Ethnic Albanian councilors in Serbia’s south have launched an initiative to form Albanian regional institutions and a separate region of PreÅ¡evo Valley. A political declaration, adopted in an assembly of councilors of PreÅ¡evo, MedveÄ‘a and Bujanovac, reminds that this initiative comes “in the spirit of the political platform of January 2006″.

Albanians want “PreÅ¡evo Valley region”
An assembly of ethnic Albanian officials, made up of councilors from Preševo, Bujanovac and Medveđa, want the Preševo Valley to become its own region. The local assembly has adopted a political declaration in which it rejects all violence which could lead to destabilization in the Preševo Valley in southern Serbia.
Suspected killer of two Serbs in custody
An EULEX judge has remanded an ethnic Albanian in prison for one month, on suspicion that he killed two Serbs in Kosovo in 1999. Mahmut Uksini, 31, has been accused of killing his victims in the Orahovac municipality.
MUP nab people trafficking suspect
The Serbian police (MUP) officers arrested Fatmir Arifi of KonÄulj, in southern Serbia, as they broke up a people smuggling ring. The ethnic Albanian is suspected of belonging to a group that smuggled Albanian citizens to EU countries.
“No repression, south under control”
Serbian police (MUP) Directorate Chief Milorad Veljović says that the state controls the situation in the south of Serbia. Speaking for Belgrade daily Politika, Veljović rejected accusations from ethnic Albanian president of the Bujanovac municipality, Saip Kamberi, who accused the police of “conducting repression in the south”.
Ethnic Albanian leaders react to attack
Ethnic Albanian party leaders in the south of the country on Tuesday condemned an incident when a bomb exploded in Preševo. Two people were hurt overnight in that town in the region close to the administrative line with Kosovo.
“Blast in south classic act of terrorism”
Interior Minister Ivica DaÄić says that the explosion in PreÅ¡evo where a woman and an ethnic Albanian child were injured was “a classic act of terrorism.“ One person has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling arms from Kosovo.
Serbia to request ex-KLA’s extradition
Justice Minister Snežana Malović says a request for extradition of Muharem Gasi will be forwarded to the Italian judiciary in the coming days. Gasi is a former member of the ethnic Albanian so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and is indicted for war crimes committed in the province in 1999.
