Former bus manufacturer director arrested

Former Director of Ikarbus Srećko N. and three others were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion that they defrauded the company of EUR 1.2mn. The suspects are believed to have made illegal gains through the sale of 166 buses, from 2003 until late 2008, transferring EUR 1.2mn to three other companies, and incurring damages in the same amount to the bus manufacturer.

Foreign currency savings EUR 5.9bn

At the end of November the foreign currency savings reached record levels of around EUR 5.8bn. The figure further rose to EUR 5.9 billion through December 21, surpassing the previous highest level registered in September 2008, said the National Bank of Serbia (NBS).

EU approves EUR 50mn for Serbian budget

The EU has decided to approve EUR 50mn as direct support to the Serbian budget, the EU Delegation to Serbia announced. Serbia will receive anotherEUR 50mn next year, and a loan worth EUR 200mn to be used toward the country’s macro-economical stability, a statement from said today in Belgrade.

Public debt reaches EUR 9.67bn

Serbia’s public debt at the end of November reached EUR 9.67bn, which represents 30.7 percent of the GDP, the Ministry of Finance said. The public debt was EUR 884mn higher than at the end of last year, when it totaled EUR 8.78bn, the ministry announced on its website.

“Serbia could get EUR 250mn from IPA”

Once Serbia becomes a candidate for European Union membership, it will receive EUR 250mn from the European IPA funds. Economic analyst Goran Nikolić said that Serbia is currently using two installments from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds worth EUR 200mn, and that once it becomes a candidate for membership, it will be able to use five, which will be worth a total of EUR 450mn annually.

Fiat to pay EUR 100mn “by end of year”

President Boris Tadić says Italian carmaker Fiat will by the end of this year make the EUR 100mn payment in the Zastava deal. Tadić was on a trip to Turin, Italy on Sunday, and said that an annex to the contract between Fiat and the state of Serbia, concerning the Kragujevac-based Zastava car manufacturer, will be signed on Wednesday.

Total public debt reaches EUR 9.5bn

Serbia’s total public debt is at around EUR 9.5bn, Jurij Bajec, Adviser to the Serbian Prime Minister, told Tanjug. The 2009 figure alone was EUR 1bn on the domestic market via sale of treasury bonds, and around EUR 800mn on the foreign market, he explained.

“Govt. to propose EUR 1.1bn deficit in 2010”

Daily Politika writes that the government will propose a budget deficit of EUR 1.1bn for 2010 to the IMF. The state has calculated that it will be able to raise some EUR 6.8bn in income next year, with spending at EUR 7.9bn, the daily has learned from sources within the Finance Ministry.

Average wage in Croatia: EUR 725

The average net wage in Croatia in July was EUR 725, according to the national statistics bureau. This represents a 1.15 percent fall on the June figure of EUR 733.6.

EU in EUR 100mn boost for Serbian budget

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Deputy PM Božidar Đelić have signed a financial agreement in Brussels giving Serbia’s budget EUR 100mn in IPA funds. “I’m sure that it will be seen as an boon to continue legislative and economic reform in the country,“ said Rehn.

Current payment deficit lower

Serbia’s deficit of the current balance of payments was EUR 979mn, 68 percent lower than in the same period of 2008, the Economic Institute said. Serbia’s exports in July 2009 totaled EUR 538mn, 25.8 percent less than in the same month of 2008, and its imports were worth EUR 943mn, 47 percent down on last year.

EBRD funds Corridor 10 with new loan

The EBRD’s Board of Directors has approved a EUR 150 million sovereign loan to Serbia. The money will go to financing the construction of a new highway section – E-80 – along the strategic Corridor 10, a statement from the bank said on Friday.

EC: EUR 100mn in support to budget

The European Commission (EC) has granted EUR 100mn to Serbia’s budget, it was announced. This came in order to help the country’s economic recovery and reduce the consequences of the global economic crisis.

New problems in Å trpce

Štrpce residents are waiting to pay their EUR 26 installments to the Kosovo Electric Corporation, but KEK officials have failed to appear in the village. Štrpce Municipal President Zvonko Mihajlović said that they had received a call from the American embassy in Priština around noon, calling for local officials to give the KEK team approval to come to the village and accept the money for the electricity, but to hand over control over the power station in Štrpce to locals.

NIS to see EUR 500mn for modernization

Some EUR 500mn will be invested in the modernization of NIS over the next three years, it has been announced. EUR 60mn of this sum will be set aside for an environmental program at the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) company, majority owned by Russia’s Gazprom.
