Indoor pollution: Silent and deadly

Smoke from cooking stoves kills poor people

AFTER vaccines and bed nets, could the humble cooking stove be the next big idea to save millions of lives in poor countries? Hillary Clinton, America’s secretary of state, hopes so. She was marking the launch on September 21st of a new alliance that aims to raise $250m to supply clean stoves to 100m poor households by 2020. It is headed by the United Nations Foundation, a charity. Among its backers are governments (chiefly America, which has put up an initial $50m), charities (the Shell Foundation) and private firms (Morgan Stanley, an investment bank).

Around two billion people have no access to modern energy, and a billion have it only sporadically. The smoky stoves that many of them use, the World Health Organisation reckons, produce particulate pollution that causes around 2m premature deaths a year. Makeshift cookers also catch fire easily, maiming and killing. And lives are not the only things wasted. Women and girls in rural villages lose time and energy walking around collecting dirty solid fuels, ranging from crop waste to cow dung (better used as fertiliser). …

Can cell phones protect us against deadly chemicals?

The “smartphones” many of us now carry have a three to five mega pixel lens, not to mention an MP3 player, GPS or even a bar code scanner. What if new functions on our cell phones can also protect us from toxic chemicals?
The US Deparment of Homeland Security’s science and technology directorate’s Cell-All is such [...]

Sectarian violence kills hundreds in Nigeria

THE number plates in Nigeria’s Plateau State declare it to be the “Home of Peace and Tourism”. This has seemed ever more optimistic in recent years, as the state capital, Jos, has been battered by brutal violence, with fresh attacks over the weekend reportedly leaving hundreds dead.

In the early hours of the morning of Sunday March 7th gangs attacked villages near Jos, according to the Red Cross. Houses were razed and many women and children killed. Locals say the gang members belonged to the mainly Muslim Fulani tribe while the villages were populated by the mostly Christian Berom group. The death toll is hard to verify, with estimates ranging from 200 to 500. …

A lethal attack casts a shadow over Africa’s biggest football tournament

A DEADLY terrorist attack on Togo’s national football team, in Angola for the Africa Cup of Nations, has left Danny Jordaan as sick as a dog. “There’s no way this can have an impact on the 2010 World Cup,” the head of South Africa’s organising committee for the event, said. But his agitation belied his fears. Just when Mr Jordaan thought the doubters about South Africa’s suitability to host the globe’s greatest sporting tournament had been silenced, new questions are being raised.

The Togolese footballers were ambushed by a dozen heavily armed separatist guerrillas as they travelled by bus from Congo-Brazzaville, where they had been training, to the neighbouring oil-rich Angolan province of Cabinda two days before the tournament, hosted by Angola, kicked off on Sunday January 10th. Three people—the team’s assistant coach, their spokesman and their Angolan driver—were killed. Another nine members of Togo’s party were wounded including Togo’s reserve goalkeeper. He was airlifted to a hospital in Johannesburg after being shot in the back. His condition is said to be stable. …
