Islam and demography: A waxing crescent

Islam is growing. But ageing and slowing. That will change the world

ARE Muslims taking over the world, or at a minimum, transforming Europe into Eurabia? Whatever your hopes or fears for the future of the world’s religions, a report published this week has plenty to stoke them. “The Future of the Global Muslim Population”, produced by the Pew Research Centre, a non-profit outfit based in Washington, DC, reckons Muslim numbers will soar from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030. In other words, from 23.4% to 26.4% of the global total.

At the heart of its analysis is the ongoing effect of a “youth bulge” which peaked in 2000. In 1990 Islam’s share of the world’s youth was 20%; in 2010, 26%. In 2030 it will be 29% (of 15-to-29-year-olds). But the Muslim world is slowly heading towards paunchiness: the median age in Muslim-majority countries was 19 in 1990. It is 24 now, and will be 30 by 2030. (For French, Germans and Japanese the figure is 40 or over.) This suggests Muslim numbers will ultimately stop climbing, but later than the rest of the world population. …

Kid Congo Powers: New Album & East Coast Dates

SPRING RELEASE FOR GORILLA ROSE; TOUR STARTS FEB. 11

The legendary Kid Congo
Powers
, co-founder of the Gun Club, guitarist for The Cramps and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, will be
releasing his new album with his group Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds this spring. Titled
Gorilla Rose, the album follows in the footsteps of the band’s 2009 Dracula Boots with
more ram-charged boogaloo, sleazy psychedelia and Chicano garage rock.

In The Red records is gearing up for
the new album by releasing a series of oddball limited edition vinyl-only records by the band. The first of these
releases dropped this week in the form of the “Five Greasy Pieces” subscription series. This is a very limited edition
(250 of each) series of five different singles each containing two brand new tracks. Starting in January In The Red
will be issuing one of these a month. The fifth and final single in the series will come with a handsome box in which
all five will be housed. The only way to obtain these singles is to buy a subscription on the In The Red website. In
March In The Red will be issuing a live LP by the band titled Live At The Prom which will be

Chris Cornell Announces Solo Acoustic “Songbook” Tour

TOUR BEGINS APRIL 1, 2011 IN AUSTIN, TX

This Spring, Chris Cornell
will embark on his first-ever solo acoustic “Songbook” tour. Running from April through May 2011, it will spotlight
songs from throughout his career, as well as a few surprise covers.

Back in December 2009, Cornell played his first acoustic “Songbook” show in Los Angeles at the Hotel Cafe to
overwhelming response – the show sold out instantly. A second performance soon followed at the city’s famous
Troubadour. Now, live audiences across the US & Canada will also have the chance to see Chris perform unplugged,
up close and personal – an event many fans have been eagerly anticipating for years. Within this alternative setting,
Cornell can easily interact with the audience and share insights about his music. Familiar songs emerge in a new
context, showing that great songwriting translates to any idiom.

Keep looking for audio, visual and live updates on the
