Disney’s schools in China: Middle Kingdom meets Magic Kingdom

A Western media company offers a product the Chinese can’t resist: education

ON A Tuesday at 6pm, children begin arriving at a bland commercial building just as the office workers are leaving. A small storefront leads to an English-language school run by Disney. It is not much of an entrance, squashed between a dusty drugstore and a fast-food joint. This being China, many passers-by assume it is a fake. But word is spreading through the pushy-parent network: this is the real thing.

Children as young as two toddle in and climb the stairs. At first glance, their classrooms look like dreary boxes, but two of the four walls are interactive video monitors. Each lesson is assisted by virtual mermaids, ducks, mice and other Disney icons. Touch the answer to a question (a fried egg, for example) on one screen, and it plops out of the sky on the other. While teachers instruct, the classroom seems to move. …

Sat Eye Candy: Disney

HAPPY 55th BIRTHDAY, YOU BIG OL’ AMUSEMENT PARK!

On this day in 1955, the grand opening of Disneyland was broadcast on national television. Since then it has inspired music both great and terrible, but from that televised moment forward it has had a profound impact on popular culture worldwide. The July 17th broadcast was a press preview and the park opened to the general public the following day on July 18, 1955. We commemorate this event with a selection of Disney songs.

We begin with a teenage Michael Jackson delivering a bonafide lullaby classic in a voice that simply denies description. Regardless of anything else, there’s no question MJ could sing.

Here’s a curious audience shot tidbit involving Nick Cave.

We’re not sure if we like this or are terribly frightened by it. Thanks, Los Lobos!

He’s no Louis Prima but Paolo Nutini does alright.

Another tune from The Jungle Book, done up in a most curious ‘n’ compelling style.

A sublime jazz combo anchored by Chick Corea (piano) and Sadao Watanabe (alto sax) gets romantic.

Terrible video quality but this Jackson 5 performance from 1971 revisits a tune from the one Disney movie that will likely never be reissued, Song of the South. The Jacksons originally covered this one on their 1969 debut album.

And we wrap with three jazz masters exploring the song we began with.
