Making a pitch

A cricket match in America

There are plans to launch a Twenty20 cricket league in the US similar to the successful Indian Premier League, a top US cricket official says.

The chief of the USA Cricket Association, Don Lockerbie, said that potential commercial partners are being sought for the tournament.

The matches next year are planned for three venues, including a new cricket stadium that has been built in Florida.

There are some 15 million cricket fans in the US, Mr Lockerbie said.

By organising America’s first professional cricket tournament, Mr Lockerbie said he was trying to make America "one of the top 15 cricket playing nations by 2015".

"[The planned tournament] is a very serious initiative and the chances [of it succeeding] are better than a 50-over tournament," he said.

Mr Lockerbie said proposals have already been sought from potential commercial partners and efforts were on to find out how much the tournament was worth.

Diaspora

With the USA being the second biggest market in the world for cricket television broadcast rights and Internet revenues, organisers expect many companies to set up teams and sponsor the tournament.

If everything goes according to plan, a number of private city or state based teams containing players from around the world will be playing in the tournament which will be recognised by the International Cricket Council.

Many of the matches will be held at a new cricket stadium in Florida, which can accommodate more than 15,000 fans.

What is still unclear is how the ICC will find a window in the crowded cricket calendar to accommodate the American tournament.

Also, memories of the flop inter-island Twenty20 competition in West Indies sponsored by the controversial Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford are still fresh in the minds of cricket fans around the world.

The USA Cricket Association is also trying to get five Test cricket playing countries to send their teams to the US to play some ICC-recognised warm up matches in the run up the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in the West Indies.

"If these warm up games happen, it will be history in the making," Mr Lockberie says.

The USA Cricket Association believes there are an estimated 15 million cricket fans in the USA, mostly from the South Asian diaspora.

There are also an estimated 200,000 cricketers in America, according to Venu Palaparthi, co-founder of Dreamcricket.com, US’s largest cricket portal which also runs its own cricket academy.

‘Common heritage’

Mr Palaparthi says cricket was being played in more than 40 universities over the last decade.

The cricket stadium in Florida

Cricket is played at school level in nine states. New York’s public school cricket program has 23 participating schools.

The area along the East Coast extending from Boston to Washington DC appears to have the most number of cricketers. Outside this area, the largest concentrations of cricketers are in Florida, Texas, Illinois, Michigan and California.

With median incomes of expatriate Indians – who form the bulk of the South Asian diaspora – one of the highest in the country, cricket organisers feel that cricket has good commercial prospects.

International cricket can trace its earliest successes to the US.

The first recorded first class cricket match in the world was played between the US and Canada at Bloomingdale Park in New York in 1844 with over 10,000 spectators in attendance.

Cricket remained popular till the middle of the 1880s – an American team even defeated the West Indies in an international match in British Guyana in 1880.

One reason, according to scholars, why cricket did not take off in America was that the game had no "common heritage" to draw on.

A cricket match in America

"Unfortunately, in the United States cricket has no common heritage to draw on because the individual expatriate histories of the game do not provide common ground," writes P David Sentence in his book, Cricket in America, 1710-2000.

"When an American talks of baseball he knows what Babe Ruth did on a certain day in the year. Every Englishman, Indian, Pakistani, or West Indian carries his own version of cricket history in his head. When these histories are supplemented by American cricket achievements on the field of play then cricket will have arrived in the United States."

New bidder for National Express

• Suitor believed to be European private equity firm
• First Group withdraws after Takeover Panel ultimatum

National Express was at the centre of fresh takeover turmoil last night after rival transport operator First Group walked away from making a formal offer for the troubled rail and bus group and another unnamed bidder appeared on the scene.

There was intense speculation about the identity of the new suitor, understood be a European private equity company.

First Group, which initially approached National Express in June with proposals for an all-share merger of the two businesses, ditched its plans after its target asked the City’s Takeover Panel to impose a “put up or shut up” deadline for it to make a formal offer.

Within minutes of Britain’s biggest transport firm announcing its withdrawal, National Express disclosed it had received an approach “in connection with a possible offer for the group from another third party whose intentions are not yet known”.

National Express, which is in turmoil following the resignation of chief executive Richard Bowker and its decision to walk away from the loss-making £1.4bn east coast rail franchise, said in a statement: “There can be no certainty that this approach will lead to an offer being made for National Express, or as to the terms on which any offer might be made.”

Under Takeover Panel rules, First Group is now banned from bidding for six months unless a rival offer emerges. The group, operator of the First Great Western rail franchise and yellow school buses in the US, had wanted to do the deal on friendly terms, but was rebuffed.

National Express said at the time it was concentrating on implementing a number of initiatives to strengthen the business and did not consider it appropriate to enter into merger talks.

A merger of the two groups would have created a business carrying more than 1.4 billion bus passengers and 409 million rail passengers in the UK a year.

Sir Moir Lockhead, the First Group chief executive, said last night: “In making a preliminary approach to the board of National Express, our intention was to enter discussions with a view to seeking a recommended merger that would create a significant British transport group, in a stronger position to compete with state-run companies across Europe. We believe this combination would have offered a highly compelling proposition to both sets of shareholders.”

First Group said it had decided it would be “inappropriate” to consider a formal offer “at this time” because of the uncertainty facing National Express, which has been warned that the Department for Transport might strip it of its other franchises, East Anglia and c2c, the London to Tilbury and Southend operation.

But it said it reserved its right to return with an offer in the event of a rival bid being made or if it received the backing of the National Express board.

National Express had refused to enter into discussions with First Group even though it does not have a chief executive after the decision by Bowker to depart for the Middle East, and the controversy over the east coast main line.

National Express had been trying to renegotiate the franchise on the London to Edinburgh route – for which it had paid £1.4bn – and received the approach from First Group just two days before the dramatic move by the Department for Transport.

National Express was warned by the transport secretary, Lord Adonis, that there might be grounds to terminate its two other rail franchises after it refused to continue funding the east coast line.

The cash-strapped firm had been contracted to run the franchise until 2015, but funding is now expected to run out later this year. The problem with the franchise was that National Express had to pay back to the government a total of £1.4bn in premiums over the life of the deal. But passenger growth has stalled in the recession and the company was unable to renegotiate the franchise with the DfT.

Adonis subsequently announced that a new public organisation – East Coast Main Line Company – would operate the line.

Jemimah Puddleduck: No Molo, Nuccio & Ingram Sub

Jemimah Puddleduck Announces Replacement Drummers To Fill In For John Molo

Mark Karan and Jemimah Puddleduck must regretfully announce that, due to scheduling problems, John Molo will not be participating during the band’s August shows.

Fortunately, adequate replacements have been found: for August 6-7-8 on the East Coast, Puddleduck will welcome the amazing Carlo Nuccio, and for August 14-15 in Denver, the glorious Wally Ingram.

Carlo Nuccio has recorded with Tori Amos, Emmylou Harris and Buckwheat Zydeco, as well as just about every band that ever called New Orleans home. You get rhythm with your birth certificate in NOLA, but Carlo got several extra helpings.

Wally Ingram is the ubiquitous percussion accomplice to Sheryl Crow, Eric Burdon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, David Lindley, Crosby, Stills & Nash – and that’s just the beginning of the list.

These guys are simply superb, and Jemimah Puddleduck is looking forward to their August shows.

Uwc Plans New Tampines Campus

Demand at international school spikes with steady influx of foreigners

Teo Xuanwei
xuanwei@mediacorp.com.sg

FACED with the happy problem of overwhelming demand from parents, the
United World College of South East Asia has decided to open a new campus
in Tampines, which will be ready in three years’ time.

“The economy is booming and a lot of people are moving into Singapore. And
the quality of education for their children is an area where parents are
not ready to compromise,” said the college head, Mr Julian Whiteley,
yesterday.

For the last admission exercise in June, the college received more than
1,800 applications for 550 places.

The school also has a waiting list, of between one and three years,
depending on the level. The new 6-ha campus at Tampines Street 73 will be
about half the size of the college’s 11-ha campus at Dover Road but will
have similar facilities.

“It’s basically one college, two campuses. We will offer the same type of
education and curriculum,” Mr Whiteley said.

Like its Dover facility, the teacher-to-student ratio for the new campus -
operational in August 2010 – will be maintained at 11.6 to 1, which means
it will have about 220 teachers eventually.

Mr Mike Price, deputy college head, said the new campus will also continue
with the tradition of not just emphasising academic achievements but also
maintaining a “values-driven education, where students can explore,
inquire and challenge”.

The new campus will also cater to students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade
12 – the equivalent of nursery to junior college education for students
between four and 18 years old – and boarding facilities for about 200
students will also be available.

The school expects to hit its full capacity of 2,500 students five to
seven years after the Tampines campus starts operating, pushing total
numbers to about 5,400.

While the Tampines campus is being built, a transitional primary school
for about 400 students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 4 will open in Ang Mo
Kio next September.

According to Mr Whiteley, the college chose Tampines for three reasons:
The absence of a major international school in the area,
relatively-cheaper property prices, and the town’s convenient transport
network.

With more foreigners settling down in Singapore – more than 77,000 came
here last year – the college is not the only international school with a
spike in demand.

Two months ago, DPS International School announced it would have a new
campus to accommodate about 2,000 students in the East Coast from next
April. Chairman C P Kabra said that the school has received about 500
enquiries from parents.
