Hackers hit Twitter and Facebook

Micro-blogging service Twitter has been taken offline in what the company believes is a co-ordinated attack.
The popular site has been subject to a so-called denial-of-service attack, according to the company’s status blog.
Denial-of-service attacks take various forms but often involve a company’s servers being flooded with data in an effort to disable them.
It is not yet clear when the outage began or whether the service has suffered a global blackout.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone confirmed in his blog that the social media site had been hit by a denial-of-service attack that knocked it offline for nearly two hours during the morning of Aug. 6. There were also online reports that Facebook was hit by a denial of service attack. However, Facebook officials would only say the company was investigating the reports and would update users as soon as possible. Both sites appeared to be operating normally by around noon EDT.
