New ATandT Zero Charger Is Smart, Efficient and Money Saving

The AT T Zero Charger knows when to say when: sensing if its not connected to a phone, it can cut off the power supply from an electrical outlet. It will also work with phones from different manufacturers, ideally including Apple, Nokia and Samsung, eliminating the need for each new phone to ship with a charger.
– This May, “top green carrier” AT amp;T will begin selling the Zero Charger, an energy- and resource-saving charger for a variety of mobile phones.

The charger not only charges devices with better power efficiency, but
it can sense when its plugged into a wall but not also a phone, and

Efficient aviation: V for victory

Copying birds may save aircraft fuel

BOTH Boeing and Airbus have trumpeted the efficiency of their newest aircraft, the 787 and A350 respectively. Their clever designs and lightweight composites certainly make a difference. But a group of researchers at Stanford University, led by Ilan Kroo, has suggested that airlines could take a more naturalistic approach to cutting jet-fuel use, and it would not require them to buy new aircraft.

The answer, says Dr Kroo, lies with birds. Since 1914, and a seminal paper by a German researcher called Carl Wieselsberger, scientists have known that birds flying in formation—a V-shape, echelon or otherwise—expend less energy. The air flowing over a bird’s wings curls upwards behind the wingtips, a phenomenon known as upwash. Other birds flying in the upwash experience reduced drag, and spend less energy propelling themselves. Peter Lissaman, an aeronautics expert who was formerly at Caltech and the University of Southern California, has suggested that a formation of 25 birds might enjoy a range increase of 71%. …

Brocade Offers High-Performance, Efficient Ethernet Switch

Brocade is looking to give service providers a switch that will offer the performance they want in a compact and energy-efficient form factor. The NetIron CER 2000 Series switch offers 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 10G Ethernet capabilities in a 1U form factor with almost three times the performance of a comparable Cisco switch while taking up 33 percent less space and consuming 66 percent less power, Brocade officials say.
– Brocade Communications Systems is offering service providers a new switching
router that it says brings 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities
along with enhanced space and power efficiency.
Brocade’s NetIron CER 2000 Series compact switch, announced Nov. 17, offers
high perform…

Big Banks Are NOT More Efficient

I have repeatedly pointed out that big banks are not more efficient than smaller banks. For example, I previously noted that an article in Fortune concluded: The largest banks often don’t show the greatest efficiency. This now seems unsurprising giv…

Dell Pushes Efficient Enterprise at Oracle OpenWorld

CEO Michael Dell aims to cut $200 billion in IT spending by pursuing the concept of the efficient enterprise. Meeting that goal will require standardization, simplification and automation, Dell said at Oracle OpenWorld.
– Standardize, simplify and automate those three words are at the heart of a
strategy laid out Oct. 13 at Oracle
OpenWorld by Michael Dell.
Dell, CEO of the company that bears his

Efficient Frontier: Microsoft Bing Gains in Spend, Click Share at Google’s Expense

Microsoft Bing posted quarter-over-quarter gains in paid clicks and spend share, according to Efficient Frontier. Those gains appear to be coming at the expense of Google, whose share of search spending fell to 73.7 percent, from 75.5 percent in the second quarter. Bing’s paid search momentum is muted by a few factors. Google commands some 70 percent of the search advertising spend and its search market share appears insurmountable.

Though recent reports of search market share imply Microsoft Bing may have peaked, the search
engine posted quarter-over-quarter gains in paid clicks and spend share,
according to Efficient Frontier, which published its search engine performance
report for the third quarter Oct. 13….

Chip Shot: Energy Efficient Servers – Intel’s ACE in the Hole

To further cut costs associated with cooling the datacenter, Intel today revealed findings from a multi-company study funded by the California Energy Commission. The result is ACE Technology – an intelligent cooling management approach that, for the first time, enables datacenter managers to use existing technology in servers to more precisely control the cooling infrastructure. This innovation to the platform is expected to yield significant efficiencies in data center energy consumption. Even the EPA recognizes the value of the ACE concept and now requires their Energy Star servers to have the temperature and communication components needed for this approach.

Innovation@Intel – Wireless Resonant Energy Link: Efficient Wireless Power

With the dramatic rise in the number of electronic devices we each use in our everyday lives powered by batteries that often need recharging; the costs, resources and management of multiple, incompatible power cords, and adapters have become cumbersome and time consuming for the typical user. Intel Labs Seattle researchers demonstrated recently, at Research@Intel Day, “Wireless Resonant Energy Link” (WREL) – the transfer of electricity without using any wires. This technology could allow people to cut the last cord that keeps mobile devices tethered. See video for more information on this research.

IBM Supercomputers the Most Energy Efficient

IBM, which already boasted the most powerful supercomputers in the world, now also claim 18 of the top 20 most energy efficient systems, according to a list compiled by the Green500.org, a complementary list to the Top500 of the fastest computers. IBMs most powerful system also was the fourth most efficient, and Green500.org noted that while all the supercomputers on the list were using 15 percent more power than those on the list in 2008, they also were 10 percent more efficient.
– IBM, which already has five of the top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world, now also dominates the top of the list of the most energy efficient systems.
Eighteen of the top 20 most efficient supercomputers are IBM systems, according to the Green500 list, released July 13 by Green500.org. The lis…
