Social media in Indonesia: Eat, pray, tweet

Social-networking sites have taken off in Indonesia. Who will profit?

WHAT does the most populous Muslim nation do in its spare time? Increasingly, it swaps gossip online. Indonesia is now the world’s second-largest market for Facebook and the third-largest for Twitter, according to several web research firms. For industry insiders, however, the most exciting statistic is not how many Indonesians use social media, but how many still don’t. Of 230m or so Indonesians, fewer than 20% are connected to the internet.

Foreign firms see untapped potential. Facebook doesn’t even have an office in Indonesia, yet it has grown like crazy, to 30m users. In May last year Yahoo! ventured into this fizzing market by buying Koprol, a location-based social network. Indonesian culture seems particularly receptive to online socialising. People love publicity, don’t fret much about privacy and gleefully follow trends. “Everything is about friends and location,” says Andy Zain, the founder of MobileMonday Indonesia, a networking forum. …

Praise for Cymbals Eat Guitars:
“You could blame it on so many bands being from autophobic NYC, or that the Pacific Northwest gods of indie are still going too strong to already be a primary influence, but neither would explain New York’s Cymbals Eat Guitars’ Why There Are Mountains. While there’s plenty of geographical signifiers on their debut, it’s almost topographic in its approach, without hooks and choruses so much as map-like layouts of mountains and sloping valleys.” – Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“The most obvious thing about Cymbals Eat Guitars is that their epic, widescreen indie rock bears a striking resemblance to that of Built To Spill and early Modest Mouse.” – Fluxblog

Hang Up and Eat: Intel’s Mobile Device Etiquette for the Holidays

The holidays can be tense enough, what with the various family commitments, gift-buying and travel. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are strong opinions out there regarding how and when people should and shouldn’t use their Internet-connected mobile devices, from laptops to smartphones to netbooks. According to a survey of adults by Harris Interactive, conducted for Intel, more than half of the population agrees that mobile devices are a part of daily life and that society needs to adapt, and that the nature of business means that people have to be constantly connected. However, 80 percent said there are unspoken etiquette rules around the use of mobile devices, and 69 percent said violations of those rules are unacceptable. Here, eWEEK presents Intel’s finding of some of the dos and don’ts around mobile technology use during the holidays.

Conservation and cookery: Eat for the ecosystem

A heartening tale of business and the environment

RED lionfish are pretty, but they are also greedy. A single one of them, introduced into a coral reef where the species is not native, can reduce the number of other small fish by 80% in just a few weeks, according to Mark Hixon, a marine biologist at Oregon State University. To make matters worse, lion fish are top predators. Though their size would make them an easy mouthful for a shark or a grouper, their poisonous spines mean they are more or less invulnerable.

In the lionfish’s native waters, the western Pacific Ocean, the local ecosystem has adjusted to such predatory behaviour. In the Caribbean, though, the lionfish is a novelty—and a destructive one. Anything that damages the biodiversity of the reefs in diving resorts is bad for tourism, so in some countries, such as Mexico and Belize, people have tried introducing bounties payable to divers who catch lionfish. Sadly, there are too many lionfish about, and the bounties have proved too expensive to sustain. But there may be an answer: prove that the lionfish is not in fact a top predator after all, by getting people to eat it. …
