China has rejected claims that its new stealth fighter jet was built using U.S. technology, recovered from a plane downed over Serbia a decade ago.
Reports in the foreign media suggested that China used reverse engineering after the country’s experts allegedly studied parts of a U.S. Air Force F-117, shot down over Serbia in March of 1999.

After reading that California had cut funding for domestic violence victims, award-winning recording artist Moby took action. Pledging all proceeds from his three California tour dates to victims of domestic violence, Moby also partnered with the California Partnership To End Domestic Violence
(CPEDV) and Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) to raise awareness and funding for this critical issue.
“Sometimes there are simple cases of doing the right thing,” says Moby. “Lobbying the state legislature to re-instate funding for domestic violence programs seemed – simply – like the right thing to do.”
On October 21, 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) signed emergency legislation introduced by Senator Leland Yee to restore $16.3 million for 94 shelters and centers throughout California. This comes nearly three months after Governor Schwarzenegger eliminated all state funding for domestic violence shelters – leading to statewide closures and cutbacks.
Yee’s legislation – supported by statewide and local domestic violence prevention agencies – allocates $16.3 million in emergency funds. This is a step in the right direction – but a permanent funding source still must be secured since this is just a one-year fix.
The Domestic Violence Program funds allow local agencies to provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, and legal advocacy, as well as assistance with restraining orders, counseling and other vital support services. Domestic violence shelters are often the only thing standing between victims and grave physical danger, and California’s communities cannot sustain their loss.

INDIANS are rightly proud of their information-technology firms. But although the industry finds its biggest fans at home, it finds its best customers abroad. It earns $3.75 in exports for every dollar it earns in India. Infosys, the country’s most celebrated IT company, collects only 1.2% of its income from the domestic market. The leading provider of IT services to Indian companies is not a home-grown champion like Wipro or Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), but IBM.
As global IT spending has faltered, however, India’s outward-looking firms have turned inward. “India has been around for the last 5,000 years; most of Indian IT seems to have discovered it in the last couple of years,” says Rajdeep Sahrawat of NASSCOM, an industry body. It expects the domestic market (including call centres and other kinds of “business-process outsourcing”) to expand by 15-18% in the year to March 2010, compared with export growth of just 4-7%. …

I’m not too surprised that the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show – press days October 21 and 22 – is an overwhelmingly domestic affair this year. Automakers are scrutinising marketing spend like never before and Tokyo probably looks like a luxury they can do without, given the way it is always dominated by the Japanese OEMs anyway and any sales benefit inside Japan is pretty small – relatively speaking. You can see how other auto shows would stack up better from a cost-benefit analysis.
Tokyo is certainly shaping up to be an interesting show though, with some curious concepts. Nissan’s Land Glider is one that has me intrigued. I wonder if EVs – for reasons of efficiency – will eventually move away from being adaptations of conventional car designs…

Ireland’s economy is in free-fall
GDP contracted by an alarming 8.5% year on year in the first quarter of 2009, while the fall in domestic demand was even more marked at 15.5%. These contractions were larger than any other high-income OECD country, reflecting the impact of the collapse in Ireland’s property market and the decimation of its construction sector. Surging job losses are now weighing heavily on private consumption and, with the public finances in disarray, the extent of downside risk to the Irish economy appears without precedent.
Ireland is mired in a recession of a different order from those being seen in its developed-economy peers. According to recently released national accounts data, GDP collapsed year on year by 8.5% in the first quarter of 2009—a sharper contraction than in any other high-income OECD country. And if the GNP (gross national product) measure of growth is used instead, which also takes into account the value of income from abroad (particularly important for economies with large traded sectors, such as Ireland) the slump is worse still, with a year-on-year fall of 12%. …
