India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni feels that the introduction of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) in the cricket World Cup won’t make all teams happy. The debatable UDRS will make its debut in the World Cup from the quarterfinal stages and Dhoni said the Indian team has done its homework on the system. “We [...]

Vauxhall gets ball rolling with England
Off to GM’s Volt plant this morning with a tour of the Hamtramck facility near Detroit, although a fairly hefty snow dump is forecast.
I say hefty, but Detroit television stations are predicting up to 5″ – enough to paralyse the UK for days – but a fall here that is just met with a shrug of the shoulders.
Opel CEO Nick Reilly hosted a dinner last night in in downtown Detroit – enlivened by a vast American train hooting its way just feet from the event – and was on good form. He mentioned when the restructuring took place last year, he toured several European plants to explain the decision – in a 20min speech in German. Not bad for a Brit.
And Reilly’s UK partner Vauxhall also announced this morning it was to sponsor the England football team.
Brave move. We English crashed out of last year’s World Cup beano in South Africa – to the Germans – don’t remind me – and spectacularly garnered only one measly vote apart from our own representative at the recent ‘event’ to decide the 2018 tournament.
Vauxhall will take over from former sponsors Nationwide, who it’s fair to say, did a pretty good job and the fit with the car biz seems pretty apt too.
Cars and football – it’s not too difficult to see what sort of audience Vauxhall could be aiming at in its 3.5 year deal that industry speculation hints could see a sponsorship figure of around GBP100m pouring into the FA coffers.
There’s a chance Vauxhall might be talking to just-auto in Detroit about the deal from the UK later, so fingers crossed.
You wouldn’t really know that anything was happening in the UK from American TV, apart from one event. The networks are going nuts about the forthcoming Royal wedding and are devoting acres of airtime to the nuptials, gossiping about who’s on – and off – the knees-up event in the evening.
Time for some sanity and to head to the Volt plant.

British Woman Gets Cast Of “Twilight†Tattooed On Back
Twiing Too Hard? We thought the whole Twihard phenomenon was slowing grinding to a halt — after all, we now have The Golden Voice of Ted Williams to marvel over — but as it turns out the obsession with sparkly vampires is still alive and kicking, especially among middle-aged women in the UK. Cathy Ward, [...]
Gloom be gone
It is Friday evening here. Ain’t early January a lovely time of the year? No, not really (raining and cold here in England, dark at 4:30pm), though there are plenty of ways to lift the old mood, of course. I have come across two video clips that cheered me up and that are kind of appropriate to banishing the post-holiday blues – besides watching endless Ashes cricket clips, good though that is (sorry Aussies, but we English don’t get much to cheer sports-wise, so we have to go a bit mad and you guys have been guilty of crowing a fair bit in the past, to be fair).
1. Okay, you’ve perhaps been a bit reckless with your credit card in December and you’ll be paying for it this month. But when it comes to money and getting value for your hard-earned, well, it really is a very subjective area and whatever you have done, rest assured that some people are being very reckless with their wonga. In fact, you are quite possibly a paragon of fiscal responsibility and prudence by comparison with some out there…
How much would you pay for a vehicle registration plate that reads ’9 0′ ? Well, nothing as far as I’m concerned. Maybe a tenner if you have just celebrated your ninetieth birthday and can still drive? Or your name has been changed by deed poll to 90 perhaps? Am I missing something here…
Anyway, some people evidently thought that plate was worth rather a lot. Did it deliver pleasure to the buyer in proportion to the price? Who knows, but check out this astonishing auction clip. Kind of puts your own spending patterns and the odd reckless purchase in perspective. Good to know that the DVLA is working hard on closing the UK budget deficit. Maybe ask around the office what such a plate would be worth and take bets before you play the clip (be aware though, looks like an odd discrepancy on the price at the end, or maybe that was after the VAT was added…). World gone mad? Look pal, that was a long time ago.
2. And as I said, the weather here in UK can be a bit grim at at this time of the year. So, why not remind yourself of glorious summer days at sunny Goodwood in lovely Sussex. Love the sound of that Ferrari engine and it felt so good to go around the course and give it some wellie for once…’Got me lunch on’…
England humble Australia in Ashes cricket series
Only a monsoon or a doughty Australian fight-back Friday could prevent the English cricket team giving Australia a 3-1 hiding in the Ashes series in the fifth and final Test in Sydney. The former looked a more likely prospect than the latter, with the home side still 151 runs short of making England bat again [...]
Pamela Anderson left shaken by stalker
“Baywatch” beauty Pamela Anderson was left terrified after a crazy stalker confronted her on a train. Anderson was followed along a platform by the young man at Liverpool Lime Street station, England, after a stint in the city taking part in a pantomime – a traditional British Christmas theatre show. The unidentified male followed the [...]
Charlotte Casiraghi: Riding High
Troy is a stallion; Tintero is a gelding,†says the slight young woman with the startlingly recognizable face. Troy is wearing fabulous headgear, and Tintero, her sweet-faced gray, has huge eyes that look like they were made up with a kohl pencil. “He is my best horse, my number one—he’s so clever,†says Charlotte Casiraghi, [...]
Ankle injury puts Harris out of action for three months
Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris will be out of action for at least three months due to an ankle injury. Harris suffered the injury during the fourth Test, in which England thrashed Australia by an innings and 157 runs Wednesday to retain the Ashes on away tour after 24 years. Harris will undergo a surgery [...]
Women with wide waists face higher cancer risk
Almost half of women have a higher risk of cancer because of their bulging waistlines. Most people think men carry more weight around their tummy, but the reality is that women are way out in front. Forty-four percent of women in England have a large waistline linked to a range of cancers and other diseases, [...]
Ponting slams policy of showing replays on big screen
Australian captain Ricky Ponting criticised the policy of showing replays on the big screen before a decision is made, and admitted that the Hot-Spot heat-camera vision had prompted his anger towards umpires Aleem Dar and Tony Hill on the second day of the fourth Ashes Test. “I guess one flaw we’ve got in the system [...]
