Range anxiety – has the realisation yet to dawn?

This BBC report summarises the difficulties at the heart of the electric car proposition. There’s just no getting away from it: low range between battery charges will put people off of pure electric vehicles, at least in terms of replacing a typical one-car-does-all household’s vehicle.

The BBC journalist’s London-Edinburgh run in a Mini E highlights the problems associated with both low range and range anxiety. Despite his parting shot that the car successfully made it, you’d be mad to attempt such a journey in an electric car recharging as you go – it took him almost four days. Pure EVs will have a place in the market, but you wouldn’t use one for a journey like that if you had to rely on charging the battery along the way. A trip of several hundred miles would obviously suit a conventional vehicle or, dare I say it, a train or plane. The pure EV will find a niche in an urban setting or as a low daily mileage second car.

That will probably mean, in practice, reliance on domestic charging, but with users also prepared to do slightly longer journeys where they can leave the car’s battery to recharge – say, while they go shopping or at a place of work. A battery charging infrastructure will get some use (though I wonder how much…) and is also important to offer some peace of mind to EV users.

But these are clearly niche market vehicles and when it comes to journeys of several hundred miles, a pure EV just isn’t quite the ticket. I just wonder whether people who say ‘yes, I’ll have an electric car please, especially given the rising price of petrol’, will be as keen when they consider the occasional need for a longer journey than their daily average (in exceptional circumstances) and the premium they are paying on purchase price. It boils down to this: just how big is the car using segment for whom the EV really works and are there enough customers to go round – fleet and retail?

(And the media should be looking at how pure electric vehicles work in their planned market settings rather than unrealistic journeys like that one…I think I can see the shape of the Volt/Ampera ‘range anxiety busting’ BBC report later this year already…)

Jackson Browne & David Lindley Album & International Tour

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY COME TOGETHER FOR INTERNATIONAL TOUR

THE DUO RELEASE LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET ON MAY 11

Jackson Browne

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.

The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.

Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).

Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.

On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973′s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983′s acclaimed El Rayo-X.

Prior to 2010′s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain-in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino” – featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.

In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”

Efterklang: Magic Chairs

EFTERKLANG TO MAKE 4AD LABEL DEBUT WITH MAGIC CHAIRS, OUT 2/23

Efterklang

Newly signed to 4AD, the Copenhagen-based quartet Efterklang make their label debut with Magic Chairs, their third full-length studio album, out February 23.

Efterklang are Mads Brauer (electronics and various instruments), Casper Clausen (vocals and various instruments), Thomas Husmer (drums and trumpet) and Rasmus Stolberg (bass and guitar).

Removing themselves from their home city and heading to Aarhus’ Feedback Recording Studio, the band recorded basic tracks as a band (drums, bass, guitars and piano), replicating the live set-up from where the songs had initially taken form. Later, back in Copenhagen, orchestral flourishes were added and guest musicians were called upon (including their touring band members – Peter Broderick, Heather W. Broderick, Frederik Teige and Daniel James).

For even greater clarity of sound, British engineer and producer Gareth Jones (Nick cave and The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Interpol, Mogwai, Grizzly Bear, Wire and more) was drafted in for mixing duties to work alongside their in-house electronics wizard in Brauer.

Check out the MP3 for “Modern Drift” here.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey has announced Winter 2010 tour plans. The band will head out for a 12-date West Coast run in February marking the hard touring quartet’s first shows since selling out The Eclipse on New Year’s Eve in their hometown of Tulsa. In March, JFJO makes a return trip to Europe for ten dates spanning eight countries, including their second appearance at the prestigious Turku Jazz Festival in Finland.

They spent seven days in December tracking at acclaimed engineer/musician David Teegarden‘s Natura Digital Recording Studios just outside of Tulsa.

The album, tentatively scheduled for a June release, will reflect JFJO’s first year of touring and writing together since founding member and pianist Brian Haas and drummer Josh Raymer revamped the lineup last January with the addition of lap steel guitarist Chris Combs and upright bassist Matt Hayes.

Professional-services firms: Laid-off lawyers, cast-off consultants

The downturn is sorting the best professional-services firms from the rest

WHAT do you say to a recent law-school graduate? “A skinny double-shot latte to go, please.” From New York to Los Angeles, Edinburgh to Sydney, the downturn of the past two years has hit the legal profession with unprecedented severity. As even some leading law firms struggle for survival, recruitment has dried up. The lucky few who get jobs are often being told to find something else to do for now, and report for duty on some far-off date. The same is true for MBA graduates seeking jobs in management consulting. Even the mighty McKinsey is said to be postponing start dates by several months.

Given that new graduates are the grunts of the professional-services industries, earning less than anyone else and working the longest hours, the lack of demand for their services is the clearest indicator of how bad things are. Although a deeper-than-usual cyclical downturn is largely to blame—and is hitting hardest those firms that specialised in financial-market activities such as mergers and acquisitions, and private equity—it is already clear that there will be long-term structural consequences, not least a growing gap between the best firms and the rest. …
