JamBase Questionnaire: Tom Hamilton

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from The Old Ceremony.

It takes an uncommonly open-minded musician to really grok the internal logic of utterly modern, untz-savvy rock and classic singer-songwriter fare, but Tom Hamilton is an uncommonly gifted cat. As the guiding light behind Brothers Past and American Babies, Hamilton shows a range of gifts – warmly charming singer, sharp songwriter, memorable guitarist, keen eared producer – seeming utterly at home in the post-Radiohead atmosphere of Brothers Past as he is plying pop-rock veins akin to Paul Simon and Wilco in the Babies. Hamilton always seems game to explore, be it in his own projects or collaborating with the likes of Younger Brother or The Disco Biscuits, all of which seems to fuel more colors and textures in each new chapter of his evolution.

A new American Babies album arrives later this year, and Brothers Past is currently experiencing a resurgence with active gigging and the monthly Everything Must Go live download series (check it out here), which just issued its fourth volume, a swinging, switched-on post-Phish gig from 2004 (available for the catering economy price of just $5 bucks!) that includes a boss cover of The Cure’s “Fascination Street” and other softly mesmerizing moments. Listen to it here.

What stands out about Hamilton’s work, wherever it crops up, is a totally engaged, often joyful engagement with the world and his craft. His music sends out tendrils into the void and what connections it makes can’t be predicted, only that new ties will be formed. (Dennis Cook)

Brothers Past plays live throughout February and March. Find full tour dates here. A special hometown show is planned for March 26 at the TLA in Philadelphia, PA.

Here’s what Tom Hamilton had to say to our inquiries.

Brothers Past by Dave Vann

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Sincerity

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
The first cassette I bought was Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Oz and the first CD I purchased was Led Zeppelin III.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Funny you should ask! When I was in sixth grade I had to write an autobiography and I recently found it. Each page was about different assigned subjects with the last one asking to talk about what I wanted to do with my life. I said I wanted to be a musician. Not bad….

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
The small market gig where the stage is shitty, the sound system is questionable at best, and there doesn’t seem to be a chance in hell anyone will be there. T hen by 11 pm the club is packed and you’re covered in sweat with people 10-inches away from you going nuts.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
I enjoy privacy.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Jerry Garcia’s guitar in 1973

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
The Beatles’ Revolver

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Some sushi place by The Independent in San Francisco.

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Colorado

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
I have a particular brand of humor, some might say “inappropriate.” Any internal filter I may have been born with has been completely wiped out from being on the road.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
How this is even still a question boggles my mind. The Beatles. It’s not even fair to ask. They’re mark on music is unparalleled, pushing the boundaries of every aspect of song craft, production and album art. They were responsible for new technologies in recording so George Martin and his engineers could keep up with their artistic needs. The Beatles inspired Bob Dylan to go electric, and they didn’t just change music but pop culture as a whole.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
A drug dog piss itself at the Canadian border as it searched my van.

Disco Biscuits Visit School for “Bisco Power Mission”

BAND MEETS KIDS AT FIRST PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOL
TO INSTALL ROOF-TOP SOLAR
PANELS

The Disco Biscuits by Ashley Beliveau

Less than a year after The Disco
Biscuits
played a sold-out show in New York to raise money toward the purchase of solar panels for a
school, the band visited the Albert M. Greenfield Elementary School in Philadelphia yesterday to see the results of
their work.

“Bisco Power Mission,” a joint project between The Disco Biscuits, the non-profit organization HeadCount and Mercury Solar Systems, helped Greenfield become the first
public school in Philadelphia to install roof-top solar panels. The $35,000 installation will save the school over
$43,000 in energy costs over the next 25 years.

The Disco Biscuits by Ashley Beliveau

On Wednesday, Nov. 17 the band visited a class of fifth-graders who have been learning about solar energy, and
then went to the roof to see the panels for themselves.

“It was pretty amazing to see how it all came together,” said Marc Brownstein, The Disco Biscuits’ bass
player and the co-chair of HeadCount, an organization dedicated to fostering civic participation through the power
of music. “We always talk about harnessing the energy that music generates – well in this case we literally made that
happen.”

The output of the photovoltaic panels is displayed in real time on a video monitor in the lobby of the school, adding
an educational element to the initiative.

“I love the fact that every time the kids come into the school they’re getting a little reminder about solar and
renewable energy,” said Jon Gutwillig, the guitarist for The Disco Biscuits who helped conceive the project.
“Some of those kids will grow up to be engineers, and be more likely to work in renewable energy because of
it.”

Next to the monitor is a plaque listing the names of individual fans of The Disco Biscuits who helped make Bisco
Power Mission possible by purchasing a commemorative poster in addition to a concert ticket.

“We’re really proud of the fact that our fans helped make this happen,” Brownstein said.

Tractorbeam :: 09.18.10 :: Mishawaka Amphitheater :: Bellvue, CO

Often to get a good tractorbeam going one needs to reverse the deflector dish and rewire the plasma array, but another option is for The Disco Biscuits to get off the mic and into their instrumental guise Tractorbeam. This self-described “lyricless Bisco explosion” hit Colorado last month and Mr. Borrell was kind enough to take some pictures of the Beam and that other Bisco alter-ego Conspirator.

Tractorbeam :: 03.26.10 :: Grand Central Nightclub :: Miami, Florida

Even without Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig, The Disco Biscuits still made the trek down to Miami to play the Ultra Music Festival (review available here) and a very special late night Tractorbeam show at Grand Central, a newly opened venue in downtown Miami. With the help of guitarists Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past, American Babies) and Chris Michetti (RAQ) standing in for Barber, the band was able to give fans the mostly-instrumental Bisco experience they’ve come to expect at a Tractorbeam gig. The Disco Biscuits hadn’t been to Florida since Langerado 2008 and they’ve never played Miami before, and the fans came out in full affect for the event. Both the Ultra Music Festival and the Tractorbeam shows are available on livedownloads.com.

The Show Must Go On For The Disco Biscuits

The news of Jon Gutwillig’s broken wrist was announced this morning on Facebook, but here is the official word from discobiscuits.com:

Last night following the show Jon Gutwillig injured his wrist in an accident. 1. Tonight’s show in Boston WILL take place. Though Jon will not be there, we plan on still rocking out with everyone at the House of Blues. Expect a big party tonight in Boston with special guests and lots of musical treats. Since the band is not at full strength, we are making tonight’s show a free show. PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW YOUR TICKET TO GET INTO TONIGHT’S SHOW BUT YOU WILL STILL BE REFUNDED.
