Google Rewrites Google Docs with HTML5 Focus to Unseat Microsoft Office

Google April 12 said it has revised Google Docs using a new JavaScript layout engine and HTML5 to improve and speed up the document, drawing and spreadsheet editors in Docs.
Google is trying to make its Docs messaging and collaboration tools more suitable for today’s office workers, many of whom grew up working with Microsoft Office or IBM Lotus applications, which reside on users’ computers. However, Google is temporarily removing its Google Gears offline support for Docs beginning May 3. The idea is to improve Google’s offline functionality with more modern, HTML5-based Web browser technologies.

Google Docs Evolving to Storied GDrive With Access to Any File

Google Jan. 12 took steps to make files more universally accessible through Google Docs, letting Google Apps users upload to Google Docs all file types up to 250 megabytes, including large graphic files, ZIP folders, RAW photos or personal videos shot from a smartphone. Essentially, Docs is now a universal storage repository. This proposition is not unlike the long-rumored GDrive, which since 2006 was believed to be as mythical as a unicorn until evidence of it was discovered in a Google Pack file almost one year ago. Google denies this move is a move toward the GDrive.

Google Docs Makeover Boosts Google’s Collaboration Chops

Google augments its Google Docs suite, adding shared folders, batch file uploads and more than 50 other new features to make it more valuable for knowledge worker collaboration. The latest upgrades are the culmination of work Google has been doing for the last several months to position Docs less as a productivity suite targeted at taking down Microsoft Office’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps, and more as the team collaboration application for Google Apps.
