FOR thousands of years aspirin has been humanity’s wonder drug. Extracts from the willow tree have been used for pain relief in folk medicine since the time of the ancient Greeks. By 1897 a synthetic derivative (acetyl salicylic acid) of the plant’s active ingredient (salicin) was created. This allowed aspirin to become the most widely used medicine in the world.

In recent years its benefits as a blood-thinning drug have led to it being prescribed in low doses of around 50mg to reduce deaths from stroke and heart attack. “Russian mafia behind Šarić”

Runaway drug lord Darko Šarić was in charge of logistics and organization in drug trafficking operations behind which was the Russian mafia.

Suspected drug lord Darko Å arić, who is currently on the run, is hiding in Pljevlja, northern Montenegro, Belgrade daily Blic writes. According to the report, Å arić – a Montenegrin with Serbian citizenship – is hiding close to his hometown, and is under the protection of “Montenegro’s authorities and mafia bosses”.

Eli Lilly to close drug discovery center in Singapore

Eli Lilly & Co. will close its drug discovery center in Singapore, three years into a five-year, US$150 million ($196 million) plan to expand it.

About 130 employees will be affected by the closure, which will take effect as of the end of December, a Singapore-based external spokeswoman who declined to be identified said in an e- mail today. Projects developed in the city-state will be transferred to the company’s headquarters in Indianapolis, she said. Dow Jones Newswires reported the news earlier.

Eli Lilly to close Singapore Drug Discovery Center

Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) will close its Singapore Center for Drug Discovery in December, a spokeswoman for the U.S. pharmaceutical group said Monday.

The spokeswoman said in an email response to queries from Dow Jones Newswires that the facility, which was a joint collaboration with the Singapore government’s Economic Development Board, will close “to ensure we are structured to most efficiently bring innovative new medicines to patients” and that “projects and capabilities deemed a priority for Lilly’s global research organization will be transitioned to the company’s global headquarters” in the U.S.
