Infamous Stringdusters: New Album & Tour Dates

THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS TO RELEASE THINGS THAT FLY APRIL 20

The Infamous String Busters

About the most important question a young bluegrass band faces right out of the gate is whether they can play. The Infamous Stringdusters wasted no time in providing their answer — an emphatic yes — winning IBMA Album, Song and Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007, the same year they released their debut, Fork In the Road.

On Things That Fly, their third album, due out April 20 on Sugar Hill, the band ventures into virtually uncharted territory for an acoustic group: a sonically and thematically expansive album that lends itself to absorbed listening from start to finish, much like the great rock albums do.

Holed up in the Charlottesville, VA studio Haunted Hollow, with significant pre-production under their belts and Gary Paczosa (Nickel Creek, Dixie Chicks, Tim O’Brien) on board as engineer and co-producer, the ‘Dusters did things they’d never done before: guitarist Andy Falco put his hidden keyboard talents to use on smoldering organ parts; voices and instruments alike were splashed with reverb; and, though the band has no shortage of quality lead singers in fiddler Jeremy Garrett, dobro player Andy Hall and upright bassist Travis Book, a few fine-singing friends added novel tones, including country standout Dierks Bentley, Americana songwriter-chanteuse Sarah Siskind and Crooked Still frontwoman Aoife O’Donovan.

Factor in that every member of the band — rounded out by de facto tour videographer Chris Pandolfi (banjo) and Jesse Cobb (mandolin) — is a stylish, consummate picker with a hardly strictly bluegrass background, as well as a skilled songwriter, and you see that this band is genuinely built for breadth. “We wanted to make sure everyone had writing input on the record,” Hall relates. “We’d never done that before, and it’s a lot of why we started the band.”

Surprising covers, unusual arrangements and other departures from the expected make Things That Fly something different – namely a sign that they’ve elevated their sound and set their sights higher than ever before.

The Steepwater Band: European Tour w/ Marc Ford

BEN HARPER/BLACK CROWES VET HITS ROAD WITH CHICAGO ROCK POWERHOUSE

Marc Ford

In late winter 2010, the Chicago-based trio The Steepwater Band hops over the pond for six-week European Tour – a first in the history of the band. It kicks off with a bang as Marc Ford joins The Steepwater Band on the Spanish leg of the tour. Ford’s work with The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, and Booker T has made him one of the most celebrated guitarists of his generation.

Recently, The Steepwater Band commissioned Ford to produce their latest release, Grace and Melody (JamBase review). The flow of mutual admiration and respect during that studio session created a bond between the musicians and talk of a collaborative tour was on the horizon. The ten-city tour begins in Bilbao and stretches across Spain’s beautiful landscape to Madrid, Gijon and Barcelona, just to name a few. Each show will feature a TSB set to get the evening rolling. After the opening sets, Ford will join the band. Together they will perform songs from his solo releases as well as songs from the Steepwater catalog. These evenings of music are bound to astonish and inspire fans.

For the folks in the United States who cannot make the Spain shows, you are in luck. The Steepwater Band & Marc Ford will be playing two Midwest shows to kick-off the tour before flying over to España. The House of Blues’ funky Back Porch Stage will be the site in TSB’s hometown of Chicago on Saturday, February 20. Grab your tickets now, as this show is bound to sell-out. On Sunday, February 21, TSB & Marc will travel north to Wisconsin for an intimate show at the fabulous Green Room in Sheboygan. Tickets for this show on sale via the Green Room’s website.

After Steepwater & Ford rip through Spain, TSB continues on their own to debut in many cities across Europe. This month long trip will see them playing from London to Prague and many other historical places. Some markets/venues are currently pending, be sure to check www.steepwater.com in the coming weeks for a full schedule.

At least 19 dead in Mexico prison riot

At least 19 people were killed Friday in a riot that erupted in a prison in northern Mexico, a top security official said. The rioting that was sparked by rivalries among prison gangs also left 26 others injured, according to Jorge Torres, the public security secretary in the Mexican state of Durango.

Mexico prison riot leaves 19 dead

Mexico map

At least 19 inmates have been killed and more than 20 injured in a riot in a prison in the northern Mexican state of Durango, security officials say.

Smoke was seen rising from the prison in the town of Gomez Palacio, and gunshots were heard.

Officials said the violence resulted from rivalry between gangs in the jail.

State official Jorge Torres said that while the situation was now calm the overall atmosphere was tense. He described the prison as a "time bomb".

He told Mexican TV the fighting was a "dispute for dominance" and suggested that inmates being held on federal drug and organised crime-related charges might be behind the violence.

‘Dynamics disturbed’

"We have a significant number of criminals linked to organised crime," he said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.

"I think it is precisely the federal inmates who disturb the internal dynamics of the penitentiary, and they place the governance of it at constant risk."

Durango has been the scene of clashes between the Gulf and Sinaloa drug cartels in recent months.

President Felipe Calderon has declared war on the illegal narcotic organisation in Mexico, deploying 40,000 troops to fight the cartels.

Thousands have been killed in drug-related violence in the last few years.

Drug gangs have been involved previously in prison escapes and rioting.

In May, an armed gang believed to be linked to the Gulf cartel broke into a jail in the state of Zacatecas and freed more than 50 inmates.
