MIT Smarter Electric Vehicles Systems For Smart Cities

Smart electric vehicles are a big project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Electric vehicles could be delivered when drivers need the cars, rather than have cars sitting parking lots waiting for a driver. These new technology transportation systems incorporate new batteries, new electric motors, GPS, computers, and search technologies to deliver a new driving experience. In this video, Ryan Chin, Research Specialist at MIT Media Lab, describes the next technology stage for electric cars where smart transportation systems are used to provide a vehicle on demand.

IBM, GM Collaborate on Technology for Chevrolet Volt Electric Car

The announcement of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt highlights the recent work between General Motors and IBM, showcasing the Rational products used to develop the software system on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. GM is one of the first U.S.-based automobile manufacturers to produce a next-generation "plug-in, range-extended electric vehicle." It is directly propelled by an electric motor, for up to 40 miles, with a gasoline engine that will drive the vehicle up to an additional 300 miles. The Chevy Volt features 10,000 lines of code, and each car has its own IP address. IBM’s software and simulation tools helped GM engineers develop the software in the advanced control systems on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, which was designed and engineered in just 29 months, a record for GM, a company spokesman said. GM engineers used IBM products to develop some of the Volt’s critical electronic controls for the vehicle’s innovative battery system, electric drive unit and cabin electronics. The Volt’s unique propulsion system required the design of an unprecedented "system of systems," centered on software that seamlessly integrates the Volt’s 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack with its highly sophisticated electric drive system. IBM Rational software tools were used to help GM engineers model the interactions of the Volt’s embedded systems, helping to increase the quality and efficiency in developing this systems approach. – …

Electric dreams

Nissan’s been proudly showing off its new electric vehicle in Europe this week and appropriately decided to centre the event around the Museum of Electricity in Lisbon.

A former coal-fired power station – the transition analogy was not lost – the Museum houses an extraordinary collection of old power options right next to the Portuguese capital’s iconic monument to its famous discoverers.

And power is something the Leaf most definitely doesn’t stint on. It delivers a surprising torque value according to Nissan equivalent to a 2.5L V6 petrol engine, although when switching to the ‘Eco’ mode for motorways, pulling is clearly not as great.

Noise – or obviously the lack of it – has taxed the Nissan boffins who – in consultation with various blind associations for example – have come up with an engine-mounted system that the manufacturer says produces a sound similar to that of an aircraft taxiing. After 30km/h, tyre noise is deemed sufficient.

Such lack of cabin noise necessitated attention also had to be paid to quietening the wiper motor by 3db, while the headlamps deflect wind over the Leaf’s wing mirrors.

A dashboard gizmo constantly updates the range available – 160km autonomy is sufficient for most journeys – but driving up to 140km/h certainly sees the distance left rapidly diminish. However, an indicator also tells the driver where the nearest recharging point is – just for reassurance’s sake.

The Leaf certainly created quite a stir around Lisbon’s streets this week. The ‘Zero Emissions’ badging caused a fair amount of head turning, while one driver gesticulated at the car “electric?”

My Portuguese isn’t exactly fluent and after his several sentences – delivered at extraordinary pace – I just gave him a thumbs-up, which elicited the rather odd reply in Lisbon of “au revoir.”

And the Japanese couldn’t resist adding yet a further touch of technology. Should you be at dinner having parked your Leaf at a recharging point, a signal can be directed into your restaurant to a Smart Phone that will alert the driver when the car battery is fully replenished.

Oh, and according to Nissan, several Leaf cars together will be ‘Leafs’ and not ‘Leaves.’

Electric cars: A sparky new motor

The first mass-market electric cars are arriving in showrooms. They represent a big gamble for carmakers

THE star of this week’s Paris Motor Show was a Jaguar supercar. The C-X75 can accelerate to 100kph (62mph) in just 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 330kph. It is powered by batteries that are recharged by miniature diesel-sipping jet turbines. Although it is a mere experimental vehicle, the excited response shows that carmakers have come to see electric vehicles as part of their future. How large a part will depend on how drivers react to the rather less racy electric offerings from big producers such as General Motors (GM), Mitsubishi, Nissan and Renault.

The first mass-market electric cars are now arriving in showrooms in America, Europe and Japan (see table). They come in three flavours. Pure electric vehicles like Nissan’s Leaf can be driven for 150km or so before they need to be recharged for six to eight hours. Range-extenders like GM’s Volt (the Ampera in Europe) are powered by an electric motor that can be recharged either from the mains or by an on-board internal-combustion engine. Then there are familiar hybrids like the Toyota Prius, now being adapted to take a charging cord and with a longer electric-only range. …

Electric Saab

I can’t help thinking that Saab is slightly missing the point in showing an electric version of its 9-3 in Paris. Yes, there is life after GM and Saab is anxious to prove that it can be a player, but Saab might be better to wait until it can show an electric Saab on a smaller platform.

If Saab’s engineer’s have managed to eke out a 124 mile range on a full charge on a 9-3, then well done them, but that number would be bigger on a smaller and lighter vehicle – maybe one that could be fully engineered from the start to accommodate electric propulsion. A Saab 9-3 estate is firmly in the territory of household main vehicle and that range is still tight for vehicles in that category – unless Saab has done its homework and reckons there are still enough who would buy. I am just a bit doubtful that the market is there in sufficient quantity for the ‘all-electric family estate’ that has a range of around 124 miles.

A smaller electric car, perhaps as part of a new style-conscious family of compact Saabs (part of ‘Project 92′ maybe…) aimed at well heeled urban buyers might be better. And, in addition, the electric variants could find buyers as second cars for those who already have a bigger Saab blessed with more traditional Saab values.

Saab has just announced that CO2 emissions of just 119g/km and combined fuel consumption of 4.5l/100 km have been achieved by Saab engineers in adopting two-stage turbocharging across the 9-3 diesel range. The efficiency gains that manufacturers are making with the internal combustion engine continue to impress. It’s horses for courses and the ICE is eminently suitable for some products and customers, with fully electric propulsion equally suitable for others. All vehicle manufacturers need to develop an understanding of future markets and where their new product strategy fits it. Easy to say, I know.

In any case, good to see Saab alive and kicking and at a show with new things. Maybe that’s the point for Saab right now.

Manufacturing electric cars: The lighter drive

Electric cars made from carbon fibre will be safer and go farther

MARK WEBBER has a lot to thank tiny strands of carbon for. When his Formula 1 car cartwheeled in a spectacular 306kph (190mph) crash at the recent Valencia Grand Prix, what helped him to escape unscathed was the immensely strong carbon-fibre “tub” that racing drivers now sit in. Carbon fibre is an expensive alternative to making things in steel or aluminium, but besides being extremely strong it is also very light. It is found in high-performance parts, like aircraft wings, bits of supercars and the frames of pricey mountain bikes. But if work by Germany’s BMW proves successful, it could also become the material of choice to mass-produce electric cars.

The Bavarian carmaker plans to launch a new plug-in electric car in 2013. It will be one of the first designed from scratch to use an electric motor rather than being converted from an existing model. Reducing the weight of this four-seater car, known as the Megacity concept, will be crucial to improving its performance and range. So BMW is planning to use no steel at all. The Megacity will be built as two modules: an aluminium chassis will contain the electric drive-system and battery, and a body made almost entirely of carbon fibre will be fitted onto it. …

Pure electric vehicles – case for the prosecution

I have found myself involved in a number of conversations this week on market prospects for electric vehicles. I met up with New York based John Voelcker – who specialises on electric drive coverage for just-auto – and we got to talking over a few pints of stout about things like the energy density of oil versus battery packs, diverse car ownership and usage patterns across the world and so on. It’s a very big and multi-layered subject with a lot of dimensions on both the demand- and supply-side.

I guess I’m in the agnostic camp. I think I can just about envisage a scenario in which electric vehicles become attractive and develop a significant market presence, but I can also see how a lot of variables have to combine to make that happen. And I also think there is a fair bit of hyperbole and misperception about EVs around. We’re not all going to be ‘going electric’ tomorrow.

Even if we do, there’s the small matter of how the juice out of the socket has been generated.

And there’s also the political mix. Fiscally challenged governments may well – when push comes to shove – rate healthcare or education needs a little bit above subsidies for EVs that mainly benefit well-heeled ‘early adopters’ (the broader economic case is obviously there to be made, but it’s not an easy sell when other more politically sensitive departmental budgets are being scrutinised). That said, the next few years are certainly going to be very interesting.

I also got chatting this week to journalist Neil Winton who has neatly set out the sceptics’ case in an article on his Detroit News column.

Electric cars: Hub of the matter

Putting electric motors into the wheels of cars is the way forward

THERE are many innovations turning up in the latest experimental and production electric cars, affecting everything from batteries to motors to control systems. The need to make them all work together is prompting a complete rethink about the way cars should be designed and manufactured, and it is unclear which technologies will dominate as the constraints imposed by internal combustion engines give way to the new limits and possibilities associated with electric propulsion. But one group of engineers have stuck their necks out and declared that a particular technology, the electric hub motor, is likely to become the most widely used drive system.

A hub motor, as its name suggests, is built into the hub of a wheel and drives it directly, rather than having a single motor driving the wheels via a mechanical transmission. It is an idea pioneered by Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of the carmaker of the same name, more than 100 years ago. Mr Porsche got his first job in the automotive business with Jacob Lohner in Vienna, and put electric motors into the hubs of the wheels of the Lohner-Porsche, a vehicle which made its debut at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. It was a hybrid car that relied on both batteries and a generator to produce electricity for its motors. Capable of more than 56kph (35mph), it also set a number of speed records. …

Microsoft, Ford Will Apply Hohm Software to Electric Cars

Microsoft and Ford announce a partnership ahead of the New York International Auto Show that will see upcoming Ford electric vehicles integrated with Microsoft’s Hohm software, which monitors utility consumption in homes and makes recommendations on what users can do to save energy. Electric cars have the potential to become the most energy-intensive item in drivers’ homes and to exert great pressure on the electrical grid. In order to make the process more efficient, Microsoft and Ford intend to use Hohm to provide information to customers and utilities on the steps they can take to make electric cars less of a resource drain.
