With the crucial IMF visit only a month away, the government has yet to release precise figures on how many people in public administration will be fired. Figures quoted by the Finance Ministry, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković and Economy Minister Mlađan Dinkić do not tally, varying between 10,000 and 14,000—give or take a few thousand either way.

Dinkić sees elections in 2012
Ruling G17 Plus leader MlaÄ‘an Dinkić says he is convinced that changes to the Law on Information will be adopted and that Serbia is “very far from elections”. “It seems that we are very far from elections. I’m convinced that soon gradual recovery of the economy will start, we except big investments in the coming years, visa cancelling for travel to the EU. The worst is behind us. If the government manages the next couple of months, we will have elections in the regular slot in 2012,” he told daily VeÄenje Novosti.
Part of Serbia’s Kosovo debt written off
Economy Minister Mlađan Dinkić told B92 that the World Bank has written off USD 550mn of Serbia’s foreign debt owed for Kosovo. Dinkić stressed that this does not mean that Belgrade has recognized Kosovo’s independence.
Dinkić on favorable Chinese loans
Economy Minister MlaÄ‘an Dinkić met with China’s Eximbank president to discuss possibilities of drawing favorable loans for Serbia’s infrastructure projects. “Our friendly relations with China and the strategic partnership that President Boris Tadić signed on Thursday are a great ticket in, for Serbia’s faster economic development,” Dinkić, who is a member of the state delegation currently visiting China, said.
Minister: No tax hikes, no salary cuts
Minister of Economy MlaÄ‘an Dinkić says there will be no tax increase or lowering of salaries in Serbia, since that would be economically wrong. “If we requested a tax increase, we would additionally reduce demand, which is the main cause of recession,” he told journalists.
Dinkić “putting together new party”
G17 Plus leader MlaÄ‘an Dinkić is busy negotiating with local and regional party chiefs, in a bid to form a new party, a daily writes. VeÄernje Novosti says that the outcome of these talks is expected in September, while the founding congress is planned for November at the latest.
Dinkić visiting Banja Luka
Economy Minister Mlađan Dinkić will be in Banja Luka on Tuesday as the agreement on economic cooperation between Serbia and the RS comes into force. In a statement, the Economy and Regional Development Ministry said that during his visit, an agreement would be signed with banks on subsidizing interest rates for loans, which would be signed by Republic of Srpska (RS) Finance Minister Aleksandar Džombić and various bank directors.
