Jerry Joseph & Wally Ingram :: 12.12.10 :: The State Room :: Salt Lake City, UT

Jerry Joseph by Phil Santala |
What ever you do, don’t call it a comeback or anything new. Jerry Joseph has been absolutely on fire the last few years. Not matter who he is touring with – the Jackmormons, Denmark Veseys, Stockholm Syndrome, or just with percussionist Wally Ingram – his shows, as of late, almost never cease to amaze me. The State Room show in Utah was no exception.
Bold words considering this summer saw me walking away from three nights in Virginia City, MT at Bandito’s shaking my head in wonderment. That run itself just gets better and betterÂ…but enough about the past. We gathered in Salt Lake City, one of Jerry’s former residencies, to partake in some pre-holidays shenanigans, Jerry Joseph Style.
Jerry came out, hulking onto the stage in big heavy boots. Some in the crowd responded by shouting, “Show us your feet!” It was clear that those in attendance were not just casual fans. The core had turned out for this event, and the duo did not disappoint. Jerry seemed to be in high spirits, joking to the crowd before “Wisconsin Death Trip” that, “Wally and I, when I was a kid, we used to sing this around the Christmas tree at Wally’s house, eating Christmas koogle.” Jerry also jested after the Vic Chestnutt song “Flirted With You All My Life” that the song was about “holidays and good times. You feeling any better?” Vic, he said, “fucking nailed it” with that song. The Christmas spirit was certainly making Jerry’s heart grow three times its size that day.
Local Jackmormons bassist JR Ruppel joined Jerry and Wally for much of the second half of the set. The encore, which was especially moving and heartfelt, found Joseph stepping out from the mike to shout and sing directly to the crowd: “Ring ‘em up, tell ‘em that you love ‘em. CALL THEM NOW AND TELL THEM THAT YOU LOVE THEM!” It was a plea, a call, a cry of passion. Hold on, hold onto those around you, those you care for, those you hurt and neglect through your selfishness, those that never left you in the dark on your own no matter how you tried to push them away and no matter how many times your vices came between you and them. Ring ‘em up, and tell them Jerry Joseph said hi. Better yet, why don’t you all come out to the next Jerry Joseph show and see what the buzz is really all about?

Nuclear power: Team France in disarray
Unhappy attempts to revive a national industry
WHAT solar panels are to Germany and wind turbines are to Denmark, nuclear reactors are to France: not just a power source but a pitch for global leadership in a field that is green and sexily high-tech. Electricite de France (EDF), a giant state utility, runs all 59 of the country’s nuclear plants and more than anyone else in the world. Together with Areva and Alstom, two firms involved in many aspects of nuclear-power production, EDF is trying to compete for business overseas. But Team France is ailing.
Its main product is the European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR), vaunted as the most sophisticated, plane-crash-proof and efficient in the world. But just two are under construction, and only one is being built outside France. An EPR in Finland has been dogged by quality and regulatory problems, causing cost overruns of about €2.7 billion ($3.5 billion). The fiasco led Siemens of Germany to end a joint venture with Areva, the lead contractor, reducing the chances of Franco-German co-operation on further EPRs. …

World Music Expo: Womex 2010
OCTOBER 27-31 IN COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
It’s an all-day, all-night dance and listening party, where old hands and grand dames share space with wild
newcomers. It’s a business platform where people from remote villages and well-heeled megalopolises meet and
discuss how to sustain musical diversity. It’s the best place to launch a successful career, whether you’re a striking
traditional singer from Afghanistan or the best rock guitarist in Zanzibar.
It’s WOMEX, the world’s premier world music expo
and music event (October 27-31, 2010 in Copenhagen,
Denmark). This year, in addition to hearing sounds from across the planet, participants will get a chance to build
new approaches to “world music,” a term coined at the end of the eighties in the UK to help market music from
outside the Western world, now about creating musical infrastructure to support artists and audiences everywhere.
WOMEX has brought Saharan desert rockers Tinariwen, Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora, Brazilian bohemian Seu Jorge, and countless others to global stardom. This year’s showcase festival highlights
everyone from La Reunion’s soulful Creole blues poet Danyèl Waro to the hip electro-cumbia of Colombia’s
Bomba Estereo and the hard-core Bavarian brass of LaBrassBanda. Virtuoso hurdy-gurdy from
Austria (Matthias Loibner) may follow 10,000-year-old Chinese jew’s harp tunes (Wang Li) and
the resonant funk of the Senegalese hoddu (Malick Pathe Sow & Maoba). Anything goes—as long as it
excels.
“The jury always tries to put together a program that is broad in styles and traditions,
that reflects electronic and acoustic approaches,” WOMEX Director of Music Programming Alexander
Walter notes. “We keep an eye on having bigger and smaller bands. Only by being this open and diverse can
cover the radically different interests and tastes of the delegates that come to the event.”
Valuing education: Critical thinking
Where do graduates end up doing unskilled work? And earning most?
ACADEMIC qualifications’ value in the workplace is a big issue for students, policymakers and taxpayers, especially as the rising numbers of students in higher education make them less distinctive. In the latest annual report on education by the OECD, a rich-country think-tank, the answer is clear: the pay-off from tertiary education is still good, both for the individual and the economy. Most graduates take jobs fitting their qualifications, earn more than non-graduates, and thus tend to pay more in taxes.
The workforce is smartening up. In the OECD 35% of the 25- to 34-year-old workforce has completed tertiary education, compared with 20% of the cohort approaching retirement. Countries such as Japan and South Korea have invested so heavily in educating their young that more than half now hold post-school qualifications. Norway, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands are close behind. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD’s chief of education research, reckons that these countries may well become more competitive as a result. …

Quality of death
A ranking of care for the dying by country
CUSTOMER-satisfaction surveys are, alas, unsuitable for rating the quality of death. So the Economist Intelligence Unit, a sister group to The Economist, has devised a ranking of end-of-life care, published on Wednesday July 14th. It rates 40 mostly rich countries by how well they care for the dying. Britain tops the table. For all the health care system’s faults, British doctors tend to be honest about prognoses, the mortally ill get plentiful pain killers and a well-established hospice movement cares for people near death. Countries such as Denmark and Finland rank lower because they concentrate more on preventing death than on helping people die without suffering pain, discomfort and distress.
