important in this context that we should trust each other,” he stressed.
Talking about Pak-India relations, Gilani said all outstanding issues could be resolved only by negotiations and not through wars. “Both countries house a greater number of poor, and we should spend our resources on their welfare,” he said.
Responding to a question about the controversy on Afghan Transit Trade Agreement, the PM said he had instructed the foreign minister and the ministers for finance and trade to take the Parliament and the media into confidence about the agreement, which, he said, was yet to be approved by the cabinet.
About political developments in Azad Kashmir, he said it was an internal affair of the Muslim Conference, and the government had kept itself away from whatever was happening there. “We will accept whatever decision is made by it,” he assured.
Talking about achievements of his government, Gilani mentioned ending the dictatorship, supremacy of the Constitution, independent judiciary and consensus over NFC Award as the steps, which had strengthened the democratic system.
He said it was the biggest success of the present government to unite all political forces on one platform for eradication of terrorism, adding that it was the reason behind governmentÂ’s success in its efforts to tackle the issue.
He also especially mentioned Benazir Income Support Programme by which the govt was providing relief to the poor in a transparent manner.
Agencies add: Gilani said the govt would give the people of Fata the gift of democracy after the successful completion of the ongoing operation against the extremists.
He went on to say that unlike the Kalabagh Dam, which had become an issue after being politicised, the govt made sure that the Bhasha Dam project would not fall a prey to politics.
Gilani said “No politician can ever say that he supports the terrorists.”

Irsa to reopen C-J Link Canal after three days

ISLAMABAD – The row over distribution of water was amicably resolved during a crucial meeting of IRSA chaired by its newly appointed Chairman Engineer Abdul Raqib Khan here on Wednesday.
Sources informed that all the provinces agreed on water distribution formula and the demand of Punjab to open Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal was accepted with some conditions. According to sources, it has been decided to open Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal with a condition to ensure water availability in Chashma downstream, 285,000 cusecs, Guddu downstream, 155,000 cusecs, and Sukkur upstream, 135,000 cusecs.
It was agreed in the meeting that after ensuring abovement-ioned quantity of water – that would mainly be supplied to Sindh – Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal would be opened.
The sources were of the view that though the Canal should be opened without any condition, it was good to reach some decision, adding the original problem was attached with India and the Government needed to fight its case with New Delhi that was stealing its water.
Our monitoring desk adds: INDUS River System Authority (IRSA) Wednesday increased the water share of Sindh to 240,000 cusecs, reported a private TV channel.
The decision was made at a meeting in Islamabad, which was chaired by Irsa Chairman Raqeeb Khan, who was appointed Tuesday both as the member from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Chairmen of Irsa.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Raqeeb said Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal would be reopened after three days following the inflow of water through Guddu Barrage.
The meeting decided to raise the water share of Sindh to 240,000 cusecs, that of Balochistan to 13,000 cusecs, and of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to 3,000 cusecs, adding that the decisions had been made with consensus.
The IRSA Chairman said the water needs of Sindh would be met within the next couple of days.
