French Kosovo policy in WikiLeaks cables

Several leaked U.S. diplomatic cables that have been published by WikiLeaks to date mention Kosovo in the context of the ethnic Albanian UDI. The cables originate from the U.S. embassy in Paris, and were sent in the first half of 2007, and the first half of 2008.

Local Albanian coalition collapses

The municipal government in the southern town of PreÅ¡evo, made up of three ethnic Albanian parties, has collapsed. Democratic Union of the Valley leader Skender Destani said his party had decided to leave the coalition with Ragmi Mustafa’s Democratic Party of Albanians and Orhan Redzepi’s the National Movement of Albanians.

Minister downplays greater Albania talk

Serbia’s minister for local administration says statements coming from ethnic Albanian municipal officials from PreÅ¡evo and Bujanovac are not worrying. Milan Marković told B92 late on Tuesday that “anyone can say what they like, so much attention should not be paid to it. Such statements came before as well, but they did not garner so much attention.”

Self-Determination opposes talks

Supporters of the ethnic Albanian radical movement Self-Determination wrote “No to negotiations, self-determination” on the Kosovo government building. The movement is campaigning against the announced dialogue between PriÅ¡tina and Belgrade.

Serb returnees “determined to stay”

After being at the receiving end of ethnic Albanian protest and stone-throwing, Serb returnees in the village of Žač in Kosovo have last week been fired upon.
There were no casualties in the shooting and the police said they were searching for the attackers. Although concerned for their safety, the returnees say they are not thinking about leaving their village.

K. Albanian arrested on Serbian warrant

An ethnic Albanian accused of committing war crimes in Kosovo was arrested at the Munich Airport yesterday. The suspect is accused of being a member of the Anton Lekaj group. Lekaj was previously found guilty and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Kurti trial postponed again

The trial of Albin Kurit has been postponed for May 4, after he once again failed to show up in court for his hearing. The leader of the radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination Movement was not present in the Priština Director Court on Wednesday, despite the warrant issued for his arrest last week by EULEX.

Kurti trial postponed again

The trail of radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination Movement leader Albini Kurti has been postponed for the eighth time. Kurti is accused of participating in a group that obstructed officials from performing their duties and is also accused of inciting violence during the February 2007 protests in which two people were killed and 80 were injured.

Police get warrant to arrest Kurti

Kosovo police, KPS, received a warrant from the District Court of Priština to arrest Albin Kurti unless he shows up in court on Friday. The trial against the 35-year-old leader of the radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination Movement was scheduled for Tuesday.

Belgian ambassador to visit south

Belgian Ambassador to Serbia Denise De Hauwere will on Tuesday travel to the south of Serbia, B92 has learned. “The ambassador will speak with presidents of the municipalities of Bujanovac and Preševo Shaip Kamberi and Ragmi Mustafa, their associates and leaders of (ethnic) Albanian parties,” Bujanovac Municipal President Cabinet chief Enis Salihu told B92.

Kurti trial postponed until April 13

The presiding judge of the PriÅ tina District Court ruled on Tuesday that the trial of Albin Kurti be postponed until April 13, EULEX said. Kurti is the leader of the radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination movement.

Å arić’s ties to Albanian crime boss explored

Belgrade daily Danas writes that Darko Å arić’s gang in Serbia has ties with the crime group of Antun Stanaj. Stanaj is an ethnic Albanian with Montenegrin citizenship.

Priština: Kurti trial postponed

A court chamber in PriÅ¡tina, made up of EULEX and local judges, has decided to postpone the trial of Albin Kurti for Feb. 22. Kurti is the leader of the radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination movement in Kosovo,accused of participation in a group that committed criminal offences, including “obstruction of official persons performing their duties and calls to resistance”.

PriÅ¡tina: Radical movement in “poster campaign”

Radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination Movement has started a campaign asking for “justice for two of its killed members”. According to reports, PriÅ¡tina is plastered with posters of Mon Balaj and Arben Dzeladini, who were killed in a clash with UNMIK police on February 10, 2007.

Ethnic Albanian officials upset over courts

Ethnic Albanian MP Riza Halimi said that the closing of courts in Preševo and Bujanovac endangers the rights of local Albanians. It relates to this community’s right to have courts in their language, he explained.

NUNS condemns hate speech in tabloid

The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) has condemned hate speech against an ethnic Albanian journalist. Fahri Musliu was the subject of an article entitled, “Murder of Serb is holy thing for Albanian”, published in the Tabloid newspaper.

Finnish police: Shukpoli “killed systematically”

An ethnic Albanian from Kosovo who on Dec. 31 killed five people in the Finnish town of Espoo executed his victims “systematically”, say police. “We do not know whether the killer knew his victims before the crime. That is a subject of the investigation and that is why right now we cannot say why he fire,” said police detective Esa Groenlund, who heads the team investigating the killings.

Montenegro: No open issues with Kosovo

Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Roćen stated that his country “does not have any open border issues with its neighbors”. Roćen was answering MP questions in parliament in Podgorica on Tuesday when he said that he had learned from the media about the ethnic Albanian protests near the town of Peć, in the western part of Kosovo.

Albanian NGOs on “territory exchange”

Exchange of territory in the region would be to the detriment of Albanians, a gathering in Skopje, Macedonia, heard. The event brought together 20 ethnic Albanian NGOs from across the region.

Minister reacts to ethnic Albanian declaration

Chairman of the Coordination Body for Southern Serbia Milan Marković says a recent ethnic Albanian declaration “will not solve any problems”. The body deals with issues in the southern municipalities of PreÅ¡evo, Bujanovac and MedveÄ‘a, where Serbia’s largest population of ethnic Albanians outside of Kosovo itself lives.
