Getting to New York’s Madison Square Garden for Phish‘s New Year’s run was a
cakewalk compared to the blizzard
conditions that had universally complicated travel plans earlier in the week in Worcester. Outside the hallowed
venue, hundreds
of hopeful, ticketless souls wandered the tightly packed blocks of midtown Manhattan. Inside MSG, site of so many
notable moments in this band’s history, Phish closed the year in which they
truly
returned to form with three focused, sharp sets that were also not short on collective improvisation.

The first half of the first set was a perfectly paced party that also included its share of surprises. “Punch You in the
Eye” and “AC/DC Bag”, despite being two of the oldest and most frequently played staples in the Phish repertoire,
were played with real commitment by the whole band. Trey particularly zeroed in on the climax of the
latter
tune. As “AC/DC Bag” concluded with its upwardly spiraling fade out, the mid tempo funk of “Moma Dance”
emerged and quickly became the song when the band and audience truly relaxed into the set, the evening, and
perhaps the reality of another passing year. The clip of the infrequently played “Scent of a Mule” took the energy up
a notch, and was spot on throughout, including the tricky to navigate transitions from the klezmer jam back to the
bluegrass outro. And, as someone who won’t shy away from saying that Phish sometimes has an uphill climb with
accurate vocal harmonies, “Mule” was quite well sung.

The rest of the first set was a pleasantly mixed bag of debuts (the instantly likable shuffle of Phish’s next FM chance,
“Burn that Bridge”), classic staples from the near-yet-far era of the mid nighties (“Weigh” and “Beauty of my
Dreams”) and the downright unfamiliar (“Gone”, the obscure track from Party Time, that in my opinion may
have
been this set’s only misstep, inserting a pensive, tentative note into an otherwise celebratory collection of tunes).
“Rock n’ Roll” closed out the early set with a textbook jam that demonstrated Trey’s newfound climax-building
concision, a distillation of years of experience in the rarified field of jam artistry.

After a relatively short break, the band returned and burned through a non-stop second set that never let up in
intensity. Trey’s recent, more aggressive distortion tone led the charge on “Wilson” and a searing, Zappa-
fied “46
Days”. The whole band appeared recharged for this set and ready to lay down some serious psychedelic prog-funk.
As “Sand” opened up into a weave of pointed staccato accents, the room exploded and the evening’s promise began
to truly come to fruition. In a year of many versions of “Down with Disease”, this outing delivered with both heroic,
major key riffage and twisted excursions into darkness. “Ghost” was also well balanced between its creepy funk
verses and a long, lighthearted major I-IV section. On a dime, the band collectively began to slow down until Trey
counted off a wonderfully executed “You Enjoy Myself” that included full blown “Manteca” choruses interspersed in
the jam, the bass solo, and in the final vocal improv that closed out the set. I think it’s safe to say the folks who
have dutifully carried around that “Manteca” banner all year were feeling pretty good right about now.

“Meatstick” ambled to life to open the New Year’s set and at first didn’t even hint at the 19 minute spectacle that was
to follow. After the Japanese lyrics, a quartet of men dressed in traditional African garb entered stage right and sang
a few choruses, followed by a Mariachi band stage left, followed by an increasingly diverse collection of cultural
representatives all dressed in traditional outfits. Around this time, either a pre-recorded version of “Meatstick”
began playing or the front of house engineer had live-looped eight bars of the tune. Either way, the band was
subtley ushered off stage while the 50+ ensemble of dancers and singers went through a tightly choreographed
Broadway-style routine in the front of the stage and on risers behind the amps. Then the loop stopped, and the
company sang “Meatstick” in a chromatically ascending pattern until Phish emerged in the Hot Dog from New Year’s
past! Thousands of hot dog colored (and shaped) balloons began falling as the band, all smiles, traversed the
rooftop of the arena tossing foam wieners down on the crowd. Eventually landing on the stage, the band seamlessly
continued the tune until the countdown. A brief but incendiary “After Midnight” followed and served as the bridge
into the rest of the first set of 2011.

The whole band outdid themselves on the version of “Backwards Down the Number Line” that followed. This was a
valentine to the crowd, managing to simultaneously channel both a heart-tugging poignancy and a ferocious energy.
The same could be said of “Waste”, which induced memories of the many years and hundreds of shows many in
attendance had experienced together. Trey wove knots of Leslie-drenched notes at the song’s conclusion, and
eventually fell into a long, patient “Slave to the Traffic Light”. The band gathered at the front of the stage for the
absurd barbershop of “Grind”, and closed out a well considered and appropriately high energy show with “First
Tube”. Though for the first time in the band’s history they and many in the room would be returning the following
night for another show, this set felt like the exclamation point it was meant to be — to a remarkable year for a band
whose diverse history is already marked with many.

quotes. Before midnight, several groups of multiethnic dancers appeared on stage and sang the Meatstick lyrics in
their respective languages. The band joined the dancers and then stealthily disappeared from the stage, only to
reappear at the other side of the arena in the giant hotdog from past NYE shows (’94 and ’99). As a result, portions
of the Meatstick were pre-recorded. Appropriately, the post-show music was Captain Beefheart’s Tropical Hot Dog
Night.

Phish :: 10.29.10-10.31.10 :: Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall :: Atlantic City, NJ

Pop over here to see the full gallery of pictures from the Halloween run!

Like a whirlwind of ocean and sand, the tidal wave that is Phish 3.0 stormed into Atlantic City for a Halloween weekend to close their fall tour. Halloween runs are always an event for the band and its minions; this would be no different as the boys gave new definition to “Boardwalk Empire.” Phans descended on the nearly century old Jersey Shore landmark, funneling a much needed boost to the off-season economy of this blue-collar destination while also taking full advantage of its 24 hour playground. The hotels, casinos and nightclubs were crawling at all hours with revelers, costumed and imbibed like only we do.

An elated, palpable excitement permeated the salty ocean air as people filed in for the first gig. Though a sea of heads clogged the boardwalk outside the venue all three nights, the stately hall slowly filled as tickets were hard to even give away Friday. Yet once the band lined up for a barbershop quartet “Star Spangled Banner,” everything was set in place for an blockbuster weekend.

The first set of music started out innocently enough, brevity and excitability contained within spirited takes. “Light Up or Leave Me Alone” shifted gears quickly, a sonic foreshadowing of treats to come, Page’s gleeful verses and choice Fender Rhodes Winwood-isms sparking the twilight. The second portion of the first frame sought to harness the frenetic energy within the room. “Timber Ho,” “Axilla” and “Rift” saw Trey Anastasio charging with fierce Languedoc tones, leading the tightly wound troupe into proper funk. “The Moma Dance > Cities > 46 Days” only served to up the ante, low-rider, uptempo cow-funk giving way to raging arena rock bombast, a collective effort in spades. The first set displayed command of some of their dramatic yet cohesive amalgams of style and substance.

Friday’s second set saw more sonic diversity, showcased by the devastating “Sand > Carini.” If the stutter-step crunk of 3.0′s “Sand” is criminology, then this is Exhibit A. The intoxicating dance riddims and sensual aural layers detonated an aggressive, steppin’ groove. Trey juxtaposed a forceful metallic vengeance – a “Carini” segue wrought with rampant redhead riffage as Cactus digi-bombs bludgeoned and shared descending insanity culminating in a clav-drenched milieu.

To steer into port, the boys demonstrated distinct intent with a masterful tandem of “Slave” and “Fluffhead.” The former was a beacon of 3.0 reinvention, blissed-out and ethereal in flight, its emotional command tangible. “Fluffhead” was a love letter from the boys, signed, sealed and deliberate, as was the atypically tipsy “Loving Cup” that kissed us off into the windswept midnight Jersey shore.

Friday Setlist
Set 1: The Star Spangled Banner, My Soul, AC/DC Bag, Ocelot, Sample in a Jar, Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, Sugar Shack, Timber (Jerry) > Bouncing Around the Room, Axilla > Rift, The Moma Dance > Cities > 46 Days
Set 2: Punch You In the Eye > Sand -> Carini > Prince Caspian, Corinna, Piper > Theme From the Bottom > Golgi Apparatus > Slave to the Traffic Light > Fluffhead

Despite the typically great opening night, nobody could have dreamt the magic of the penultimate show Saturday night. After a soundcheck filled with their songs and a heavy-traction rumor that picked up steam, “Zeppelin” was on the tips of many tongues. On this marvelous evening, Boardwalk Hall would be adrift, a Mischief Night passage to a haunted house of the holy.

The punked-up bluster of “Cavern” announced an early fever, a tightly wound “Guelah Papyrus” scorched with concision. As the band careened skyward during “Chalkdust’s” fierce jam, Trey and Mike hijacked the vehicle with a potent “Whole Lotta Love” riff and the boys initiated a weighty liftoff. The ‘trick’ was unveiled with this vigorous verse, only this was a mission not a small time thing. A crunk detour in “Ha Ha Ha” and an anthemic “Walk Away” marched to an uber-funky ‘Wolfman’s.” Toward the end of this boogie hustle, a peculiar vocal jam began bleeding into focused, mathematical cyber-funk sonic malevolence. This wicked display piloted into a phenomenal take on “Undermind.” With such first class Phish on display throughout the first frame, unmitigated bliss permeated the setbreak, and it seemed the band was keen to treat fans maybe not blessed with a Halloween ticket to their own magic carpet ride on this chilly Saturday night.

A second frame opening “Tube” was a proper funk workout, a lesson in premeditated groove science, but it was the open-ended “Tweezer” that set the room ablaze with an endless spate of getting the Led out. Portions of “Heartbreaker,” “Ramble On” and the exquisite “Thank You” were all stuffed inside the Zepplified “Tweezer,” only to cap the madness with an emotive rendering of “Stairway to Heaven’s” final coda, complete with Robert Plant-ish crooning and proper Jimmy Page-like wailing.

Lighting director Chris Kuroda was locked and loaded in furthering this mission, and per usual his accompaniment was indescribable visual delight. Phish fulfilled the Zeppelin rumor by bringing it to fruition – Halloween delivered early-style with gusto. The room was still reeling as “2001″ announced more funk ferocity, the band one nation under a groove, a collective in the zone, rolling into a magnificent “Bowie.” In suitable fashion, the evasive “Sleeping Monkey” settled back down to earth, with a colossal “Tweeprise” the exclamation point on a ridiculous penultimate journey.

Saturday Setlist
Set 1: Kill Devil Falls, Cavern > Foam, Guelah Papyrus, Chalk Dust Torture > Whole Lotta Love > Chalk Dust Torture, Ha Ha Ha, Walk Away, Wolfman’s Brother > Undermind > Bathtub Gin, The Squirming Coil
Set 2: Tube > Possum > Tweezer > Heartbreaker > Ramble On > Thank You -> Tweezer > Stairway to Heaven, Halley’s Comet > Also Sprach Zarathustra > David Bowie, Show of Life, Backwards Down the Number Line > Good Times Bad Times

After arriving and receiving the welcome news (via the PhishBill) that the musical costume was Little Feat’s 1978 live album Waiting for Columbus, the anticipation was bountiful. Boardwalk Hall was levitating as, appropriately, Page McConnell’s keytar-led “Frankenstein” ushered in the final excursion. Halloween had arrived and the natives were restless. Costumes were plentiful and more than creative, the sold-out AC massive quaking in its boots. After the astonishing Saturday show, the bar was more than raised for the last gig of the tour. An early and snaking “Ghost” traversed slowed-funk riddims as Trey unveiled “Spooky” to fit the premise. “Divided Sky,” “Roses are Free” and “Boogie On Reggae Woman” also brought the goods. This particular trifecta was intricately woven, disparate in design yet similarly methodical – wide-ranging, cohesive jamming, all strikingly diverse intentions extremely well executed. Surprisingly, it was the dark, foreboding jam tucked within “Stash” that not only illuminated the night’s haunted aura, but most defined the limitless potential of a reinvigorated foursome.

I would like to add to the chorus of applause for this musical costume. Little Feat’s seminal double live record, recorded in London and Washington D.C. in 1977 was a perfect marriage of styles, song craft and spirit for Phish to tackle. Augmented by a five-piece horn section consisting of Aaron Johnson, Stuart Bogie, Ian Hendrickson, Michael Leonhart and Eric Biondo for several tunes, the band was ably assisted by Giovanni Hidalgo on percussion for nearly the entire set. From the opening “Fat Man in a Bathtub,” the vibe peaked with a strong, emotional expedition through this great record. Highlights speckled the whole frame, and included the Cajun-fonky “Oh Atlanta” and the familiar “Time Loves a Hero” and “Dixie Chicken”.

However the strongest for this writer was the excruciatingly dirty swank of “Spanish Moon.” Fish carried a drunken funk swagger while Hidalgo mixed it up in the space between as Gordon laid down merciless grooves, half steppin’ along as they let the horns blow. Later, “Willin’” simply wowed; masterfully introduced by Mike Gordon’s sublime piano and expressively crooned by Fishman in full frontman mode. The band in full even took a victory lap around the arena wearing shit-eating grins. From start to finish Waiting for Columbus was an absolutely ideal collection of songs and jams that was expertly executed by Phish with extraordinary accompaniment.

Photo by Dave Vann © Phish 2010

The final set of tour was a celebration of sorts, a fantastic voyage through the Phish songbook. A restarted “Disease” settled into a jovial “Jiboo” that saw climatic band interplay achieve a galloping pace. Beginning with the swagger-funk of “Camel Walk,” bubonic Gordon bombs crunched Red’s descending riffage with authority, culminating in a sinister, grinding “Wilson” metal jam that pulverized the venue to the core, Trey’s leads channeling the ghosts of Hendrix and Stevie Ray. “Hood” and “Silent” offered introspection and an emotive dalliance, and “YEM” was what Phish is in its essence – a passionate, joy-fueled romance between a band and its audience.

The “Julius” encore was icing, with the full complement of horns and Hidalgo returning for a feisty rollicking sendoff that may have been the finest rendition this writer has heard.

There were few walking out of the venue not completely blown away by this incredible three-day Phish display. Even the most jaded tour veterans were nearly speechless, delighted, cheesy grins abounded as full-blown dance parties ignited at the bars and casinos that dotted the boardwalk. Magic was in the salty ocean air as people traded superlatives to describe their own takes on the “Zeppelin trick” or “Little Feat treat.” Nights, weekends and tours like this solidify the arrival of a new era for this band. The comeback sun has set, and as hoped, IT happened – once again.

Sunday Setlist
Set 1: Frankenstein, Big Black Furry Creature from Mars, Ghost > Spooky > The Divided Sky, Roses Are Free > Funky Bitch, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Stash, Character Zero

Set 3: Down with Disease > Back on the Train > Gotta Jibboo > Camel Walk, Suzy Greenberg > Wilson > Harry Hood > The Horse > Silent in the Morning > You Enjoy Myself

Notes: During I Didn’t Know, Trey mentioned his prediction from the 6/7/09 Camden show that the Flyers would

in the audience then began chanting “Let’s Go Flyers.” Reba did not have the whistling ending. The Rover was a
Phish debut. At the start of the YEM vocal jam, some fans again chanted “Let’s Go Flyers.”

In what is becoming a Father’s Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band
members’ children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing
everyone a Happy Father’s Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. The end
of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised lines that
set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa
(“Mike,” “Policeman” “SPAC” and “House” among others).

Phish | 12.02.09 | MSG Night 1

Words by: Brian Bavosa | Images by: Dino Perrucci

Phish :: 12.02.09 :: Madison Square Garden :: New York, NY

Phish :: 12.02 :: MSG

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to Mecca. Magical Square Garden. Simply put, it’s the greatest arena in the world – for anything. Compound that with the fact that December 2, 2009 represented Phish‘s 26th anniversary together as a band, the palpable energy for their first show at Madison Square Garden in seven years (and second since ’98) was unmatched even before the band hit the stage.

Kicking off the only three-night stand of the fall tour with an old-school, fire blazing combo of “AC/DC Bag” and “Chalkdust Torture,” it was apparent that the band was glad to be back at the indoor arena that has arguably witnessed the most magic of their legendary career. Two tunes that can sometimes go through the motions, they simply rocked. Early on, Trey spoke about the ’97 holiday shows, and how during certain grooves, the floor at the Garden actually bounces. I’ve experienced it during several second sets here since ’94, and during “Chalkdust” I felt the first “bounce” of the night.

A super funky “Wolfman’s Brother” showcased Page McConnell‘s skills (a recurring theme on night one), while Anastasio crushed the ascending riffs. The only new tune in set one was the bubbly “Ocelot,” another sign that pointed to big things on the horizon. But, clearly, clearly, clearly, the bust out of the night, the tour, and maybe ’09 was the late set cover of Frank Zappa’s “Peaches en Regalia.” Only the 39th time it’s ever been played in over 20 years, and the first one since 9.24.99, the excitement of older fans who knew the significance of this tune as it started up was apparent around the venue (just check the video below). It was one of those moments that validated the time and money for those who travel and devote their lives to this band, making it all seem worthwhile. It was also executed to perfection, as was the majority of the first set. “The Divided Sky” saw the crowd going bonkers during the middle pause section, and a perfect “Cavern” closer topped off a powerful first set back at MSG.

Trey :: 12.02 :: MSG

But as solid as set one was, set two was simply packed with some of the biggest tunes in the catalogue, including some serious jamming – which Phish 3.0 has lacked for the most part – and a relentless onslaught that felt like an all-out pile-on. “Golgi Apparatus” was a nice springboard to “Light,” which has clearly emerged at the biggest jam vehicle off 2009′s Joy. “Light” is vintage Phish. It allows the band to slowly and comfortably stretch out, while Chris Kuroda shines his own lights over the masses, before ultimately peaking in a soaring crescendo where one envision the crowd exploding in a cannon shot of colorful confetti. For those that say this song is overplayed, I disagree, simply because it opens so many doors and allows limitless possibilities for exploration.

“Light” landed in a welcome mid-set “Slave to the Traffic Light,” which saw the gentle thunder of Phish at its finest envelope the Garden before Thor’s almighty hammer slammed down in the form of “Tweezer.” Both dark and funky, this version was raucous and had the crowd going bananas – a true night one highlight, especially coming off “Slave.”

After a brief breather in “Joy” and the infectious, breakneck “Sparkle,” the band kept pouring it on with the opening notes to “Harry Hood.” One of the band’s oldest songs, you could see the masses simply kick back as we basked in the glory that is Phish – for 26 years and counting! This one was patient and sublime, exactly how it is meant to be.

By the time the band smashed into “Suzy Greenburg,” one of 3.0′s strongest tunes, McConnell was all over both his Clav and baby grand and the four-headed monster was firing on all cylinders. In a word, scorching. The icing on the cake was the set closing “Run Like an Antelope,” solidifying an outstanding setlist. But it was more than just the songs. It was the stellar way they were played, not to mention Trey was so lively and animated all night, it was clearly a great sign of things to come for the remaining nights of Phish’s triumphant return to MSG.

An encore of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” was another treat, followed by one of the most raging five-minute songs ever written, by any band, ever: “Tweezer Reprise.” Trey destroyed it, Fishman hit the kit with a thunderous force, and Gordon – who was also very, very prominent this night, especially in set two – was locked in.

All in all, a frickin’ super first night at the legendary venue, which ranks as one of the Top 3, if not THE number one show I’ve seen since the return. Stay tuned for Night 2…

Phish Festival 8 :: 11.01.09 :: Indio, CA

SEIS

Phish Festival 8 :: 11.01 :: Indio, CA

The final day of Festival 8 brought out some firsts for the band. Beginning a bit after noon on Sunday, Phish settled into a stripped down arrangement for their first ever, full-length acoustic set.

The set opened with a few numbers fans were expecting to hear, like “Water in the Sky” and “Get Back on the Train,” a fluttering “Strange Design,” as well as a few more daring tunes for an acoustic setting, such as “The Curtain With.”

With the blistering sun again beating down upon patrons, Trey told the audience to sit down at the beginning of the set, something he later explained he’d never be able to do because he can’t take orders, which led to the frontman jumping out of his seat for “Wilson.”

The acoustic early afternoon set proved to be the perfect scenario after the musical chaos and relentless ass-kicking of Halloween. It provided the opportunity to sprawl out in the lush, green grass of the concert field and float away to the simple melodies of “Bouncin’ Around the Room” and “McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters.” The acoustic version of “McGrupp” was clearly a highlight that allowed fans to appreciate what a wonderful composition the song is, shinning in this unique setting.

The tripe encore of “Driver,” “Talk,” a song that really flourished with Trey on acoustic, and “Secret Smile” closed things out. The acoustic portion of Sunday truly captured the laidback, SoCal vibe of Festival 8 in a nutshell.

SIETE

Phish Festival 8 :: 11.01 :: Indio, CA

After the Packers/Vikings and World Series games that saw the masses huddle around giant screens, sprawl out on couches and picnic tables, and imbibe heavily at the Bloody Mary bar, Phish hit the stage for their seventh set of the weekend just before 6 p.m., shortly after the sun had set and the temperature dropped.

Opening with the upbeat, fan favorite, “AC/DC Bag,” Phish was back in familiar territory – electric, where let’s face it: this band belongs. “Bag” was cut a bit short, Trey pulling out of the jam and instead segueing into “Rift.” A welcome choice, but a bit puzzling since they had played “The Curtain With” earlier, and both songs contain a very similar composed section.

“Gotta Jibboo” got the crowd gyrating; before the set seemed to sort of fall apart. The set wasn’t bad, but seemed disjointed at times, and the band simply looked tired. This point was further driven home with some major flubs in “Reba” and “Guelah Papyrus.” But, it didn’t matter. There were no haters around and everyone continued to move along, including the band who did manage to end the set on a high note with a Fishman-led, super tight and funky “Undermind,” and a mostly razor sharp set closer of “Split Open and Melt.” A set that will get lost in the mix of the weekend, it did have a few choice moments buy lacked cohesiveness overall.

Phish Festival 8 :: 11.01 :: Indio, CA

We made it: the eighth and final set of the weekend! Clocking in at around two hours, the set started off good, but eventually turned great. An infectious, danceable “Tweezer” kicked things off and found Gordon dropping bombs of thunder that felt like they might pull rain from the desert sky above.

A panic-attack inducing “Maze” swirled with McConnell‘s organ and Anastasio’s piercing licks, before things morphed into “Free.” A bombastic version of one of the band’s most beloved jams, “Free” turned the sea of people into one glowing mass of smiles, many with eyes closed and arms raised over head.

Clearly feeding off the crowd’s energy, the band moved into the new Gordon track “Sugar Shack,” featuring funky, calypso rhythms and Gordon’s quirky vocals. Things were gaining speed and truly hit a stride during a triumphant “Limb by Limb” and a very well played “Theme From the Bottom” that soared high with the song’s classic, ethereal jam.

Many fans felt the best set of the weekend was the eighth and final offering. Well executed and perfectly balanced, we were treated to soaring highs, funky dance numbers, and dark, chaotic, dissonant weirdness like that found in the massive “Mike’s Song.” Drifting out of “Mike’s,” “2001″ lit a party keg under an already amped-up crowd that busted their best dance moves during the legendary space-funk. With the band pumping the beats, lighting director Chris Kuroda brought “2001″ to new heights with rainbow patterns and backlit palm trees behind the stage. Known by phans as CK5, Kuroda just might be the best light guru in the game.

Phish Festival 8 :: 11.01 :: Indio, CA

From the darkness emerged “Light,” which featured a very weird, atypical, almost Type-II jam, with a “Burble” twin off to the side of the crowd. At times the “Burble” looked like a guitar, then a piano, and finally a hand playing or waving.

After exploring “Light,” Phish laid a delicate, raw lining over the masses with the majestic “Slave to the Traffic Light.” One of be best show closers in the band’s repertoire, it summed up the weekend: amazing, beautiful, dangerous at times, but clearly worth the journey.

An extended encore of “Grind,” a very unexpected “Esther,” which was performed flawlessly with McConnell’s circus style organ capturing the festy vibe in a snapshot. In a subtle way, “Esther” also signaled that Festival 8 had come full circle. Back at the band’s first festival, 1996′s Clifford Ball, “Esther” was played early on, but had not made an appearance at any of the following festivals.

A bunch of thank yous to Red Light, Goldenvoice and Phish peeps in general, Trey said they hoped to do it again, emitting a universal cheer. The icing on the donut was a raging “Tweezer Reprise” in which the stations at the back of the crowd erupted a few final times with huge bursts of flames.

Festival 8 was a triumphant success and a welcome return to the festival atmosphere for Phish. Exile was nailed, some of the best jamming in years, and a relaxed vibe made Coventry seem like a distant memory. A true epiphany for all in attendance, and from what showed onstage, the band as well.

Phish | 08.01 | Red Rocks Day 3

Words by: Brian Bavosa | Images by: Dave Vann

Phish :: 08.01.09 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Gordo – Phish :: 08.01 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

For as long as I’ve been seeing Phish -1 6 years and counting – the third night of a four night run has always been, well, wild, special and more often than not, THE night. Night three of Red Rocks was certainly a worthy contender in this tradition.

Opening with “AC/DC Bag,” the fire-fueled, Gamehendge rocker, it was on from note one. The line, “Let’s get this show on the road!,” is always a surefire way to let the masses know the band means business, and set one was my favorite of the three firsts opening sets thus far, on paper and in execution. Speaking of execution, the second tune, “The Curtain With,” was the first reading since the now infamous encore at Coventry, which Trey screwed up something awful. Tonight was flawlessly executed to perfection. The band really appeared to take their time in practicing and making sure they played this one right, and this take gave a flying “Fuck You” salute to Coventry and the bad memories it has held since ’04. Good riddance.

And then the band launched into the drum-lead “Mound,” a bust out not played since the last “return” show at MSG on New Year’s Eve ’02. Always a fan favorite, this too, is a difficult composition to pull off, and the band crushed it. All four members were in sync from the jump tonight, something that carried over to the crowd inside (and the few hundred who climbed the mountain behind the venue).

“Gotta Jibboo” was as fun and danceable as ever, while “Guyute” served as the composition song in set one. “Punch You in the Eye” – a song the band hasn’t had the easiest time with this summer – was exceptionally locked-in, and Trey led throughout; he was very sharp and spirited this evening, particularly in set two. “Tube” was the first set highlight, and was super-duper tight and funky, featuring McConnell on the Clav/synth who was simply laying it down. “Alaska” was reworked and featured a triple repeat of the opening line. It was loose and took on a bluesy, stripped-down feel. Another big gun, “Run Like an Antelope,” closed set one and was not as razor sharp as normal, but rather dark, twisted and weird. Overall, a great first set with some major treats.

Phish :: 08.01 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Unlike the previous night’s (read about it here) rain-soaked set break, Saturday felt quick and saw Anastasio and company land in The Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll.” It lived up to its name for sure and eventually devolved into a spacey breakdown that found Trey looping effects and Gordon smothering pedals before dropping the intro bombs of “Down With Disease.” A song that took on real character in Leg One of the tour, this night’s “DWD” was shorter and more out there than usual, but still interesting.

The hammer was then dropped into “Free,” which with the exception of the big five or so, is, in my opinion, the quintessential, ultimate Phish song. Lyrically, musically and emotionally, “Free” represents all things good about Phish and why we continue to traverse the country to see them. It allows one to get lost and fly “freely” across a slamming anthem. But, the highlight of Red Rocks thus far, in my mind and in terms of sheer balls, was the first “Esther” since Vegas ’00, and my personal first since The Clifford Ball in ’96, ironically enough the same tour Phish last played Red Rocks. What most impressed me about this rendition was that Trey hit every single lyric. Not a flub to be found. It was also in these moments that I truly managed to lose myself and my ego, drift off to the sublime spaces that only Phish generates and truly believe in my heart of hearts that PHISH is the greatest band of our generation. While most of Phish 3.0 has been “safe,” the gall it takes to play “Mound” and “Esther” leads me to believe that there are still hints of greatness left in the Phab Phour.

Trey & Gordo – Phish :: 08.01 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

“Dirt” served as the breather song of the second set, but was more upbeat and Trey-charged than usual, with him adding some extra spice, so much so that the set-closing “Harry Hood” featured a “Dirt” guitar lick tease by Trey in the intro section. If I ever had to choose a place to “live beneath the dirt,” Red Rocks would be at the top of the list. “Hood” is also a perfect song for Red Rocks, with Chris Kuroda‘s lights resonating off of the giant red slabs to either side of the venue while the city lights of Denver glistened silently in the background. In a word, it was majestic. While the second set seemed short tonight, it still featured some big guns and a MAJOR bust out.

An encore of “Sleeping Monkey” was a semi-gospel prayer (with organ worship hands flying high) with a Beatles “Let It Be” tease by Page. The night was capped off by “First Tube,” which was super high energy and saw Trey jumping all over the place, literally and musically. Not only has Phish delivered three monstrous efforts in a row but the tour is just heating up. All signs for Sunday point to a narration, a huge “You Enjoy Myself” and a deep “2001″ to help us wrap up Red Rocks. Night four still has some huge tunes in store, but also some final surprises I’m sure.

Lastly, Happy Birthday, Jerry. Without you, Phish wouldn’t be what they are today.

Dig in, night four is descending upon us…
