HBO’s breakout Prohibition hit has inspired a new look for Atlantic City’s oldest seaside gambling resort. Resorts Atlantic City, the nation’s first casino to open outside Nevada, will adopt a roaring 1920s theme to capitalize on the success of Boardwalk Empire, the Martin Scorsese-produced HBO series about the Jersey Shore in the Prohibition-era. The 12-episode [...]

Food Empire swings back to black with 1H profit of $9.4m
Food Empire Holdings, the manufacturer of instant beverage products, frozen convenience food and snacks, says it achieved a turnaround in the first half of 2010 with a profit after tax of US$6.9 million ($9.4 million), compared to a loss of US$2.2 million loss for the same period last year.
The strong results came on the back of a surge in sales, particularly in the group’s largest market of Russia. The group’s revenue for the first half of this year was US$81.9 million, an increase of 47.0% compared to the same period in 2009.
Club Méditerranée: An empire built on sand
Can the world’s best-known holiday resort continue in its current form?
CLUB MED was celebrated in its early days as a socialist paradise where thanks to its villages’ all-inclusive formula, money had no value. Holidaymakers are “all multimillionaires”, exclaimed Paris Match in 1965. Judging by its results, Club Med still has an anti-capitalist philosophy. It has lost about €250m ($310m) on revenues of €13 billion in the past eight years and its share price has fallen from over €120 in 2000 to €14 now. But there is no shortage of interest in the company.
Last year Club Med was the target of Bernard Tapie, a Marseilles businessman, who bought a chunk of shares and pushed for change before selling out last December. In June Fosun Group, a Chinese conglomerate, took a 7% stake. Most recently there have been reports that BMB Group, the sultan of Brunei’s investment company, wants to invest, though it has denied having direct talks with the firm. …

The evolving blogosphere: An empire gives way
Blogs are growing a lot more slowly. But specialists still thrive
ONLINE archaeology can yield surprising results. When John Kelly of Morningside Analytics, a market-research firm, recently pored over data from websites in Indonesia he discovered a “vast field of dead blogs”. Numbering several thousand, they had not been updated since May 2009. Like hastily abandoned cities, they mark the arrival of the Indonesian version of Facebook, the online social network.
Such swathes of digital desert are still rare in the blogosphere. And they should certainly not be taken as evidence that it has started to die. But signs are multiplying that the rate of growth of blogs has slowed in many parts of the world. In some countries growth has even stalled. …

Eni defies its critics: Another Roman empire
Italy’s energy giant grows when some want it to shrink
ENI, a state-controlled oil-and-gas group established in 1953 to help Italy escape dependence on foreign firms, is growing. On November 23rd it announced the purchase of a share in several Ugandan oilfields from Heritage Oil, a small exploration firm. In October it announced the discovery of a big offshore gasfield in Venezuela and the award of a licence to develop a giant oilfield in Iraq. It is already developing one of the world’s biggest recent discoveries, Kashagan, beneath the Caspian Sea. By 2012 Eni expects to produce the equivalent of more than 2.1m barrels a day (b/d) of oil, up from 1.8m b/d last year.
There are signs of strain. The development of Kashagan has suffered from cost overruns, delays and a change in terms forced upon it by the government of Kazakhstan. Eni’s debts amount to over 40% of its equity, a higher level than most of its peers. It cut its dividend earlier this year. Profits were down by 59% in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period last year, to €4 billion ($6 billion), on sales that were down only 27% to €61 billion. Lower energy prices and falling demand have naturally hit Eni’s profits from production, refining, marketing and petrochemicals. …

GRATEFUL DEAD TO BE HONORED OCTOBER 19 IN NEW YORK CITY WITH SPECIAL LIGHTING
OF EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN TIE-DYE COLORS
BOB WEIR AND PHIL LESH IN MANHATTAN FOR NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY FUNDRAISER OCTOBER 21
The Grateful Dead |
The Grateful Dead will be honored in New York City today (Monday, October 19) when the Empire State Building is lit up with special tie-dye colors celebrating the group’s appearance in the city later that week. The color scheme will represent the group’s iconic imagery and psychedelic influences.
On Wednesday, October 21, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will attend a fundraiser at the New York Historical Society as part of an exhibit celebrating the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society traces the career and achievements of a band that became one of the significant cultural forces in 20th century America. Through a wealth of original artwork and documents including concert and recording posters, album art, large-scale marionettes and other stage props, banners and decorated fan mail, the exhibition will explore the musical creativity and influence of the Grateful Dead from 1965 to 1995, the sociological phenomenon of the Dead Heads and the enduring impact of the Dead’s pioneering approach to the music business. Materials in the exhibition will be drawn almost exclusively from the extraordinary holdings of the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California Santa Cruz, established in 2008.

Robert Plant awarded CBE
The former Led Zep frontman has been made a Commander of the British Empire. In your face Jimmy Page OBE!
Robert Plant was honoured as a CBE by Prince Charles in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday, letting the former Led Zeppelin singer finally one-up guitarist Jimmy Page.
While Page is a member of the Order of the British Empire, Plant now outranks him with his new title of Commander of the British Empire.
Plant didn’t seem to think this really mattered. “If we can remember each other’s phone number at this time in life it’s a miracle,” he said. “We’re still good friends, we both enjoy a rather dark sense of humour that comes, I think, from being on the wrong side of the tracks for all those wild years.”
Led Zeppelin have not played together since their one-off O2 Arena gig in December 2007. Though Page had tried to reunite the group for a tour with bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, the late John Bonham’s son, Plant declined to join them. Instead, he is concentrating on an ongoing collaboration with American singer Alison Krauss.
Asked if a Led Zeppelin reunion may still be on the horizon, Plant pretended to be hard of hearing. “Sometimes I go a bit deaf in either ear, especially when people are talking nonsense,” he said.
