Marco Benevento Welcomes Baby, DVD, Trio, Duo and Garage A Trois

Marco Benevento

In addition to all the touring, recording, and writing, Marco Benevento has also welcomed his second daughter into the world earlier this month. Never one to slow for a moment, he’s also welcoming the DVD release of Marco Benevento & Friends (Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency) on November 10. Directed by Karina Mackenzie, the 2-plus hour DVD documents Marco’s 2008 residency at Sullivan Hall, including performances and interviews with Andrew Barr, Brad Barr, Billy Martin, Bobby Previte, Dave Fiuczynski, DJ Olive, G. Calvin Weston, Joe Russo, John Ellis, Jonas Hellborg, Kaki King, Marc Friedman, Reed Mathis, Skerik, Stanton Moore and Steven Bernstein. More than just a project about Marco, it captures a scene of artists and musicians who are clearly some of our generation’s giants.

Click here to pre-order from The Royal Potato Family. Get it before November 10 and you’ll receive a link to download five unreleased bonus clips.

In other new release news, the long awaited Garage A Trois album Power Patriot was released earlier this week. It’s available in record stores and online pretty much everywhere, including Amazon.

Garage A Trois

Garage A Trois is a collaboration between four of the most visionary improvisers of the time: Skerik on saxophones, Mike Dillon on vibes, Marco Benevento on keyboards and Stanton Moore on drums. Set for release October 27 by Brooklyn-based label The Royal Potato Family, Garage A Trois will play select tour dates to support the new recording in November and December.

The track listing for Power Patriot is:

Noah and the Whale Tour & Album Stream

Noah and the Whale Embark on October Headline Tour Supporting Their New Album
NPR Music Offers “Exclusive First Listen”

Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale embark on an October headlining tour supporting their new album and its accompanying film The First Days of Spring, out October 6 on Cherrytree/Interscope. They will kick things off at L.A.’s famed Roxy venue on October 20 playing select cities across the U.S. before ending the tour with a special event to be announced soon. In addition, there will be a number of intimate screenings of the film in select cities.

The U.S. release and tour come on the heels of the August 31 U.K. release where the album debuted in the Top 10 and was met with an overwhelming response: NME 9/10 – “…Spiritualized-tinged grandiose beauty,” The Sunday Times 4/5 – “…a masterpiece,” 4/5 Q Magazine – “breathtakingly beautiful,” 4/5 MOJO – “Breathtakingly ambitious.” In addition, the band performed this past August on the main stages of Reading and Leeds, where they shared the bill with Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party and Vampire Weekend.

In 2008, chief singer and songwriter Charlie Fink first began thinking of making an album that was also a film, and as he sees it, vice versa. The First Days of Spring was recorded in London and New York with producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons) and the film was shot on location in London and Surrey with an ensemble cast that includes model Daisy Lowe. The film can be seen as a companion piece to the album, as a visual version of it, or as a piece of work in its own right but this decision is one which Noah and the Whale have decided to leave up to the listener and viewer.

NPR Music is currently streaming the entire new album, one week ahead of its official release. The First Days of Spring is available for free, on-demand listening now through October 6 at npr.org/music, as part of the site’s “Exclusive First Listen” series.

Hidden Cameras: New LP & Tour

Canadian Folkers Hidden Camera Trek Across North America

Behind Their Fourth LP Origin:Orphan

Hidden Cameras

The experimental folk outfit Hidden Cameras have just announced a massive North American tour in support of their fourth full-length, Origin:Orphan. Fans can purchase tickets at galleryac.com. As a bonus, in anticipation of the new album and tour, fans who purchase tickets will immediately receive a free digital download of the newly released five-track In The NA.

Origin:Orphan was recorded in Berlin, Germany and Toronto, and delves into new musical territory. The dark synths of the title track and dominant orchestration of “Walk On” counterbalance the upbeat playfulness of “In The NA” and “Underage.” The Hidden Cameras, who have always been known for their celebratory live performances, often take to churches and art galleries, with forty-piece dance troupes. Trampled by Turtles: Tour

Trampled by Turtles Announce Extensive Fall Tour

Trampled by Turtles

Rising roots band Trampled by Turtles are headed out on a 40+ date fall tour. The coast to coast run is highlighted by headline shows at Minneapolis’ legendary rock club First Avenue, New York City’s hippest new theater 92Y Tribeca, and two nights at Denver’s Bluebird Theater.

Separating the band from the pack is the contrast of their lightening fast punk-influenced barn-burners and their lonesome Townes Van Zandt-inspired ballads. Artvoice Buffalo had this to say: “Their most recent release, Duluth, mirrors the raw intensity of their live performances, which are sure to leave audiences simultaneously raising hell and crying in their beers.”

Music can be streamed on Trampled by Turtles’ new website: www.trampledbyturtles.com.

The Mother Hips: New Album/Tour

THE MOTHER HIPS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM PACIFIC DUST TO BE RELEASED OCTOBER 27, 2009

NEW RECORD MIXES PURE AMERICANA STORYTELLING WITH PSYCHEDELIC POWER POP

BAND ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR DATES

The Mother Hips

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades. With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27 on Camera Records), California’s unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their “rootsy mix of ’70s rock and power pop” (Pitchfork) and for their unflinching ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty” (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips’ signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.

The Hips – led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) – have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band’s seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales – the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and the music! – all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.

Pacific Dust‘s compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 a.m. (the thundering album opener “White Falcon Fuzz”), record company politics (garage-rock boogie “Third Floor Story”), and a father and son’s relationship through music (on the ballad “Young Charles Ives”) indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here’s why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey – and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.

The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fan base. Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band’s most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.

The band will tour this fall in support of Pacific Dust. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is as follows:

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’S Josephine Now Up For Pre-Order
Includes Free Digital Download For Exclusive 7-inch

Magnolia Electric Co.

Now is the time to stake your claim on a copy of Josephine, the first LP from Magnolia Electric Co. in three years. Pre-orders of the album will come with a free, digital download of the 2009 limited-pressing 7-inch, It’s Made Me Cry. The 7-inch is a bit of an interlude into It’s Made Me Cry.

Like on the 7-inch, Josephine is also an experiment in Molina’s songcraft, introducing some real lessons in brevity as he whittles a handful of tracks into well-under three minutes, all while taking cues from great songsmiths like Willie Nelson and Warren Zevon.

Next week, Magnolia Electric Co. will set off on a North American tour with San Diego’s The Donkeys, a tour that includes a two-night stand in Molina’s beloved Chicago.

Welcome back intelligent dance music, we’ve missed you. – Music OMH, February 2009

The Juan MacLean

After releasing the much anticipated The Future Will Come (due 4/21 on DFA Records), Juan MacLean and Nancy Whang take The Juan MacLean on the road this spring. Juan, Nancy and band will be playing tracks live from The Future Will Come, which Filter magazine described as “perfectly orchestrated and directed to achieve maximum mood and dance-ability.” If the weather doesn’t make you sweat, your dance moves will.

The Juan MacLean is co-headlining the tour with Stockholm’s Axel Willner, aka The Field (Kompakt). After breaking out of the “boy and his laptop” mold following a tour with !!!, Willner teamed up with friends – percussionist/bass player Dan Enqvist and multi-instrumentalist Andreas Söderstrom to see what they could accomplish playing together. Modernizing their kraut rock influences, The Field recorded Yesterday & Today, due out May 19 on Anti- Records.

Co-sponsored by Scion and Nooka Toys, this is one dance party you do not want to miss.
Speaking of Nooka Toys, The Juan MacLean will have their very own Nooka Nooka Toy designed by Mike Vadino, who also designed the album cover for The Future Will Come.
