The 2011 Festival will also host the largest celebration of Haitian culture in the U.S. since the devastating earthquake

honored to host the icons of Haitian music and culture including Wyclef Jean, Tabou Combo, RAM, Boukman
Eksperyans, Emeline Michel, Djakout #1, DJA-Rara and Ti-Coca & Wanga Negès. The many cultural connections will
be illustrated throughout all aspects of this year’s Festival. Some highlights include traditional Vodou drumming
performances, folk crafts demonstrations led by visiting master artisans and rara band DJA-Rara parading
throughout the Fair Grounds. With the support of the Green Family Foundation, the program will also include a
series of scholar-led panel discussions entitled Haiti & New Orleans: Cultural Crossroads as well as a listening station
featuring excerpts from the Grammy nominated recordings of Dr. Alan Lomax made in Haiti for the Library of
Congress in 1936-1937.

A surge in litigation, against BP and others, is cheering a few

EVERY oil spill has a silver lining—if you are a lawyer, that is. More than 70 related lawsuits were filed in the two weeks after oil started leaking into the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th, most of them class actions that claim damages on behalf of many similar victims. Trial lawyers are dreaming of one of the biggest paydays since they feasted on tobacco litigation. Even more certain are the bumper fees for law firms defending BP, Halliburton and other firms involved. The most notable winner is Kirkland & Ellis, which will represent the British oil giant.

No one doubts that the BP lawsuits will dwarf those that followed the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska in 1989, not least because the Gulf spill will affect a far larger, more economically significant area. The earlier disaster ultimately cost Exxon Mobil about $4 billion in clean-up and legal payments, much less than had seemed likely at first because a Supreme Court decision in 2008 allowed punitive damages to be slashed from $2.5 billion to $507.5m. …

JOHN ELLIS AND DOUBLE WIDE TOUR IN SUPPORT OF NEW RELEASE, PUPPET MISCHIEF

John Ellis

Brooklyn saxophonist John Ellis is gearing up for a busy 2010. On February 23, ObliqSound will release Puppet Mischief, the second album with his New Orleans-based band Double Wide, which in addition to Ellis features Brian Coogan on organ, Matt Perrine on sousaphone and Jason Marsalis on drums, plus special guests Gregoire Maret on harmonica and Alan Ferber on trombone.

The recording continues the former New Orleanian’s love affair with the Big Easy, drawing inspiration from the rich vein of music the city has given the world, while also taking cues, in Ellis’ own words, from “carnivals, state fairs, children laughing, clowns and dancing.”

The highlights of Puppet Mischief begin from its very first funky moments. The lead off track, “Okra & Tomatoes,” takes its title from a phrase that represents life’s perfect pairings. That’s followed by “Fauxfessor,” a tightly synced, off-kilter New Orleans romp full of surprising twists. The elegiac “Dewey Dah” displays each instrument’s individual colorings, particularly Perrine’s sousaphone, and reaffirms Ellis’ penchant for compositions that are never static, always morphing.

Among the album’s other standouts are the wild, teasing title track, featuring a stunning harmonica solo by Maret, and the back-to-back “Carousel” and “Dubinland Carnival.” The former, which Ellis calls a “wistful circus tune,” takes on a bluesy patina and incorporates several dramatic transitions, while its companion piece, which Ellis likens to the feel of a Fellini film, features an epic sax-trombone conversation and some of Marsalis’ most fired-up drumming of the set. “Chorale” speaks for itself – written originally with a string quartet in mind, it instead became a beautiful showcase for the four horns. “Heroes de Acción” is Ellis’ idea of soundtrack music for a Spanish cartoon crime-fighting hero while the album’s closing track, “This Too Shall Pass,” is the perfect sendoff; a calming, almost whimsical paean to the acceptance of flux as the one constant in life.

The release of Puppet Mischief follows up one of the busiest years in Ellis’ career, one that saw him accompanying a diverse array of musicians ranging from Sting to Mos Def to the Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa, touring Europe with the John Patitucci Trio and, most significantly, the debut of The Ice Siren, Ellis’ hour-long through-composed narrative composition for string quartet, tuba, percussion, guitar, vibes, winds and two singers. The piece, a collaborative effort with playwright Andy Bragen, debuted at New York City’s Jazz Gallery in May 2009.

Editors: U.S. Album Release

NEW ALBUM OUT STATESIDE JANUARY 19, 2010 WITH BONUS MATERIAL

Editors

“On their own terms, not anyone else’s, Editors have triumphed, aiming high and hitting the mark.” – The Sunday Times

In This Light And On This Evening, which debuted at #1 in the UK charts last week, is Editors‘s follow-up to 2007′s platinum selling An End Has A Start, and was produced by Grammy Award winner Mark “Flood” Ellis (U2, Sigur Ros, Depeche Mode). The album finds Editors heading in a new direction where synths replace the soaring guitars and lead singer Tom Smith takes his vocals to new places on an album with a dystopian, apocalyptic, mechanical ambience.

However, some things remain vintage Editors. The record is as bleak and as vivid as ever. “A record that sings of no God, a record of broken love songs, a record where the filthy city is so close you can smell it, taste it, a record of drunken violence, a record which has lost all trust in those in charge of our world,” describes Smith.

But those who focus on the gloom-and-doom in itself, he says, are missing the point. “Dark is interesting, dark is exciting, dark can be funny, there’s real life in the dark, real life IS dark,” says Smith. “When an album feels like this, the fragments of hope and love that do occasionally shine through, shine through ten times brighter than they would normally do so.”

To celebrate this week’s UK release of their third studio album, Editors have created a unique listening experience for their new album by appearing to ‘hack’ Google Street View. The experience allows fans to use a version of Google Maps on the Editors website to travel to certain areas of London where the band have hacked in their own custom locations. The new additions consist of some gloriously moody 360-degree images, shot at night. Within each location the user will hear a track from the new album, which was inspired by the mood and magic of London at night. The images feature the band and a group of their fans performing surreal activities, which reportedly have hidden meanings relating to the songs. The locations are normally unavailable on the regular Street View. Editors modified version of Google Maps allows users to enter into these locations and make the transition from light to dark so fans can explore the band’s atmospheric vision of London at night.

To access the Map go here.
