GIC buys European rescue debt, May support further bond sales
Government of Singapore Investment Corp., a sovereign wealth fund with US$100 billion ($128.4 billion) of reserves, bought some of the European debt issued to finance Ireland’s bailout, Deputy Chairman Tony Tan said.
“We believe the bond is relatively safe given how it’s structured and it gives us reasonable yield,” Tan said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. GIC will consider buying more European rescue debt in future sales, he said.

MEPs approve ratification of Serbia’s SAA
Members of the European Parliament today in Strasbourg voted in favor of approving the ratification of the SAA signed between Serbia and the EU.
The voting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed for technical reasons.

A COUPLE of decades ago two tyremakers, Pirelli of Italy and Continental of Germany, were locked in a takeover battle. A merger would have brought them close to the size of the world’s big three tyre firms: Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. It didn’t happen. Continental fought off Pirelli and they went their separate ways. Both have had a bumpy ride.

Bulgaria, Romania won’t join Schengen
France and Germany have decided to block Bulgaria and Romania from joining Europe’s passport-free 25-nation Schengen travel area next year, RFE/RL reports. A European Commission spokesman, Michele Cercone, said today that French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux and his German counterpart, Thomas de Maiziere, told the European Commission in a letter that it was “premature” to let them enter Schengen in March 2011.
