Dirty Dozen Brass Band Celebrate 25 Year Anniversary of Debut

My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now with Free Download and Tour

Dirty Dozen

Dirty Dozen Brass Band is ready to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of their debut release, My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now. The album heralded the coming of a new breed of brass band in the city of New Orleans, and for that matter, around the world. The Dirty Dozen will be re-issuing the re-mastered version of the quintessential brass band album that has defined the modern brass band era since its original release via Topspin, a revolutionary digital platform that ensures efficient direct-to-fan digital delivery of
music and much more.

In conjunction with the re-issue, the Dirty Dozen are embarking on a 19 city, three-week
tour that will find the band performing the album, My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now, in its entirety. While the Dozen have always been known for re-inventing and re-arranging their stellar catalog, this tour will find the band digging deep into the repertoire and revisiting certain pieces that haven’t been played live since the original release of the album and even earlier.

As a special anniversary gift to you, the Dirty Dozen are giving the title track away for free!

Gainsbourg/Beck Free Download

IRM, THE FORTHCOMING CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG ALBUM PRODUCED BY BECK

WILL BE RELEASED IN JANUARY 2010 / ALBUM’S TITLE TRACK IS AVAILABLE AS A FREE DOWNLOAD

Charlotte Gainsbourg

When Charlotte Gainsbourg began planning her forthcoming album, she thought Beck might be a perfect producer for the musically adventurous and diverse approach she had in mind. From the first casual hours together in the studio, she recognized a shared sensibility and the potential for a collaboration that would be both free and seamless.

FREE Download of “Irm” available here.

A DUO WITH BECK:

Gainsbourg explains, “We started with ‘Master’s Hands,’ which has a sort of African beat, and then we did ‘In The End,’ which is very melodic and much quieter, and then we did ‘Heaven Can Wait,’ which is more like a classical pop song. So in that same [first] session we went in three different directions.” Beck’s telling of the early session echoes Gainsbourg’s: “I pulled a bunch of songs out. And then I wrote a few, with her in mind, but when we spent time together they changed because I got more of a feeling of where she wanted to go. We got in the studio and I could see all the possibilities.”

Over the course of a year and a half of writing and recording together, Beck’s role grew to encompass all aspects of the creative process: He wrote all of the music and co-wrote the lyrics and is producing and mixing the recording. (This is the first time he has ever been so involved in another artist’s work.)

Beck brought in many of his regular collaborators, including Joey Waronker and James Gadson on drums, Brian LeBarton on keyboards, David Ralicke on trumpet and Beck’s father, David Campbell, for string arrangements. Though Gainsbourg’s unique voice is instantly recognizable throughout, her vocal performances here are as varied as the material.

Irm is Gainsbourg’s first album in nearly fours, following the very successful 5:55. Featuring collaborations with producer Nigel Godrich, Jarvis Cocker and Air, it went on to sell half a million copies worldwide.

Dongle users face stiff penalties

Woman using a laptop in a park

Mobile broadband users face stiff penalties for exceeding their download limits even though most aren’t aware of what those limits are.

A survey conducted by price comparison website Moneysupermarket found that three in four mobile broadband users risk such charges.

It found that over half did not know what their limit was, with a further 24% not even realising they had any.

O2 charges £200 for every extra gigabyte used and 3 charges over £100.

By contrast, Vodafone charges £15 per extra gigabyte with Virgin and Orange offering a £14.95 penalty.

Only T-Mobile has no charge and will advise heavy downloaders to change tariff.

Deterrent

Mobile broadband, in which users plug a so-called dongle into their laptop or computer, is becoming more popular.

"Dongle users are most at risk of incurring charges from exceeding download allowances as limits on dongles tend to be much lower than fixed-line packages," said James Parker, manager of mobiles and broadband at Moneysupermarket.

Someone with a three gigabyte limit would be able to do a few hours of surfing per week, download three music tracks per week, watch two hours of video on YouTube or iPlayer, download one film and spend a few hours on Skype.

"You’d only need to double that usage to find yourself with a £600 bill from O2," said Mr Parker.

In its defence, O2 said that the high penalty was "used as a deterrent and to make sure that others using the network had a good experience".

"Very few of our customers go over their limits," said a spokesman.

"We text them when they are at 50% of the usage, and again at 90% and again if they go over. We keep them well-informed and people understand our pricing structure," he added. </p

Pirate sites return in legal form

CD

Peer-to-peer download sites Kazaa and The Pirate Bay are set to return with a new, legal subscription model.

Kazaa, shut down by a $150m (£91m) lawsuit in 2006, will be reincarnated as an unlimited download service with a fixed monthly subscription rate.

The Pirate Bay has outlined a "give and take" model which pays users for sharing their resources.

The Swedish software firm that owns The Pirate Bay said the service would be free for a majority of users.

Both services are following the example set by Napster, which was the subject of several lawsuits that eventually shut down and bankrupted the service.

It re-launched in 2008 as the largest online retailer that did not restrict use of its content with so-called digital rights management (DRM) software. DRM restricts what people can do with the songs they buy.

Now, the two heirs to the Napster-driven peer-to-peer downloading throne have entered into a legal trading arena to compete with two very different business models.

Pricing structures

Kazaa is expected to launch in the US this week as a monthly subscription service, costing $20 (£12) per month for unlimited downloads.

It will issue songs in the Windows Media format, with DRM that will restrict use of downloaded content to five computers or devices.

The Pirate Bay, once the largest illegal download site on the web, was acquired by Swedish software firm Global Gaming Factory X after the original owners were found guilty of abetting violation of copyright law.

Last week, it hired Wayne Rosso – a former president of P2P site Grokster and founder of P2P site Mashboxx – to help strike deals and refine the new business model.

The site’s new incarnation is expected to launch in August, and the firm is developing plans to charge a monthly fee to use the service.

That fee would be reduced if users shared their downloaded content or allowed the service to utilise the storage space on their computers.

"For the great majority it will be free of charge, for a minority it will actually make them money, and for a small portion it will cost them," Hans Pandeya, chief executive of Global Gaming Factory X, told the AP news agency.</p

Ott – Live at Gnomelandia, A Free Mix

Ott

Veteran British producer Ott has been no stranger to the U.S. touring market in the last year. With almost 40 shows since last October, Ott has built solid momentum around his live show, which fuses traditional dub undertones with his mastery of electronic sounds.

Live at Gnomelandia is a 60-minute mix that incorporates unreleased versions of songs from both of Ott’s studio albums, Blumenkraft and Skylon, as well as an exclusive unreleased track. Listeners familiar with Ott’s studio sound, which is often categorized as downtempo or chillout, will notice their favorite tracks transformed into up-beat live grooves appropriate for the dance floor. Reflective of the Ott Live experience, Live at Gnomelandia is a glimpse of what many can expect to catch this summer while Ott is on tour.
