eWEEK Newsbreak January 7th 2011

Join host Ashley Daley as she catches up with Eric Lundquist, live from the Consumer Electronics Show floor in Las Vegas. Eric lets us in on predictions for 2011 and the top new product releases for the year, such as the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Motorola Cliq 2, the Motorola Droid Bionic, and the Motorola Xoom tablet, which is based on the Android 3.0 version optimized for tablets. Curbing Database Sprawl

Database software (alone or as the back-end to critical business apps like ERP, CRM, SFA, etc.) is essential to many operational areas of all businesses. Due to mergers and acquisitions, as well as letting business units operate independently, many companies database deployments have evolved in a heterogeneous and inefficient manner, leading to database sprawl. A highly siloed environment and a patchwork approach to database deployment and management take their toll on the bottom line, increasing server sprawl and operational expenses. Join Deeper Thinking host Tyler Pyburn, as he sits down with Eric Lundquist, Vice President of content for Ziff Davis Enterprise and Sal Salamone, Executive Editor at Ziff Davis Enterprise as they discuss the factors that contribute to database sprawl, the negative impact of database sprawl, and what can be done to reduce the sprawl.

It will work by using near-field communication technology with short-range, high-frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The tri-network venture has a customer-base of over 200 million and expects to launch in “key geographic markets” in the next 18 months; Facebook has announced a new unified messaging system that provides users with e-mail. Users will also have the ability to communicate with one another on the Web and on mobile phones regardless of whether they are using e-mail, text messaging, or online chat services. The new service encourages users to sign up for an e-mail address ending in @facebook.com, but of course will not be mandatory; With 2011 right around the corner, what do you all believe will be the key business trends of 2011? Lundquist’s Five Simple Steps to Creating a Dynamic Mobile Enterprise

eWEEKs Eric Lundquist is at 2010 CTIA show in Las Vegas. Its the 25th anniversary of the show, which has turned, in his words, from an it’s like wired but slower, more complicated and more expensive event to a showcase for the future of consumer and business digital communications and data flow. The business aspect of wireless has lagged the consumer in Lundquists opinion. The carriers are partly responsible in that they pursued the consumer revenues. The business execs are also partly responsible in that they never envisioned an era when 75, 80 or maybe a 100 percent of their workers and customers would operate solely in the mobile environment. Not surprisingly, Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT T Mobility and Consumer Markets, stated in his keynote that by 2013, 75 percent of workers will be mobile workers. With that in mind, Lundquist looks at how IT managers can take five simple steps to turn their enterprises into dynamic mobile workplaces.
