Intel, HP, Microsoft on Display at National Retail Federation Show

The National Retail Federation Convention and Expo officially kicked off Jan. 9 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. This year, the show rebounded from a dismal turnout in 2010, when concerns about the economy and sagging consumer sales kept many people from attending. This year, however, a feeling of cautious optimism circulated around the showroom floor as the economy begins to improve and customers slowly begin returning to stores. In response, many of the top IT companies, such as IBM, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Microsoft, Motorola and Intel rolled out large displays to demonstrate a wide range of technologies, including point-of-sale machines, CRM software, analytics and mobile devices. Intel put on one of the more impressive displays with a large-screen display that allowed customers to shop virtually for Adidas shoes. Here, eWEEK took a look at some of the technology that is making its way into the retail space and how IT is changing the way customers shop both online and in traditional stores. – …

Leading PC Companies Move to All Digital Display Technology, Phasing out Analog

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 8, 2010 – AMD, Dell, Intel Corporation, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics LCD Business and LG Display today announced intentions to accelerate adoption of scalable and lower power digital interfaces such as DisplayPort and High-Definition Multimedia Interface® (HDMI) into the PC.

Intel and AMD expect that analog display outputs such as Video Graphics Array (VGA) and the low voltage differential signaling technology (LVDS) panel interface would no longer be supported in their product lines by 2015. HDMI has increasingly been included in new PCs for easy connection to consumer electronics devices. DisplayPort is expected to become the single PC digital display output for embedded flat panels, PC monitors and projectors.

DisplayPort and HDMI allow for slimmer laptop designs, and support higher resolutions with deeper color than VGA – a technology which is more than 20 years old. Additionally, as laptops get smaller and their embedded flat panel resolutions increase for more immersive experiences, the power advantages, bi-directional communications and design efficiency benefits of DisplayPort make it a superior choice over LVDS, the previous standard for LCD panel inputs.

Intel plans to end support of LVDS in 2013 and VGA in 2015 in its PC client processors and chipsets.

“Modern digital display interfaces like DisplayPort and HDMI enhance the consumer visual PC experience by immersing them with higher resolutions and deeper colors — all at lower power — to enhance battery life for laptops,” said Eric Mentzer, Intel’s vice president of Strategy, Planning and Operations for the Visual and Parallel Computing Group. “By moving to these new interfaces, Intel is able to focus investment on new innovations to enhance the PC experience rather than having to solve challenges of supporting legacy analog interfaces on our latest silicon process technology and products.”

AMD plans to begin phasing out legacy interfaces, starting with the removal of native LVDS output from most products in 2013. The company also plans to remove native VGA output starting in 2013, with expansion to all AMD products by 2015. This would mean DVI-I support will be eliminated in the same timeframe.

“Displays and display standards are rapidly evolving, with new features such as multi-display support, stereoscopic 3-D, higher resolutions and increased color depth quickly moving from early adopter and niche usage to mainstream application,” said Eric Demers, AMD’s chief technology officer, Graphics Division. “Legacy interfaces such as VGA, DVI and LVDS have not kept pace, and newer standards such as DisplayPort and HDMI clearly provide the best connectivity options moving forward. In our opinion, DisplayPort 1.2 is the future interface for PC monitors, along with HDMI 1.4a for TV connectivity.”

While the large installed base of existing VGA monitors and projectors will likely keep VGA on PC back panels beyond 2015, leading PC makers are in strong support of this transition.   The DisplayPort connector interface provides backwards and forwards compatibility by supporting VGA and DVI output via certified adapters, while also providing new capabilities such as single connector multi-monitor support.

Moving to the latest digital standards like DisplayPort enables customers to preserve backwards compatibility with installed equipment while taking full advantage of the latest advances in display capabilities, configuration options, and features,” said Liam Quinn, chief technology officer, Dell Business Client.

“We live in a digital-rich world and display technology must keep up with the explosion of digital content,” said George He, chief technology officer, Lenovo. “By transitioning to digital display technologies like Display Port and HDMI customers can not only enjoy a better computing experience, they get more of what’s important to them in a laptop: more mobility, simplified design with fewer connectors, and longer battery life.“

Leading display panel manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics LCD Business and LG Display also are in strong support of this transition.

Samsung Electronics LCD Business is already supporting this transition with embedded DisplayPort notebook panels, which we have been shipping since March of this year,” said Seung-Hwan Moon, vice president of engineering, LCD Business, Samsung Electronics.

“LG Display is fully prepared for this future transition. We already have different sizes of LCD panels with eDP out in the market to fulfill various needs of customers.“ said Michael Kim, vice president of IT Product Planning Department at LG Display.

The strong value proposition of scalable and low power digital display interfaces for PC users coupled with industry innovation around these interfaces should accelerate overall adoption of the newer display technologies for PCs.

Toggle File Extension Display with a Shortcut Key Posted By : Agnes Celina

radical approach to extending battery life by adding a second, very small
1.8-by-5-inch front-facing screen. The second screen can display the time and a

Samsung Continuum Android Smartphone Offers Ticker Display, Real-Time News

Samsung’s next device in the Galaxy S line of Android-based smartphones, the Continuum, boasts one piece of hardware that differentiates it from its siblings: a 1.8-inch "ticker display" that feeds real-time information on everything from news to e-mails and missed calls. The ticker display can operate independently of the 3.4-inch main display, allowing users to check on the latest sports scores or stock-market crash while toying with an app or answering an e-mail. The Continuum will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless later in November, for $199.99 with a mail-in rebate. During a Nov. 8 unveiling in New York City, Samsung executives suggested that some 3 million Galaxy S devices had sold in the United States since July. That makes the smartphones& currently offered on Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T& a solid competitor to not only other Google Android devices from rival manufacturers, but also the Apple iPhone. Those executives also touted the Continuum’s ticker display and its ability to feed things like entertainment updates as exactly the sort of competitive differentiator that will appeal to consumers; but only time will determine whether it’s truly a "killer feature" that drives sales. – …

Panasonic Toughbook S9, Rugged Tablet Go On Display

Among the tech products making an appearance at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2010 in Orlando, Fla., Panasonic displayed its recently released Toughbook S9, a 12.1-inch "business rugged" laptop designed to resist 220 pounds of compression and falls of up to 30 inches. Panasonic’s Toughbook line has long been known for its, well, toughness. But the company also seems determined to shave off a few ounces from the traditionally weightier devices: The S9 tips the scales at 3 pounds with a standard battery in place, which isn’t too shabby for a device reinforced with a magnesium alloy case and spill-resistant keyboard. Panasonic also claims the laptop’s battery life at 11 hours, which is also decent. Panasonic executives at the show said the S9 retails for $2,200. While it comes standard with Windows 7, Linux is also supported. Processor-wise, the S9 includes an Intel Core i5 and 2GB of RAM. Also note the distinctive circular touchpad, which is spill-resistant& because it would be too bad to have your laptop survive a fall off a conference table or crushing weight, only to have it doomed by a spilled can of Coke. – …

Apple iPad Could Add Video Chat, Smaller Sizes, Retina Display

Apples iPad has proven a massive success, selling about 1 million units per month and reinvigorating the consumer-tablets category. But now that competing manufacturers have seen how well a tablet can perform in the marketplace, theyre rushing to introduce their own devices: the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak and Research In Motions PlayBook are just a few of the tablets either al-ready available for sale or slated to hit store shelves within the next couple months. With that competitive pressure building, its inevitable that Apple will include a bevy of new features in the next version of the iPad. Front- and rear-facing cam-eras for video conferencing is as good a speculation as any, given how FaceTime video-calling is already a big feature in Apples iPhone 4 and newest iPod Touch. Beyond that, Apple may choose to give the device a different look or even intro-duce multiple sizes. But when will Apple debut iPad 2.0? The company whipped the curtain from the original iPad in January of this year, making that same timeframe a viable guess for 2011. Given the new tablets flooding the market-place, and the need for Apple to check their competitive momentum, the company may be interested in announcing a new iPad sooner rather than later. – …

CTIA Hottest in Show 2010 nominees

Here are my picks for the ten hottest mobile phones, devices and apps that were thrown into the fray to be crowned “hottest in show” at the CTIA 2010. There were plenty of Motorola, Samsung and HTC devices on display in the CTIA competition hall. Running various flavors or Android, BlackBerry OS, Apple iOS and Windows Mobile 6.5 the devices and apps shown here are the ones that caught my eye for enterprise and entertainment purposes. The impending release of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 hung like a pall over the Mobile 6.5 devices. Among the 30 plus devices and apps on display, only one was running on the Apple iPad. This was one more than any other tablet maker, not counting the ‘tweener 5-inch Dell Streak. Speaking of streaks, after just a couple of hours on display, the myriad touch devices looked like a petting zoo after one too many school groups had passed through. At the end of the day, these are still consumer&#151not industrial&#151devices and it showed. The streaky, greasy screens, the malfunctioning slider mechanisms and exhausted batteries took a little glitter off the otherwise tempting holiday display of gadgets and goodies. – …

Twitter Site Redesign Apes iPad App with Two-Pane Display

Twitter Sept. 14 trotted out a redesigned Website with the biggest new feature being the addition of a "details pane." Users will see the traditional timeline, plus additional information under each tweet. When users click on the tweet, the pane pops out to the right to display replies, videos, photos, other tweets or a map of where a geotagged tweet was sent from. Twitter also sports mini profiles. When users click a username, they will see a small box of a user’s profile info without navigating from the page. This will include a bio and recent tweets. The two-paned view recalls Twitter’s newly released iPad application, though Twitter CEO Evan Williams said both were developed separately even if at the same time. Twitter is banking that its 160 million-plus users will like the changes and that advertisers will get more value out of their Promoted Tweets with the new look. The company offers a video detailing the changes, but you can also see the changes here. – …
