Rio Tinto and China: Digging with the dragon
A mining firm snuggles up to its biggest customer
MOST Western mining firms are happy to sell minerals to China but like to keep the dragon at arm’s length. Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian outfit, is different. Not only is China its biggest customer; Chinalco, a state-backed Chinese aluminium firm, is its biggest shareholder. On December 3rd Rio announced a joint venture with Chinalco to hunt for minerals in China and extended an iron-ore joint venture with Sinosteel, another state-backed firm.
Rio’s ties with China are complex. In 2007 Rio nearly choked on Alcan, a Canadian aluminium firm it bought for a disastrously expensive $38 billion. That emboldened BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest miner, to launch a takeover bid for Rio. China, afraid that the combined firms would wield too much sway over commodity prices, sent Chinalco to block the deal by buying a 9% stake in Rio in 2008. …

All Good/Forecastle Previews

How you holding up? It’s only July, kids, and there’s MANY more sets and sunrises to enjoy before summer comes to
an end. Eat some high fiber cereal, take your vitamins and pack enough beer. We’re far from over this season! Let’s
dive into two primo offerings this coming weekend.
All Good Festival :: 07.08.10-07.11.10 :: Marvin’s Mountaintop :: Masontown,
WV
This mid-Atlantic darling genuinely lives up to its catchphrase name. With no overlapping music on its twin Dragon
and Crane Stages, All Good encourages one to settle in and enjoy the musical adventure they’ve programmed for
you, cutting back on the gypsy wandering one experiences at most summer fests. Umph’s Jake Cinninger has dubbed
to performance space “the concert bowl,” and it’s all-too-easy to imagine stretching out on the grass as headliners
Furthur, Widespread Panic, Umphrey’s McGee and Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi rock ya for a little
while. Here’s a few suggestions for sets you should be out of your tent in time to enjoy.
1. Femi Kuti & The Positive Force ::
Friday :: 3:45-4:50 PM :: Dragon Stage
While his father is currently the toast of Broadway, Femi Kuti is breathing hot life into the musical tradition Fela
began. A fiery blend of dance-ready African rhythms, political themes and tight, large group musicianship, Femi &
Positive Force are lethal live. Come prepared to kick off your shoes and dance.
2. Dr. Dog :: Saturday :: 2:40-
3:40 PM :: Dragon Stage
If The Beatles had decided to NOT retire from the road and instead suss out ways to transmute their studio brilliance
into equally brilliant live performances, well, it might have sounded a good deal like Dr. Dog. While the band’s
presence has grown rapidly on the national stage, based on what JamBase heard at High Sierra, many fest veterans
haven’t experienced their life-affirming concert performances yet. This is soul-deep music that arms one with small
kernels of wisdom and puts a warm breeze beneath your heels.
3. The Lee Boys & The Travelin’ McCourys :: Sunday ::
12:15-2:15 PM :: Dragon Stage
Sacred steel meets bluegrass and southern rock. It’s a gosh darn beautiful combination and a far cry from the way
these boys play when Del is leading the charge. A real conversation that expands one’s musical horizons takes place
when this bunch assembles onstage. Not to be missed, and a grand way to get your Sunday rolling.

Mountaintop.

Forecastle Festival :: 07.09.10-07.11.10 :: Waterfront Park :: Louisville,
Kentucky
The 9th Annual Forecastle Festival, located in the heart of one of the great cities of the South, takes its
name, according to the fest’s website, from a sailing term meaning “a superstructure at the bow of a ship where the
crew is housed. Hard at work in the boundless blue sea, a place where workers unite after a hard day of labor. A
place where the people come together.” Sounds nice, and it won’t be hard to have a good time with headliners like
Widespread Panic, Smashing Pumpkins, Spoon and The Flaming Lips providing the
soundtrack for one’s revels. And there’s a lot of other golden moments waiting to happen on Forecastle’s four music
stages. Here’s three keepers we want to steer attendees towards.
1. Lucero :: Friday :: 10:30-12:00
midnight :: East Stage
While many of you will be glued to Widespread on the main stage, another American rock ‘n’ roll great will be playing
a short distance away. Over the past 12 years, Lucero has married punk to southern rock and quality singer-
songwriter sensibilities. Anchored by Ben Nichols and Brian Venable, the band is as real as a
heart attack and tuneful as the best Drive-By Truckers and The Replacements, just two kindred spirits to this
exceptional band.
2. Devo :: Saturday :: 7:30-8:45
PM :: West Stage
The term “devolution” didn’t exist before these spud boys invented it. Not many bands alter the general social
lexicon AND cover the Rolling Stones with aplomb. Devo is playing with real energy and wit these days, perhaps
reveling in the fact that they were already living the present moment decades before us all. You don’t want to tell
your grandkids one day that you missed a chance to see these guys live.
3. Joe Purdy :: Sunday :: 1:00-
1:45 PM :: West Stage
Very quietly but with sure, strong steps, Purdy has crafted one of the finest, heaviest songbooks of any American
singer-songwriter going. His beautifully broken voice, his vaguely hobo-esque appearance and especially his insight
into the human condition leave a profound impression.

Uncle Sam and the Dragon
Where America and China are viewed most favourably
KENYANS, it seems, are enthralled in equal measure by America and China, a finding from the Pew Research Centre’s Global Attitudes Survey that may reflect Barack Obama’s Kenyan ancestry and excitement about Chinese investment in Kenya. But for most of the other 20 countries polled, admiration for America and for China is mutually exclusive. France, which is often thought of as a hive of anti-Americanism, has a strongly favourable view of the United States. Like many other European countries it is wary of China. China’s greatest admirers, by contrast, tend to be countries that are predominantly Muslim. Russia is the exception to this, although that may be changing. Thanks to recent diplomatic efforts, Russia views America more positively than it did last year.

HP Shows Off Its New High-End Z-Series Workstations
Innovation in professional-level workstations has always trickled down from business sectors that are constantly pushing the envelope to find newer, faster, more efficient ways to do things. Computer-generated movie-making is one of those sectors. At Raleigh Studios, the nation’s oldest independent studio (located literally across the street from world-renowned Paramount Pictures in Hollywood), HP unveiled its new line of pro-style workstations on March 23. Raleigh, DreamWorks and other movie studios have been using HP workstations to turn out hit projects including movies like DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon and Raleigh-housed television shows such as Castle and The Practice. When HP showed its new machines last week at Raleigh Studios, it caught the attention of a lot of current users who are planning to upgrade their workstations this year or next. Following is a slide show showing the new workstations and detailing their new features.

HP, Intel Team Up with DreamWorks to Create ‘How to Train Your Dragon’
DreamWorks Animation SKG, well known for such hit movies as the Shrek series, Madagascar, Monsters and Aliens, Kung Fu Panda and Over the Hedge, opened the curtain on its latest computer-generated 3D movie project, How to Train Your Dragon on March 26. Along with IT partners Hewlett-Packard and Intel, the Glendale, Calif.-based studio hosted a group of about 100 international tech journalists and analysts on March 24 to demonstrate how HP’s new Z-series workstations utilizing Intel’s six-core processors now enable CG artists to create, play back, and render huge video files in the fastest times ever. These factors enable the artists to improve the quality of the work and get super-expensive projects like this one completed faster. DreamWorks spent about $150 million in a span of about 5 years just on Dragon’s CG production let alone marketing, distribution and related costs. Another mind-blowing fact is that this 3D film now takes up 100TB that’s right, terabytes of storage capacity in the studio’s data center farm, CTO Edwin Leonard said. Here is a slideshow explaining how new-generation CG works.

Trump Dragon Distillers posts 2.1% rise in net profit to $7.4m in 2Q
Trump Dragon Distillers Holdings, the producer and seller of baijiu products in Henan Province, China, says the group registered a 2.1% y-o-y rise in net profit attributable to equity holders of RMB35.6 million in the three months ended December 31, 2009 (2QFY2010).
But group revenue decreased 9.5% to RMB210.3 million from RMB232.3 million in the previous corresponding period. This was due mainly to the decrease in overall average selling price (ASP) from RMB37.6 per kilogram in 2QFY2009 to RMB31.6 per kilogram in 2QFY2010, although sales volume had increased from 6,178 tonnes to 6,655 tonnes in the respective periods.
Fear of the dragon
China’s share of world markets increased during the recession. It will keep rising
MANY people start the new year by resolving to change their old ways. Not China. On December 27th Zhong Shan, the country’s vice-minister of trade, declared that China will continue to increase its share of world exports. Figures due out on January 11th are expected to show that China’s exports in December were higher than a year ago, after 13 months of year-on-year declines. China’s exports fell by around 17% in 2009 as a whole, but other countries’ slumped by even more. As a result China overtook Germany to become the world’s largest exporter and its share of world exports jumped to almost 10%, up from 3% in 1999 (see chart).
China takes an even bigger slice of America’s market. In the first ten months of 2009 America imported 15% less from China than in the same period of 2008, but its imports from the rest of the world fell by 33%, lifting China’s market share to a record 19%. So although America’s trade deficit with China narrowed, China now accounts for almost half of America’s total deficit, up from less than one-third in 2008. …

Carrefour in emerging markets: Exit the dragon?
Investors may force the world’s second- largest retailer to retreat to Europe
IN CHINESE, Carrefour happens to mean “Every Happy Family”, a piece of luck which has doubtless contributed to the French firm’s success in China, where it has operated since 1995. In Brazil, too, a market which Carrefour entered in 1975, the company is treated like a local and vies for leadership with a Brazilian firm. The group’s businesses in Brazil and China are substantial, fast-growing and produce generous returns on investment. Now, however, to the dismay of executives at the firm, two big shareholders are reportedly pushing for a sale of the Asian and Latin American businesses.
Colony Capital, an American private-equity firm which specialises in property, and Bernard Arnault, chairman of LVMH, a luxury-goods group, first invested in Carrefour in 2007, and now own more than 13% of its shares and around 20% of its voting rights, mainly through a joint holding company called Blue Capital. Like many activist investors, they were caught out by the crisis: Carrefour’s share price has fallen from around €50 ($67) when they made their purchases to €30 today. Their original aim was to spin off Carrefour’s property portfolio, which would have brought a one-off gain, but plummeting property values undermined the plan. …
