Gilad Shalit’s imprisonment compared with other long-held hostages
FOUR years after he was taken hostage, the family of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier being held by Hamas in Gaza, are showing their frustration by staging a sit-in outside the house of Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu. Mr Shalit’s sojourn with his captors has been lengthy but past hostages in the Middle East (and in Colombia) have been held for even longer. As an Israeli solider, Mr Shalit is seen somewhat differently to many long-term hostages. His captors point to the thousands of Palestinians being held in Israeli jails in their defence. Israel has come close to securing his release on a number of occasions as part of a prisoner exchange but thus far without success.

A click leads to an e-mail address for reporting sexual or physical abuse by priests. The first person to use it spoke anonymously to the newspaper Corriere della Sera. As a wartime evacuee, he recalled how a village curate “felt my trousers, tried to kiss me and asked me to caress him”. His younger brother told him the priest was still molesting boys 13 years later.
The web initiative has recently been praised as an exercise in openness and may be extended to other parts of Italy. Impartiality is still the best policy, a giant humanitarian network says
AS EVERY student of warfare knows, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is staunchly, and at times controversially, neutral. Its work as a guardian of the laws governing conflict has obliged it to deal with all manner of bad people, including the Nazis.
Less well known, probably, is the neutral tradition of the other wing of the Red Cross movement, which is much larger: the network of humanitarian volunteers in 186 countries which offers medical aid and practical help to victims of disaster, both natural and man-made. But the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), whose leaders met in Nairobi last month, is adamant that impartiality has served it well, and worked to the advantage of the people it succours. …
