It’s hard to think of another band quite like rock power trio Devi, who blend the cleverness and intricacy of a good jam band with the catchiness of vintage power pop, the awareness and relevance of punk and the occasional smirking metal flourish. Beefed up with percussionist Pat Catino plus keyboard wizard Rob Clores, Devi teased and seduced the audience with playfully executed improvisations that threatened to take their melodic rockers into unknown territory. When they finally did, the results were very satisfying.

Frontwoman Debra is one of the few guitarists alive who can actually pull off a long, expressive solo without sounding ridiculously self-indulgent. A master of touch, tone and shading, she’s a supersonic fret-burner with a deep feel for the blues who also writes hauntingly memorable songs. Clores turned her post-9/11 ballad “Welcome to the Boneyard” into an absolutely wrenching affair with a watery, otherworldly setting that gave Debra a chance to let the plaintive anguish of her vocals carry the song. The longing and ache in her voice, soaring way up into her upper register at the end of the song, was literally chilling, as the rhythm section slowly pulsed their way to the end.

Jam-wise, the hit of the evening was an extended psychedelic version of the ominous “When It Comes Down,” with guitar and drums trading off stinging accents, then building to an all-too-brief black hole of noise from which the bass emerged with a pulse to prove everyone was still alive and okay. Even on the band’s most straight-up material, gremlins of the best kind would unexpectedly show their gleeful faces – Keith Mannino‘s bass would echo Debra’s guitar or foreshadow a phrase; drummer John Hummel would pummel with a sudden double-bass ferocity straight out of the John Bonham playbook; and Debra would fly off on guitar with a casual, incisive aplomb, sometimes with a slide or in an alternate tuning, when it came time to step out or bring a crescendo home.

The night’s biggest surprise was new song, “Tompkins Square Park,” a dark, sludgy tribute to civil disobedience, one part Melvins, one part Patti Smith, with Debra trying to talk sense with a cop at a protest and being rewarded for her efforts by having to duck out of the way of a charge by a herd of mounted police.

Devi tour dates available here.

India to execute 2003 bomb trio

Indian policemen guard the bomb site in 2003

A court in India has sentenced to death three people for carrying out bombings that killed more than 50 people in Mumbai (Bombay) in 2003.

Haneef Sayyed, his wife Fahmeeda and Ashrat Ansari were convicted last month of murder and conspiracy.

The explosions at the famous Gateway of India landmark and a busy market shocked the country and caused carnage.

They were said to be in retaliation for the deaths of Muslims during riots in Gujarat state the year before.

Hundreds have been killed in attacks in Mumbai in recent years.

Devastating

"The court has given death sentence to all three," chief public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said.

"They wanted to target religious structures in the city. The responsible have been brought to book."

The double car bombing in August 2003 left devastation at the Gateway of India and the Zaveri Bazaar market near the Mumba Devi temple in central Mumbai.

About 180 people were injured.

The three defendants, all of them from Mumbai, were charged under India’s Prevention Of Terrorism Act, which has since been repealed.

Two others were accused – Mohammed Ansari and Mohammed Hasan. They were discharged after a review by the special court last year.

The three defendants were convicted of plotting the bombings in co-ordination with the Pakistan-based Islamic militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

LeT is also accused of carrying out other attacks in India in recent years, including the gun and bomb assault on Mumbai last November.

The judge said all three defendants were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which they denied.

Indian queen Gayatri Devi dies

Gayatri Devi as a guest at the Jaipur Polo Ground in 2007

One of the last queens of India, Gayatri Devi, once described as one of the most beautiful women in the world, has died at the age of 90.

She was hospitalised about 10 days ago with stomach and respiratory problems in Jaipur before dying on Wednesday.

Born in to a royal family, she became the third wife of Sawai Man Singh, the Maharajah of Jaipur, in 1939.

The fashion icon broke with tradition by winning election to parliament in 1962. She was re-elected twice.

She supported education for women, and founded a prestigious school in Jaipur, now the capital of Rajasthan state.

Gayatri Devi was born into the royal family of Cooch Behar in 1919.

In an interview with The Times of India, she recalled as a young girl going out hunting, sitting on the neck of an elephant.

Jail

She became the third Maharani of Jaipur in 1939, marrying into a lavish lifestyle.

The family, in effect, ruled the city of Jaipur and the surrounding area in the western Indian desert kingdom.

They spent the summers in Europe and educated their children at elite schools in England.

Gayatri Devi loved tennis and polo, and was a talented horse rider, while her taste in saris and jewellery, inherited from her mother, made her a glamorous fashion icon.

Vogue magazine once listed her among the "World’s Ten Most Beautiful Women".

In 1962 Gatatri Devi entered politics, founding the Swatantra party, and running against the Congress Party.

During the 1970s, the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi abolished the last royal privileges, and Gayatri Devi was jailed for five months for violating tax laws.

In later life, Gayatri Devi became known affectionately as Rajmata, or Queen Mother, still greatly admired for her natural grace and beauty.

She is survived by two grandchildren.</p
