Serbian currency weakens against euro

The Serbian dinar (RSD) weakened against the euro on Monday by 39 paras. This set the official middle exchange rate at RSD 104.6051 for one euro, announced the National Bank of Serbia (NBS).

Sarkozy in “euro rallying call”

A minor blast claimed by left-wing activists came early in the day of Nicolas Sarkozy’s euro rallying call in Davos, Switzerland, reports euronews. The group against the gathering of global elites on a website said communism must overturn the dictatorship of capital.

Singaore’s Swiss-Asia plans 500m euro China power plant fund

Singapore’s Swiss-Asia Financial Services plans to raise 500 million euros ($861.6 million) for a private equity fund that will invest in combined heat and power plants in China, riding on the country’s efforts to promote clean energy.

The China District Energy Fund, which has gathered US$115 million ($147.3 million) in commitments, will invest in electricity plants that also generate and sell heat to end-users, providing a second source of revenue.

The Twilight Singers

The Twilight Singers will
embark on their first European tour in five years beginning March 18 in London at the Electric Ballroom. Tickets for
most shows go on sale on this week. Dates are still being added and more will be announced in the coming
weeks.

The band will celebrate the launch of their forthcoming album Dynamite Steps (Out in the US on
February 15 and worldwide on February 14) by performing two special shows at Amoeba Music in Los Angeles (Feb
15) and the San Francisco Amoeba Music store (Feb 17) the week of release. These will be the first ever in store
performances for the group.

The following week, The Twilight Singers will return to Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 23rd to perform their
latest single “On The Corner” The song is currently available as a free download at the Sub Pop Records website here.

Calls for enlargement of euro rescue fund

The European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso on Wednesday called on member states to move quickly to increase the size of the EU’s euro crisis fund.
This follows increased concerns that further eurozone countries will require a bail out, Deutesche Welle reports.

Currency to make slight recovery

The Serbian dinar will on Monday, January 10, strengthen against the euro by 11 paras, or by 0.1 percent. The official middle exchange rate after the holidays will be RSD 106.3839 per euro, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) said on Thursday.

Serbian currency continues slide

The Serbian dinar weakened against the euro by 47 paras on Wednesday, the central bank has announced. The official middle exchange rate today is RSD 106.485 for one euro.

C. bank announces exchange rate

The Serbian dinar will lose 51 paras in value against the euro in the first few days of 2011. The official middle exchange rate will be RSD 106.0156 for one euro as of January 4, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) stated.

Estonia prepares to adopt euro

A currency changing cow is helping to mark Estonia’s historic New Year entry into the euro zone.

Installed in the capital Tallinn, the robotic beast allows people to change their money at an advantageous exchange rate.

Euro zone gets intl. rescue fund

EU has agreed to set up a permanent rescue fund to help euro zone members struggling with sovereign debts.
EU treaties will now be revised to allow the fund to be set up in 2013.

STI off 0.6%; Euro zone debt concerns weigh

The STI is down 0.6% at 3156.88, weakening further in afternoon trade as euro-zone debt concerns resurface, hurting risk appetite.

There are 2 fallers for every gainer in broad market.

While Singapore’s market has been weak in recent sessions, most analysts expect activity and prices to pick up again after the holiday period.

Merkel: Euro will survive crisis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed confidence euro will survive debt crisis, and that no member of the eurozone risks having to restructure its debt.

She spoke Thursday in Berlin, seeking to reassure financial markets as the euro was near a two-month low against the dollar.

SGX Euro STOXX 50 futures to debut on Dec 6

Singapore Exchange (SGX) today announced that the SGX Euro STOXX 50 Index futures and options on futures will start trading on its derivatives market on 6 December.

The debut of the US-dollar denominated Euro STOXX 50 futures and options will mark the first time these products are available in Asia.

Janice Kan, Senior Vice-President, Derivatives, at SGX says, “The launch of the SGX Euro STOXX 50 futures and options will allow investors to respond earlier to developments occurring outside of European trading hours but affecting European equity markets. The addition of these contracts will bring a more international flavour to our suite of equity index derivatives, thereby strengthening our position as the listing, trading and clearing venue of choice in Asia.”

Alstom wins 580m euro in Asian orders, shares up

French engineering group Alstom (ALSO.PA) said on Thursday it won two Singapore power generation orders worth around 580 million euros ($1.05 billion), boosting its share price amid concerns it is losing its competitive edge.

The two contracts will involve Alstom building and maintaining two gas-fired combined cycle power plants for Keppel Corp and Tuas Power Generation, a unit of Huaneng Power.

AS IRELAND’S government bails out its banks yet again and wrestles with a budget deficit a third as big as its GDP, prompting a downgrade by Fitch, a credit-rating agency, on October 6th, many Irish businesses are struggling. Failure rates have exceeded 2009 levels for all but two months so far this year. Curiously, though, the financial crisis has made some firms more competitive than they were at the height of the boom.

The costs of running a business in Ireland have dropped steeply. Office rents have fallen by 50% and labour costs are 10% lower than in early 2008. The euro has weakened against most global currencies, favouring exports out of the euro zone. …
