Hungary was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday, the strongest in the country since 1985.
There have been no reports of injuries so far and some buildings suffered minor damage.

Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković visited on Tuesday the central Serbian town of Kraljevo, that was hit with a 5.4 earthquake in early November. The premier said that in the year to come, the construction of prefabricated houses should continue intensively, and promised that all the works in the city will be completed by October 1, 2011.

Kraljevo Mayor Ljubisa Simović stated on Wednesday that the damage caused by an earthquake exceeds EUR 100mn. Simović told journalists that the city of Banja Luka in the Serb republic (RS) in Bosnia made a donation of EUR 25,000 to help the central Serbia town.

Interior Minister Ivica DaÄić said Friday that around 310 structures, mostly private homes, are not fit to live in after the earthquake early Wednesday. DaÄić said that around 1,130 structures have been inspected over the past two days, and specified that private homes account for 90 percent of the 4,000 structures damaged in the powerful earthquake.

Defense Minister Dragan Å utanovac called on the citizens to help alleviate the consequences of an earthquake that hit Kraljevo early on Wednesday.
After visiting the area damaged by the earthquake and talking with the residents of the central Serbia city on Wednesday, Sutanovac decided to put his October salary of about RSD 102,000 into the bank account set up for the aid to the injured.

Various organisations have threatened to hold a long march towards Islamabad against the government’s failure to complete the rehabilitation phase despite the passage of five years of the devastating earthquake that killed over 75,000 and left 3.5 million homeless. To mark the tragic day, AJK Law Minister Abdul Rashid Abbasi and other top officials attended a prayer ceremony and observed a minute silence, according to media reports.
Traders, students and civil society members held a demonstration across the city to protest against the governmentÂ’s lethargic attitude towards the ongoing rehabilitation work.
They said that hundreds of schools had yet to be repaired by the government.
“Thousands of homeless people are forced to sleep out in the open due to slow rehabilitation activities,” a protester said.

Donors pledge $5.3 billion for Haiti and talk bravely of fixing more than earthquake damage
THE effort to rebuild Haiti after its devastating earthquake on January 12th will run into countless pitfalls, but it seems that a lack of financing will not be among them. At a donor conference held at the United Nations in New York on Wednesday March 31st, nearly 60 countries pledged a total of $5.3 billion in aid over the next 18 months. Offers ranged from $10,000 (from tiny Montenegro) to $1.15 billion (from America). The total exceeds by 35% the Haitian government’s request for the near term and represents more than half the country’s expected economic output over that period. With promises made, the focus of reconstruction planning now shifts to converting these sums into improved conditions for survivors as quickly as possible.
Progress has been halting in the 11 weeks since the earthquake claimed some 220,000 lives and caused an estimated $8 billion in damage. Haiti’s fierce rainy season has begun, with some 700,000 people still packed into nearly 900 tent cities in Port-au-Prince, the capital. As many as 40,000 have clustered in high-risk areas, such as riverbeds, and many are reluctant to move. Concerns are growing about sanitation and contagious disease in the camps. Moreover, although the improvised settlements were initially peaceful thanks to a mix of solidarity and shell shock, they have grown increasingly dangerous as frustration sets in, with rapes becoming particularly prevalent. …
