As Verizon Wireless launches the Motorola Droid smartphone Nov. 6 for $199 with a two-year contract after a $100 rebate, it does so as the most heavily hyped smartphone since the gadget it will chase, the iPhone 3GS. Reviews have been streaming steadily into the blogosphere as intrepid gadget hawks from Boy Genius Report, Engadget and Gizmodo have covered every nuance of the gadget. Things to Ponder Before You Buy the Motorola-Verizon Droid

Verizon Wireless stores are opening as early as 7 a.m. local time Nov. 6 to begin selling the Motorola Droid, which is targeting Apple’s iPhone with a killer ad campaign and offering Google Maps Navigation GPS and other perks such a 5 megapixel camera. The smartphone is $199 after a mail-in rebate. Walt Mossberg of All Things Digital says the mobile device requires a minimum $70 monthly service plan for two years, excluding text messaging. Gearlog has more on the service plans, noting that if you want to connect Droid to a Microsoft Exchange account, it will cost $30. Also, Verizon Wireless will enable Droid users to tether their smartphones to their laptops in 2010.

Apple App Store Hits 100,000 Apps, but Droid Is Coming

Apple’s App Store now contains some 100,000 apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Although Apple declined to publicly estimate how many apps had been downloaded, eWEEK’s math puts the number at 2.250 billion. The iPhone and the App Store could receive a challenge in a few days from the Motorola Droid smartphone, which runs on Google Android and could encourage developers to create an alternative mobile-application ecosystem.

announced that its popular App Store now includes 100,000 apps for download.
The mobile-applications storefront features apps in 20 categories, and is
accessible to iPhone and iPod Touch users in 77 countries.

The Motorola Droid, an iPhone-challenging smartphone running Google’s Android operating system, will arrive on the Verizon Wireless network on Nov. 6 for $199 after a rebate and with a two-year contract. Verizon has been hyping the Droid with a television ad that highlights everything the iPhone lacks but the Droid possesses. These include a keyboard, interchangeable batteries, the ability to run simultaneous applications and the option to customize the device with widgets. Analysts are saying the Droid may be the first smartphone to hold its own against the iPhone. Palm had such hopes for the Pre, but was partly undone by its meager application offerings, as apps have become as important a part of a mobile device’s appeal as its hardware or operating system. Best Buy’s mobile specialty retail unit said it will begin pre-selling the Droid with an automatic, $100 rebate. Like Verizon, Best Buy Mobile will sell the device for $199 with a two-year contract. However, Verizon stores will charge customers $299 upfront, with a $100 rebate offering that must be mailed in. These can take awhile to process and several weeks typically pass before users receive their rebate check. Less than two weeks after promising to sell smartphones, netbooks and other devices based on Google’s Android mobile operating system, Verizon Wireless kicked off a television ad touting its Motorola Droid phone and shredding Apple’s iPhone in the process. Verizon Wireless will begin selling the Droid on Oct. 30, as far as anyone can tell. Boy Genius tested a Droid and said the device is blazingly fast, running Version 2.0 of Android. Jefferies Research said that such traction will lead to a boon in Google’s mobile applications, noting that Google’s location-based services such as Local Search, Google Maps, Search by Voice and Latitude should be readily monetizable over time.
