eBay Will Sell Majority Stake in Skype to Private Investors

eBay plans to sell 65 percent of its stake in Skype, the popular Internet-based calling service, to a group of private investors that include Marc Andreessen’s venture-capital firm. Although the acquisition of Skype by eBay appeared promising, a lawsuit and other issues prevented the original deal from reaching its full potential, despite robust revenue and user numbers. Analysts suggest that the private investor group may have big plans for Skype.
– Four years after acquiring Skype Technologies, eBay
plans to resell a majority share of the Internet-based calling service to a
team of private investors for $1.9 billion in cash.

eBay reaches deal to sell Skype

eBay sign

Online auction site eBay is poised to say it has agreed to sell internet phone company Skype, reports say.

Skype is expected to be sold to a group of private investors, including Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen and private equity firms.

EBay has been trying to sell Skype for some time, and has said that Skype had "limited synergies" with it.

When eBay bought Skype for $2.6bn (£1.6bn) in October 2005, many analysts thought the price was too high.

For sale

The New York Times said that a price has not been named, but that eBay had been seeking about $2bn for Skype.

Earlier this year, eBay had said that it planned to spin off Skype and list its shares in the first half of 2010, an announcement many took as a signal that the firm was for sale.

Skype’s software lets computer and mobile phone users talk to each other for free and make cut-price calls to mobiles and landlines.

Unlike traditional mobile calls, which are transmitted over a cellular network, Skype turns your voice into data and sends it over the internet.

Since being acquired, the number of registered Skype users has risen to 405 million from 53 million, though free user-to-user calls still dominate the service.

Jackson memorial tickets offered on eBay

• Fans offering memorial tickets for thousands of pounds
• eBay taking down auctions relating to memorial service

It was the hottest ticket in town. Over 1.6 million Michael Jackson fans applied to attend tomorrow’s (Tuesday 7 July) memorial service to the King of Pop. And yesterday, 8,750 successful entrants reacted to an email that read: “Congratulations, your application was successful.”

Some fans were delighted, such as Deka Motanya from San Francisco, who tweeted: “OMG OMG OMG OMG I got tickets to the Michael Jackson memorial service.” Others, however, viewed it as an opportunity to make money.

Twitter users such as Unai Montes-Irueste were accepting offers from bidders on tickets to the event. Meanwhile, others were selling tickets for thousands of pounds on eBay in exchange for the relevant vouchers and codes. However, eBay has since informed the Guardian that they are actively taking down all auctions for Michael Jackson memorial tickets.

Some sites have debated the moral implications of fans selling tickets to a memorial service, whereas SouthFlorida.com ran a poll asking readers what they would do had they won tickets.

Each of the 8,750 randomly selected applicants will receive two tickets to the ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. According to event spokesman Michael Roth, wristbands will be issued and organisers will check ID to make sure that names correspond with those of online applicants. However, Roth admitted that ticket touting was inevitable, as winners could give their second wristband to anyone. “Theoretically, the second wristband can be sold,” he said.

Despite the potential financial rewards, some Jackson fans will be determined to attend no matter what. Alex Garcia tweeted: “Holy shit I got tickets to #MichaelJackson Memorial! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! WOW.” Later tweets revealed his enthusiasm hadn’t dimmed. “Going to get 3 hours of sleep then off to LA to my Tickets,” he posted, adding: “I am probably the only person in escondido, ca :)”

The memorial service will be broadcast live on five television networks. LA officials are still working towards making the event safe after reports of huge crowds descending on the venue.

Jackson died on 25 June after going into cardiac arrest in the bedroom of his rented mansion. He was 50.
