“Serbia could be candidate by end of year”

Serbia could become candidate for EU membership by the end of this year, says Deputy PM Božidar Đelić. This could happen if the EU questionnaire is sent by the spring, and filled out by the summer, he told Belgrade daily Večernje Novosti.

“Serbia’s goal is to attract USD 3bn”

Deputy PM Božidar Đelić stated on Thursday that Serbia’s aim was to attract USD 3bn of direct foreign investments in 2010. Đelić is in Paris where he s attending a two-day conference in Paris entitled “New world, new capitalism”.

“Europe for All” travelers arrive in Rome

Serbia “respects Macedonia’s name”

Serbian Deputy PM Božidar Đelić said in Skopje on Friday that Belgrade recognizes Macedonia under its constitutional name. Greece has for almost two decades contested the former Yugoslav republic’s right to use the name “the Republic of Macedonia”.

Đelić, IMF officials discuss public finances

Deputy PM Božidar Đelić met on Wednesday in Belgrade with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation led by Albert Jaeger. Their joint conclusion from the meeting said that, besides the importance of reaching agreement on the 2010 budget, it was also important for Serbia that its reforms provide long-term sustainability of public finances well after the stand-by arrangement with the IMF expired in May 2011.

“EU bid doesn’t diminish Russia’s importance”

Deputy PM Božidar Đelić said that the process of Serbia’s European integration does not disregard or diminish the importance of cooperation with Russia. “Serbia joining the EU will certainly increase the interest of Russian and European companies for investments in Serbia,” Đelić said at a meeting of a Serbo-Russian business forum.

Đelić: SAA to be unblocked in December?

The first realistic date when the SAA could be unblocked is at the EU summit in December after Serge Brammertz’s next report, says Deputy PM Božidar Đelić.

He told daily Blic that the only safe road towards unblocking the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) and receiving candidate status was Ratko Mladić’s extradition, but that it could also be achieved through “full cooperation with the Hague.”

EU in EUR 100mn boost for Serbian budget

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Deputy PM Božidar Đelić have signed a financial agreement in Brussels giving Serbia’s budget EUR 100mn in IPA funds. “I’m sure that it will be seen as an boon to continue legislative and economic reform in the country,“ said Rehn.

Đelić: VAT increase in worst-case scenario

Talks are under way on hammering out a budget that will be proposed to the IMF in negotiations on altering the loan arrangement, says Deputy PM Božidar Đelić.
“Serbia has three ways to control public finances. The first and most desirable is to cut public spending further, with the goal of covering current spending with lesser current income, and using the entire budget deficit for investments in infrastructure,” Đelić told €konomist magazine.

Serbia, German state sign protocol

Deputy PM Božidar Đelić on Friday in Belgrade signed a cooperation protocol with Baden-Wurttemberg officials. The protocol, concerning security, fight against organized crime and corruption, EU Danube strategy, economy, education, tourism, culture and science, was signed by Đelić and the German federal state’s Minister of State Ministry and Federal and European Affairs Wolfgang Reinhart.
